| Lordik05-14-04, 11:39 PM | Im honesty trying to find short description what it is but I cannot. The rules of RPGA and in Living Greyhawk pdf is to complex for one who didnt know anything about Living campaing. Can you describe me in short terms what is Living campaing is? |
| Greyson05-15-04, 01:12 AM | Hey, Lordik. A Living Campaign, especially Living Greyhawk, (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=lg/welcome) is an enormous network of regional role playing events set in the World of Greyhawk. Players and Dungeon Masters get together at Living Greyhawk Events and play in adventures specifically written for the worldwide campaign. As a member of the Living Greyhawk community - as a Player or DM - you can possibly help shape the face of the Flanaess. I actually went to my first Living Greyhawk event last January to poach players for my home campaign. I had no intention of getting involved in the RPGA. But, Living Greyhawk is so dynamic and compelling, the network ended up bringing me into its fold. Now I am immersed in the campaign. So, try it out. Find your Region (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=lg/regions) and get involved in its next event (http://events.wizards.com/rpgaweb/external/calendar.asp). It is a lot of fun. |
| Lordik05-15-04, 04:42 PM | There are isnt my region there. Actually Im from Russia. You know people do not like Gryhawk much there. Recently Im introduce my party to Greyhawk in module Vecna Lives (converted afcourse). Now im trying to expand. Is it possible to play at home and “shape the face of Flaness”? :) |
| Simpi05-16-04, 05:48 AM | Originally posted by Lordik There are isnt my region there. Is it possible to play at home and “shape the face of Flaness”? :) Certainly. So called 'Core scenarios' can be played anywhere in the world and 20 are published each year so currently you have something like 28 available cause they are released throughout the year. In case of Russia, there are two close regions. Nearest European region is Ahlissa/Naerie which includes Denmark, Finland, Norway & Sweden. In far east, nearest one is Duchy of Urnst (Alaska and other states). Naerie has just become more active this year, we have a webpage and three regional modules in the pipeline and I could run games for tourists in Helsinki:D While Circle has said that no new regions will be assigned, it is possible for a country to be included in existing region if core play numbers are high enough. So if you can find people to run games in Russia, who knows what will happen in the future. |
| Lordik05-16-04, 06:24 PM | Ok Another few questions Did I need to send results to RPGA by normal mail or it can be sended via internet? And what about home rules? I mean not creation of characters afcourse All DM have different system to give xp for example. Some gives xp for encounters. Others for roleplaying Im by my self have a complex system of xp combination the both. And what benefits (Id set aside great number of modules) Living Campaing have? How it different from running normal modules? (I mean In my case) |

XP: All LG modules have maximum experience that they can give out, for example APL2 (average party levels) module can give out maximum 450ex. This rule cannot be changed. Benefits: You get player/DM reward points for playing and then you get things called campaign cards which might give you some benefits. |

(I mean In my case) As Simpi points out, Living Greyhawk adventures (as with any RPGA Living adventure) have specific guidelines for awarding XP, based on what the characters accomplish. Some modules do allow for a portion of the XP award to be discretionary, for good roleplaying, etc. The other big benefit to playing a Living campaign is that you can take your character and play it at a convention anywhere in the world (at least, anywhere that they're running an adventure for your campaign). If you're only going to be playing at home, with the same group of players every time, then that's not a big benefit for you, obviously. |
| Lordik05-17-04, 07:57 PM | Thanks again 1. Is it way for my players to recieve RPGA numbers? Or they must all made it throught Herald-DM test? 2. And can you describe me basic principes how "players shape the Flanaess''? I see thorought several old modules for Living Greyhawk and notice that there are no more that common adventures (in certain Greyhawk country and with some special rules). Or I wrong? 3. Certainly. So called 'Core scenarios' can be played anywhere in the world and 20 are published each year so currently you have something like 28 available cause they are released throughout the year. Why only 28? greyhawk Living campaing is only 1.3 years lenght? And what differes Core Scenarios from other? 4. And last question. Is recent War is Greyhawk was somehow managed by players? Thank again for reply :embarrass |
| kenobi6505-17-04, 10:25 PM | Originally posted by Lordik 1. Is it way for my players to recieve RPGA numbers? Or they must all made it throught Herald-DM test? They don't necessarily have to take the test. When you set up an RPGA event and order adventures, the RPGA will send you membership cards for your players to fill out and mail back in to RPGA HQ. Each card contains an RPGA membership number, ready to use. Of course, all of that (mailing you the cards, having them mail them back) is done via the postal service. Since you're in Russia, that will undoubtedly take some time (as they're mailed from the US). It might well be easier / quicker to have them take the test. 2. And can you describe me basic principes how "players shape the Flanaess''? I see thorought several old modules for Living Greyhawk and notice that there are no more that common adventures (in certain Greyhawk country and with some special rules). Or I wrong? By "shape the Flanaess", I think they're referring to the concept that the actions taken by the PCs playing LG across the world can shape the course of future modules. For example, if a bad guy survives a module (in the majority of games played) and can carry out his evil scheme, future modules may be different than if he failed. However, I have also read some skepticism as to how often this really happens. People who play LG more often than I do should probably answer that one. 3. Why only 28? greyhawk Living campaing is only 1.3 years lenght? And what differes Core Scenarios from other? The LG campaign is broken up into different "regions", with each region of the Flanaess corresponding to a real-world region. In the case of the U.S., each "region" is one or more states. Outside the U.S., a "region" might encompass one or more countries. For example, the U.S. states of Illinois and Indiana are Verbobonc; the UK and Ireland are Onnwal. Not every real-world area has a corresponding LG region; the LG staff only assigns regions to those real-world areas that have a sufficiently large player base. Unfortunately, at the current time, Russia is among those areas without an LG region. Core scenarios can be played by anyone, regardless of their region (or lack of it), as they take place in areas that aren't assigned to a real-world region, like the City of Greyhawk. They release 20 (or so) core scenarios per year. LG has been running for nearly 4 years, but scenarios do not have an unlimited lifespan -- usually, they're retired after a year-and-a-half or so (which is why someone said 28; that's probably roughly how many Core scenarios are available at any one time.) Regional scenarios are written by / for each region, and may only be run *in* that region. If you want to play in an Onnwal regional, for example, you'd need to attend a convention or other event in the UK or Ireland. Each region usually gets to release 8 regional scenarios per year. So, for you, the biggest difference between Core and non-Core scenarios is that you can play Cores in Russia, but not non-Cores. For a lot more information on all of this, you can go to www.living-greyhawk.com 4. And last question. Is recent War is Greyhawk was somehow managed by players? No, the Greyhawk Wars occurred in the years 582-584 CY, well before the start of the Living Greyhawk campaign (591 CY, if memory serves). Hope this helps. Mike |
| Simpi05-18-04, 12:18 AM | Originally posted by kenobi65 3. Why only 28? greyhawk Living campaing is only 1.3 years lenght? And what differes Core Scenarios from other? [/B] I will answer this. 20 Core scenarios are published each year and all year 3 scenarios (that can be played in 2003-2004 perioid) have been published so far. Year 4 scenarios (2004-2005) have not all been published yet to my knowledge. That's what I meant with 28 core scenarios, since not all Y4 modules have been released yet and Year 1/Year 2 scenarios have been removed from LG |
| Simpi05-18-04, 02:20 AM | Originally posted by Lordik 2. And can you describe me basic principes how "players shape the Flanaess''? I see thorought several old modules for Living Greyhawk and notice that there are no more that common adventures (in certain Greyhawk country and with some special rules). Or I wrong? It's a cynical marketing plot:D Seriously, I don't know much about cores but regional triads have the possibility to shape their own regions. For example, in UK there is an event 'Spring Weekend in Onnwal' every year. Last time it had three linked mini-missions & interactives which shaped upcoming events. The main plot line was with APL2-4 table who had to escort Ahlissan ambassador to capital of "Free Onnwal". Failure would have meant that capital would have been destroyed and that Ahlissan fleet would not have been there to help defenders. All these modules were unique, one shot events, which would never be played again and entered into the 'history' of the region. So players with regions can affect things if they have triad that is dedicated enough. I don't know about core modules.... |
| Lauralan05-20-04, 02:19 PM | Hi everyone, I'm brand spankin' new here... Instead of clogging the board with a new thread, I'll put my newbie question here: I am trying to register for the Los Angeles Living Greyhawk campaign next weekend, but I can't. I just started gaming very recently and a friend gave me a member registration card, which I mailed in on Monday. But I can't register online for the game until Wizards processes my member number, which could take a loooong time, and I'd really like to attend the convention starting on the 28th of this month. Can anyone help me find a "back door" into this convention? Someone who could help process my member registration and activate my member number? I would be eternally grateful. Any input would be welcome. Thanks so much everyone, Laura |

There's no guarantee, but hey, maybe... |
| Lauralan05-21-04, 12:59 PM | Thanks, i'll give that a shot. I appreciate your help! I'll let you know how it turns out... |
| Coreyartus05-24-04, 01:54 PM | Laura-- You're talking about Gamex, right? You might want to check out the LG regional website for the LA area: http://www.nyrond.org/turbine/page/ There are allso some Yahoogroups that are pertinent to LG games in LA: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/Nyrond-lw http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/SOCAL_RPG Since a LOT of the people on those lists will be attending Gamex, they might be able to give you some advice. I am sure this situation has come up before, and they might be able to provide the "backdoor" you're looking for. Hope that helps! Coreyartus |
| Lauralan05-24-04, 05:33 PM | To be honest, I'm not sure what the convention title is, but Gamex sounds right. I'll give those sites a try, once again, I really appreciate everyone's help. Take care, Laura |
| Lordik05-25-04, 05:31 PM | Sorry but I have another questions :) 1. I finally get Living Greyhawk Gazetteer and there are mention about 20$ fee for joining RPGA (pg 191). But when I passed DM test there are mention that RPGA is free. Where is trust? 2. Is there DMs that run RPGA games in internet? 3. When I get RPGA number is there all modules will be avaible for me or just Core and my region? |

At the time the LGG was written and published, the RPGA DID have annual membership fees. That changed. Now membership is free and eternal. So, both were correct at the time they were published, you just forgot to see which was current. <g> 2. Is there DMs that run RPGA games in internet? Yes. There are several Yahoo! Groups dedicated to online play of games, including RPGA material. Some groups use AOL Instant Messenger. Others use Open RPG. Each has advantages, and each has people who think the other is completely unsuitable for a series of reasons. 3. When I get RPGA number is there all modules will be avaible for me or just Core and my region? Well, ONLY standard Core modules from LG can be played online. If you have a face to face group, and reside within a region, you can also play regional and meta-regional modules. There are a LOT of other campaigns which can be played online, though. Some are associated with the RPGA, others are not. If you can put up with all the communication being typed, you can play online almost constatnly if you really try. Jeff Huston Spobody Necial |

| kenobi6505-25-04, 08:57 PM | Originally posted by Lordik Oh, I mean if I get RPGA number can I download for my use (not in RPGA program) all adventures or only Core? Actually, the answer is "none". As an RPGA member, you can order RPGA modules to run in RPGA events (even playing at home can be an RPGA event), but you can't just download modules "for personal use." All RPGA modules are expressly intended for use only in official RPGA play. |
| Lauralan05-26-04, 01:39 PM | For any of you out there who were spending sleepless nights wondering how my dillemma unfolded, here's the update: Thanks for all the helpful links, I managed to get in touch with my Triad member, and although he really doesn't seem to like me for some reason, at least I got some answers. It's too late to register online, but he assured me that I could just play the game as a walk-in. So, keep your fingers crossed that they aren't all filled up, and hopefully I'll get a chance to play my first LG game this Saturday. Anyway, thanks again to all those who helped out! |
