| Talonas Elendril10-29-05, 10:45 AM | One of my characters has recently became a Tattooed Monk and has added the Chrysanthemum tattoo (heals level in hit points every hour when in sunlight), how will this work in conjuction with the effects of the curse? If it works, does he heal at the rate given. If it requires a roll, what would be the DC and how is it worked out? Is this a loophole that will not work because it circumvents the major disadvantages of the curse. |
| JohnduBois10-29-05, 12:33 PM | The effects of the Crysanthemum tattoo are explicitly defined as magical healing, so a CL check is necessary to heal. As a DM, I would have the PC make the CL check defined in the curse's description, with the character's effective caster level equal to his/her class level in tattooed monk. This check would have to be made each hour the character is in direct sunlight. What to do when the adventure ends is a little fuzzier. I really don't know about that. |
| Talonas Elendril10-29-05, 12:53 PM | That seems sensible, now the question is how many hours of daylight in a day? Do I go the long route..ie work out the time of year based on TU's left and the latitude and longitude based on information given in the world of greyhawk boxed set and then arrive at a figure or is there an easier solution? I am assuming that this may have been asked before so do I do the calculations or can someone give me a figure? (any circle members out there). |

Does the mark interfere with a Paladin's lay on hands ability? If it calls for a caster level check, that means it's operating like Spell Resistance, and thus wouldn't interfere with the Paladin's lay on hands or any other Supernatural abilities (such as the tattoo)... |
| JohnduBois10-29-05, 02:04 PM | The curse specifically says, "the character is also resistant to magical healing of any type unless the caster can make a caster level check equal to your characters level plus eleven." So yes, as a DM, I would force a paladin who wishes to use lay on hands (or any character who wants to use magical healing of any kind) to make a caster level check, with the paladin's caster level being equal to the character's levels in paladin. |

Except that's not a Caster level check...Caster level is defined as "A measure of the power with which a spellcaster casts a spell", caster level checks have to do with spells (and are mentioned only with spells and spell like abilities)... Supernatural abilities don't have caster levels, don't make a character a "spellcaster", aren't cast as spells, and aren't subject to spell resistance... Nothing about the way the two different types of abilities operate suggests that supernatural abilities should be (or even can be) subject to a caster level check... |
| Talonas Elendril10-30-05, 07:55 AM | I have read some more and I will not require a roll because it is a supernatural ability and not a spell like effect! Until someone clarifys this this is how i will use it. (It will not break my game as it is after all 1 point / level per hour in sunlight, and he is only a first level Tattooed Monk) |
| TimRat10-31-05, 05:29 PM | I would rule since its a supernatural effect then you do not need to roll for the caster level check. tim VTF circle |
