| juanblan10-09-05, 01:56 PM | Hello everybody, I'm a french player who conduct a campaign in the Shield Land region. Infortunately, i'm not a RPGA member, but i wanted to play some Living greyhawk scenarios :The shield lands regional scenarios (All year), the iuz's metaregional scenarios and some of the core scenarios. It's for private use, for me and my group of four players only. Where could i find this scenarios ? The shield lands triad has not answered me yet. If someone has this stuff... Please help me. Thanks Juan |
| JohnduBois10-09-05, 02:23 PM | Living Greyhawk adventures, to my knowledge, are only available for play in the campaign. The easy way? Take the Herald-Level GM test (it's not terribly difficult, and you can use books for reference). It will get you an RPGA number and six RPGA membership cards for other players. Then, you can order the adventures online for home games and get them from the Triad legitimately. This also gives you the option to play the characters from the home campaign at a convention, if your players eventually want to do that. |
| juanblan10-09-05, 03:36 PM | Yes, but i'm french and the region for france is Ekbir. Can i be a french rpga member and order shield lands regional scenarios and play them in private sessions ? Juan |

Juan No you may not order modules from a region other than the one you reside in, Core modules are what that is for. Living Greyhawk modules of all type however are only availiable for use in the Living Greyhawk campaign, they are not supposed to be used for a "home" type campaign. |
| kenobi6510-09-05, 07:33 PM | Living Greyhawk modules of all type however are only availiable for use in the Living Greyhawk campaign, they are not supposed to be used for a "home" type campaign. Just to clarify...you *can* run Living Greyhawk adventures for your home game group. However, you have to run them "as-is"...you can't order them, then adapt them at all. However, as others have pointed out, the regional system of Living Greyhawk means that you can only run: - Core adventures - Adventures from your region and metaregion Since Shield Lands is equated to the U.S. states of Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota, only RPGA Herald-level GMs who live in those states may order and run Shield Lands modules. If you happened to travel to those states, you could *play* in Shield Lands modules, regardless of where you actually live, but there's no way for you to run them if you don't live there. |
| juanblan10-14-05, 03:56 PM | Ok, i understand but is it possible to have acces to the retired scenarios ? This scenarios will not be played again, so why don't let them run in home sessions ? Some of them are quite good, and i wonder why the circle won't diffuse them. Personnaly, Shield lands year 2 and 3, and Iuz year 2 and 3 will be very helpful for my campaign. I'm 37 years old and i have not the time to write a entire campaign against the Old one. Juan |
| kenobi6510-14-05, 04:17 PM | Ok, i understand but is it possible to have acces to the retired scenarios ? This scenarios will not be played again, so why don't let them run in home sessions ? Unfortunately, it's not possible. The contract that RPGA authors sign only gives the RPGA distribution rights for the modules for "official RPGA play." Once the module retires, RPGA has no more distribution rights. For the RPGA to redistribute retired modules would require renegotiating contracts with the author of each module they wanted to redistribute, something that the RPGA hasn't shown any interest in doing. And, it's also against RPGA rules for someone who has a copy of an RPGA module (retired or not) to redistribute it. My understanding is that the newer RPGA contracts allow the rights to the modules to revert back to the authors upon retirement of the modules, and the authors then have the right to republish the module if they so desire. However, if the authors wish to republish, they'd need to take out all of the intellectual property that belongs to WotC (mostly proper names, but also any rules items that are from non-Open Game Content WotC-published sources). |

And with a single post... - despite alot of hard work by alot of people, much of it quite good - despite alot of whining by alot of those same people about how their work must be taken seriously (and how it isn't) by many of the people who are actually publishing work (for example, in Dragon) and generating "public canon" ... kenobi65 eloquently explains why Living Greyhawk can never be "canon". The campaign events (i.e. modules) that is generating that "canon", and the reasons for generating background (to set up modules) is completely inexcessible to the general public, and is even inexcessible to LG players/DMs that join in the fun too late, or simply live in a different region. The RPGA should find a way to make these adventures public domain after a period of time. Of course, with the current official WotC policies towards Greyhawk, that is not gonna happen. If a tree falls in the forest, and everyone is blinded and deafened, it effects nothing... unless you're lucky enough to be under the tree at the time. Of course, with the current official WotC policies towards Greyhawk, that is not gonna happen. Or, at a bare minimum, figure out a way to "publish" what the key events in the campaign have been. Unfortunately, with those events scattered over dozens of regions, and in the hands of dozens of different Triads, each of which can "do their own thing", to a certain extent, any kind of concerted effort to bring that information together would seem to be very difficult to pull off. |
| King Kashue10-17-05, 05:14 PM | <<<The RPGA should find a way to make these adventures public domain after a period of time. Of course, with the current official WotC policies towards Greyhawk, that is not gonna happen.>>> What, the current policy of supporting the largest living Campaign in the world and providing around 250 free modules per year? Facilitating a campaign that spans 3 Continents (Since I think SA is no longer in the Splintered Suns) and 19 countries? Yeah, they're really screwing over Greyhawk with their policies...the bastards  I'm obviously being somewhat sarcastic here, but it really annoys me when people ***** about how the RPGA or WotC is somehow "out to get" gamers and does stuff to intentionally screw them over...The RPGA and WotC provide a huge amount of FREE gaming...The Circle and the Triads are not out to screw you over, they're out to provide a completely free gaming experience with their VOLUNTEERED time and efforts...And way too many people do nothing but ***** about how crappy the free entertainment is... PS, the word is Inaccessible...an excess is a surplus, access is availability... |
| Maldin10-17-05, 06:08 PM | providing around 250 free modules per year? I'm sorry, but didn't we just establish the fact that even if I were an RPGA member with "official DM status"... the only mods I could possibly have access to is the half dozen or so local triad mods and a few core mods? Where are these 250 free mods? I'd personally like to see them. Really! I'm sure there probably is at least one or two gems among the coal. Its spelled cashew, and its a nut too. ;-) Ok, just kidding, but there are better things to do then spellcheck discussion boards, possibly the best place on the planet to find great examples of bad spelling and grammar, because people don't bother spending time editing their posts. When I say "current Greyhawk policy", I'm not a whining fan, but speaking as an insider... my knowledge of their policies comes from direct communication with editors and brand managers and its been quoted to me. Actually, it's a seed, not a nut ;) And my name is translitterated from Japanese, so technically it's neither... And I usually don't correct spelling, but I was actually confused by your word since it is so far away from what you were saying... As for modules, there are around 20 cores per year, 8 regionals and 8 metaregionals...36 rounds of play without having to leave your house (and you'd even have to make more than 1 character to play them all because you'd max out 1)...Except for those poor souls down in Oz, most everyone is within a 2-4 hour journey from at least one other region where there are at least 8 other regionals, and perhaps 8 more meta-regionals (if it's a different metaregion)...A player living in Detroit for instance is within 4 hours or less of Veluna, Verbobonc, Keoland, Ket, and (if you're willing to speed) the Yeomanry...That's an additional 5 regions and 2 metaregions (48 more rounds)...That's enough to max out at least 2 characters TUs... And you say "even if I was" a RPGA member, meaning you aren't...So (and correct me if I'm wrong) you're daming a system with which you have no experience? Perhaps you should avoid deciding the nature of a thing until you have at least a modicum of experience with it... |
| kenobi6510-17-05, 09:49 PM | KK, It doesn't sound like Maldin is disputing any of what you said. The issue is this: RPGA player or not, unless you're actually playing the modules in a region, you have no real way of knowing what's transpired in that region since the publishing of the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer in 2000 (effectively, the beginning of CY591, IIRC). That's five years, and counting, of campaign events that are inaccessible to most of the world. For example, the original poster is very interested in what's happening in the Shield Lands. But, since he lives in France, he's got no good way to get any information on the key events in the past 5 years of Shield Lands modules (much less access to the actual modules). Even though the Triads, the Circle, and all the writers have undoubtedly put tremendous work into developing and advancing the campaign, much of that information isn't available to those outside a particular region. If someone's publishing summaries of "key events" that have transpired in the regions (at a minimum, what's happened in retired modules), I haven't seen it. |
| Maldin10-17-05, 10:18 PM | Kenobi65 knows what I'm speaking of. Perhaps you should avoid deciding the nature of a thing until you have at least a modicum of experience with it... You mean you don't recognize my name? I'm hurt! ;-) I used to be an RPGA member back when you had to pay for it. To be honest, I have no idea if my name made it through to the current membership list. I think they hit the ol' reset button on membership, though. As for experience with LG, I think there are alot of people lurking (and some not-so-lurking) on this list, as well as many of the Circle, that can attest to my contributions to LG... beginning way back before anybody else outside of WotC had even heard of the idea of LG, and continuing up to the present. And I believe my alter-ego is even in the newest issue of Dragon (although I personally haven't seen the issue yet, I have seen the text). Your number's probably still in the system; I had a friend who had let his RPGA membership lapse for over a decade, and they still had his number in the system. |

That's five years, and counting, of campaign events that are inaccessible to most of the world. Some regions actually have summaries of what has happened in each year via dispatches or other online sources. The Shield Lands has dispatches plus a file with its recent history (years 519 - 593) and another file with events prior to 591. Because mods are in play for two years, you may not be able to find out what is currently happening since it would give away the plot lines of current mods. The dispatches by themselves tend not to be very good explanations of events as they are often IC and leave out many details. |
