Upgrades can only be given to magic items under the relevant language of the LGCS. That language, under "Upgrading Magic Items" on page 16, is: "Any PC may upgrade the abilities of some magic items, by hiring an NPC . . ., if they own the lesser item and have access to purchase the greater item. If the difference between two magic items is merely an improvement in the basic abilities of the item, it is considered an upgrade." In other words, the rule is that an item must be magical to begin with for it to be upgraded to a better magical item. There is no provision for upgrading a masterwork item to a magical item. Based on one of Britt's answers back in the original LGCS Year 7 draft discussion, I think this was originally an oversight that remains . . . uh . . . overseen. I do not think it was the Circle's intention to remove the ability to upgrade masterwork items. Nevertheless, if that is the case, I recommend that it be changed the next time the LGCS comes out and perhaps address in a future Dispel Confusion. If it was intended that we no longer be able to add a magical upgrade to masterwork weapons and armor, please let me know as I've been allowing them while under the impression that this slipped through the cracks. Thank you. That is all. :) |

There's never been any question that I can buy a +1 longsword. I really wouldn't have any recourse beyond "this is what the Circle intended" if a DM pointed out that there's no provision for upgrading a masterwork weapon, claimed that the rules required me to pay full price--including masterwork costs and weapon costs--for a magical weapon, and denied me the privilege of upgrading my masterwork weapon to a magical weapon. But we're on the same page in terms of ultimate result and I don't know that there are any DMs out there who are actually denying players the privilege of upgrading their masterwork weapons, so won't belabor the point beyond this. Thanks for your time. |
