We have any Zelda fans in the house? We need to get WotC to make a deal with Nintendo to turn Hyrule into a campaign setting. We have to have Cucco animal companions. WotC, if you make this product I will love you forever. Give me a job and I'll drop every little thing I'm doing in my life and make it my life. Imagine how many people would play Living Hyrule!

So come on Wizards, get to talking with Nintendo.

Given that Nintendo and WotC parted ways on the Pokemon license a few years ago (I have no details on the specifics of that, or if there was any bad blood, but WotC used to produce the card game in the U.S, and now they don't), I'm not sure that it'd be particularly likely.

Actually, it was Nintendo who pulled out of that deal; the Pokemon card game had gotten really popular, but Nintendo wanted to have more of the profits and a sweeter deal, and they just took their license back and printed the next edition of the cards.

What probably makes the bad blood, of course, is that WotC then sued Nintendo for using their gameplay mechanics (which they somehow got a patent on, despite the fact that prior art on turning cards sideways and flipping them facedown goes back 100 years or more in all manner of card games)...

Ahh, but they could have patented a system that included the PA in a new use, or included new aspects that weren't used in any of the PA. If none of the PA used all those aspects in that exact way, and the conjunction of all the PA would not teach towards that combination for a POSITA, it would be patentable. (whether I agree that it /should/ be is another issue)

Zelda just seems way too narrow for a Living campaign. If Living Arcanis and Living Force both get the boot: Hyrule would be out on it's rear in six months.

Arcanis is actually growing like a weed (it's probably somewhere like 4K or 5K players, which, while not as big as LG or the D&D Campaigns, is still bigger than any other Living-style campaign since Living City died). The reason it got the boot from RPGA is that it's a third-party campaign, and RPGA decided it no longer wanted to spend money on supporting someone else's products.

Force died a natural death -- it was always intended as a 5-year campaign, and ran for those 5 years. It had a player base somewhere around 3K or so...still bigger than campaigns like Living Death or Living Kalamar. The reason that there's no LF2 at this point is that WotC didn't support the SWRPG for 2.5 years; the LF staff had started development of a new campaign, when WotC/RPGA pulled the plug on that in mid-2005. With the new Saga Edition coming out in March, who knows if RPGA will support a SW campaign again (Ian keeps saying "never say never").
