I'm going to my first Living Greyhawk game tomarrow at the Weathertop convention in Vancouver, BC, and I'm up tonight making my character, an elf Warrior. I just wanted to check to see if I was using the right document to create my character (The Living Greyhawk Campaign Sourcebook Version 3.0, April 2004). Also, it says that I must choose a subrace for my Elf, it talks about Grey, High, and Wood elves. It gives referenced to Wood and Grey Elves but no High Elves. Am I to assume that High Elves are the typical Elves from the Players Handbook? Thanks a bunch guys.

The version of the LGCS that you should be using is the LGCS 4.1 released last month. You can see/download a copy here: http://www.furyondy.com/documents/LGCS4.1.pdf
And yes, High Elves are the Elves from the PHB.

Thanks a bunch. I had my first LG game this weekend and I'd like to say it could've been worse, but my Human Cleric (Yah, thanks for the response but I decided to go with a Human Cleric) got a fireball straight to the chest and died instantly (I was in an APL 6 game). But I still had a good time and I look forward to playing in any future adventures.

You should never play that far above your APL.

Check out what region you are in and see if there's a convention running introductory modules. Those are your best bet. :)

Ouch. Yeah, definately look at Intro mods (since they give you a sense of the region's flavor as well) or APL 2's. I'm not sure about where you live, but here in Furyondy, people at cons will be more than willing to truck out a low-level character to help out a new player.

Aw...it can be done...with grossly min/maxed chars (and perhaps a good buffer in the party)...

I played in an APL 6 with a min/maxed half-orc barbarian because we only had four players and needed to slot zero the module...He did just fine on his own...In the last combat, when he was raging, enlarged, bull strengthed, hasted, and greater invisibled...Let's just say he did better than fine on his own... :D

Umm..."on his own"? Since when can a 1st level barbarian get bull strength, haste and greater invisibility on his own! ;) You might have been doing fine, but it wasn't on your own.

My highest level character right now is a 4th level Half-Orc Barbarian type (he's got a level of fighter & ranger thrown into the mix), and he got his start playing at a convention where he played an APL 4 adventure the first time out of the gate. He survived, but barely. Got dropped down into the negatives twice (once by an invisible stalker and once by a fireball) but there were two clerics in the party to keep him from kicking the bucket. I am glad I chose to take the barbarian level first for max hitpoints instead of the ranger level for the skill points.

After that experience I do strongly recommend that you never play up so far that you get 1/2 xp & gold. The reward is just not worth the risk!

Ahh but you see it's a bit different for those of us without a region. When you're limited to core modules, you only have a few APL 2's. Once those are done (including those from the previous year) you've nowhere to go but up.

Our group has been through a lot of changes recently and our current party is a 2/2 Ftr/Bbn half-orc, a 2/2 ftr/rog elf and 3 1st level chars who joined recently. They are now stuck with us doing APL 4's. We're managing to survive although the two level 4 chars are ending in negatives at least twice an adventure. Thank goodness for wand of cure light wounds!!!

At the WF members meeting SRM said that one of the new Bright Dessert mods from Origins will be APL 2 only so that's good for new players without regions.

Hey Steel Rabbit,

You need to come down to Seattle/Redmond for a SeattleMob Gameday (2nd Saturday of each month). I'll be starting a new character this weekend, and will not play above APL4, but would rather be at a APL2 table.

I did mention a good buffer in the party...And when I said "on my own" I meant as the primary melee guy...up in the front, on my own, no one to hide behind sort of thing...

Hey Gamegeezer! I didn't know you played LG! Awesome, man! Yah I'll come down the next time I get a day off from work on a second saturday (hmm...This may be harder than I thought :) ). But I'll DEFINATELY be at Dragonflight for some LG. Which reminds me, are you up for playing some UWZ there too?

Anyways, I plan to attend some Vancouver Gaming Guild events and hopefully squeeze in a newb character there. It's funny, the kid that hangs out at the GW I work at went to the convention with me, and not only is his character now higher than mine (easy to be higher than dead) but he's attending other events too! I got one addicted, I did!
