http://www.enworld.org/showpost.php?p=3707358&postcount=22

About half way down the report you will find this.
"Living Greyhawk – will be coming to a triumphant close next year, and they will be starting fresh with a new batch of characters and players. This will be discussed tonight or tomorrow."

So, it's not really going to end, it's going to restart with first level PCs.
We're not getting rid of the old computer, we're just rebooting it ...

They might be right with that "new batch of players" bit.

And while I am joking, it is hardly ending. Rather, we have a firm commitment that it will go on. You know a reboot is the best thing for a rules change this big anyway. I want to know about reward cards though - are all of them worthless after this point, or will some live to fight another day?

Ah, checked the headers before posting, rather than new content on old threads, and didn't see anything about it.

Should people probably let the news be fully released, and let it sink in for a few days, before posting in here?
Probably.
Is that gonna stop people from jumping off tall buildings?
No.

So, how many people are excited about restarting LG? How many people are disappointed?

I'm both, at this point. My great fear is that much of the established community of LG players exits the campaign. That SOME of them will leave seems a given. But, if that exodus becomes a flood, it will lessen the LG experience greatly.

I'm excited, myself. I'm just too impatient. I'd rather it be happening in January, myself!

Re/Formating it would be a better analogy.:)

Disappointment

4th edition is going to be like playing laggy World of Warcraft. But you know whatever keeps the shareholders happy. After LG dies I'll stop playing D&D all together. No need to spend another grand on books.

Mixed bag. I'll never hit retirement with my rogue wizard, I'll just end up starting over with him.

Same goes for my sorcerer, who was a little more effective than the rogue wizard.

I'll be shelving most of my level 1s. And I won't bother making a Kobold now.

i agree with above for people care about their characters like a fine wine and with all the time they put into them to see them taken away is like losing your puppy.

Not to worry my friend! As long as the campaign exists in some form, there will still be home play at our place, where the rum, like the laughter, flows free. Heck, Jenni and I are always happy to see you and your lovely missus, even if we're not together for the purposes of pretending to be great heroes, saving the land (yet again).

As for me, I'm in the camp of "nervously curious" regarding the new rules and the possibility of campaign changes.

You don't HAVE to play 4E online, you know.

Well, it's the time investment in playing the character. Nevix, my rogue/wizard has died 4 times, survived many more, slain drow, duergar, orcs, kobolds and a host of other creatures.

He was a female elf after getting reincarnated the first time. Then a Female Halfling. Then he came back as his original Suel Male self.

He's been enslaved repeatedly and has the scars to prove it. He's had tattoos of his former lives etched into his skin because he wanted everyone to know what had happened to him. He is STILL playing host to a certain spirit from the Bright Lands in a tattoo on his face.

Every AR has something I could quote as funny or memorable or hated or just plain stupid.

But, even though I'm going to lose all of that, I'll still have all of that. I'm not going to burn my character sheets and ARs, I'm going to keep them an look over them with nostalgia for Nevix' first adventures, and deaths, and triumphs.

And then I'm gonna pull out the 4E books and make a new Nevix, and go hunting for new adventures. Nevix will live, even if he dies.

Sincerely,
Hariman

PS: Nevix is a character who was so luckless, more than one player said "He made it to 6th level?" when I said "He died after hitting 6th level."

Although it is possible that they were just razzing me about Nevix.

All campaigns eventually come to an end, I for one am looking forward to gaming in the Realms, as for lag on 4E online, hey I played EQ on dial up so anything has to be better than that. I enjoyed LG but its gone and as for pleasing shareholders, well thats what a company does, no real surprise. I have been with D+D since 1st edition and won't be deserting because a campaign has ended. Yes I have spent a lot of money on it but I've also spent a lot of money on variuos incarnations of Shadowrun, Battletech etc. I can't really think of any games system that has stayed the same and remained succesful.

See you in Waterdeep.

Definite disappointment. I'd joked that when 4th ed comes around to LG, I'll drop out 'coz of the money investment in books. Looks like that will be enforced =( Not cool.

What can I say- I love LG and am heartbroken. What will happen to my beloved Perrenland. God i feel sorry for all the triad members who put so much effort into my region. I appreciate it guys. Thanks for all the good stories and excellent adventures.

There should be a huge adventure bank on the net somewhere ,when LG dies, with all the adventures from all the regions- free to download. That way if you wanted to keep running your characters you could. That would be years and years of adventures.

its possible all the living campaigns will go on and compleatly ignore 4th

LG sits down at a bar table with 3.5, and 4.0

LG- "well whos this here another motly member of our band?"
4.0- "i am not a motly adventurer i am a new set of rules and will perposefully bog down play with additional rules and a new set or rules, i am also created to add additional dollars to WIZOs pocket books"
3.5- " well thats great ROLL A SPOT CHECK"
4.0- " ok so then I simply fail it cus i dont use spot checks"
3.5- "ok"
4.0- *goes to drink beer, downs it, dies*
3.5- "thats how you handle change...:D "
LG- " you know your really creepy, but at least you get the job done"

You'd best not be doing that with any adventure of mine. They're my intellectual property pal, and I write them for Living Greyhawk campaign use - not so some dodgy people could steal them after it finishes.

Generally gaming companies have minimal loyalty to existing gamers. The marketing men always have their eyes on the future. The one exception to this seems to be battlefront.

There also seems to be an assumption that if you already have a significant investment you will keep updating but that is not true. I have probably $5000 or more worth of games workshop 40K books and miniatures that have only been used once in the 3 years since the new edition (a tournament where in one game destroyed a 1500 point marine army for the loss of a 40 point squad so my armies remained viable). In the end "changing things to make people buy more stuff" just got too annoying.

The saddest thing is new LG gaming groups and gamesdays in smaller centres will likely just dissappear. But do not expect WoTC to actually care, as a corporation the bottom line is selling product.

Wow, I'm incredibly disappointed by that. Not much of a fan of FR, but I guess to game I'll have to suck it up...and try to find that old FR crap of mine that I was going to throw out...

Well, EVERYONE is welcome to the scenarios I have written. I wrote it for people to ENJOY. If they're still enjoyed AFTER the campaign and live on for years..wow, I'd consider that a true honor.

Cauldron of Ale
Mean & Devious
Operation Ixworth
Deserted Dominion

ENJOY! Go ahead.

All I know is that I now am going to ignore all the rules of LG and just play what mods I want, and give myself unlimited TUs, as I am going to enjoy this great setting whilst I still can.

Who cares if they say nothing costs TUs? Its not like they can get rid of our characters! WE ARE GOING TO LOSE THEM ANYWAY.

I feel Gary Cygax should have signed over royalties to LG, just for his loyal fans, rather than force the corporate entity to push us onto a silly ill conceived realm. WHilst I don't know his financial situation, but I personally would have done it, rather than see the world I created ending.

I essentially now don't care about DnD for the rest of the year. I *may* look into 4th edition, but its essentially killed it for me. I don't see how it could have been so hard to reconcile the older gamers with the new video gamers, but apparently not.

Someone must have let a person with a marketing degree in. (Sometimes its too much to hope that these guys are gamers too)

I feel the same way. I won't get back to civilization til the end of 2008, and all of LG will be gone by then (ok, I'll have a month to go to Nyrond and Geoff). My WotC purchasing trends have been halted for the time being though. I was going to start an LG group here, but not anymore.

Luckily, I have a Saga. That looks like it will be fun.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I recall a lot of gnashing of teeth and threats of leaving when another certain Living Campaign got the axe five years or so ago.

Some folks had been playing characters there for the better part of a decade. Lot of time and love invested there.

You know what? Fast forward a few years, and most of the folks I know that threatened to walk out are still here, many playing LG now. Enjoying themselves, even if they do find the opportunity to complain about this or that.

I don't see things going that much differently this time around. A few will go, most will stay, and overall folks will keep gaming.

ok, I have a couple of questions?

1. is LG being "rebooted" with a newly converted format for 4E?

2. Is Living Realms (LF) a new campaign setting that is also going to be supported or is it REPLACING Living Greyhawk?

If LF is replacing LG I'm going to be ******. It took me forever just to get the Greyhawk setting accepted by all of the Forgotten Realms fanboys at our local gaming store that make up a decent populace of the players. I've been talking up Greyhawk and everything. Even if Greyhawk continues, I've watched my players put all their work into their characters for so long. So very very long. They've all just reached level 3. I'd just built LG at my store. LG was the house that I built. Now its going to be replaced by the setting that comes with its own piles of source books and bullsh1t. Well, I'll play your LF but I won't run it. I won't even buy your books. Not worth it for that price. I'm not going to quit dnd, I know that. But to me..... You're no better than Wizkids.

LG is being replaced by LFR. LG was the 3.0/3.5 campaign. LFR will be the new 4.0 campaign.
