Hi all,

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but the campaign source isn't clear on this...

Is a mithril shirt (DMG) considered to be core or do I need AR access?

Thanks

You need AR access, but they do seem to be quite common.

common no kidding... I got access to +1 Mithril Chain Shirt on one AR, then on my next I got access to Mithril Chain, +1, and +2 (all on one AR).

If you play enough Nyrond Modules, you will find more access than you need.

But the best way to ensure finding access is to do the fulling:
1. Purchase +1 Chain Shirt.
2. Play a Module.

If you follow those two steps, you will get access.

Tell me about it. My druid had access to a mithral chain shirt from lots of AR's but finally had to jon a meta-org to get access to Dragonhide. Now she is wearing a dragonhide breastplate and her tiger animal companion has a +1 mithral chain shirt (barding).

You can use Mithril chainshirt access to buy mithril chainshirt barding?

I am really suprised that this got past your GMs since it is not allowed unless the AR says you can buy a barding version. Of course that applies only to stuff that you got access to from an AR. PHB stuff like studded leather barding can be boughtI believe using normal rules.

Actually, the particular AR gave me access to have any item that I had access to crafted out of mithral and enchanted. I didn't use mithral chain shirt access to purchase mithral barding.

I got access to Mithril on one AR. It was very screwy though, IMO. AR 2 got access to Elven Chain. AR 4 got access to a Mithril shirt. The elven chain cost more, has higher AC, etc - but it is nigh impossible for a level 2 character to purchase. Meanwhile, the AR 4's get the mithril chain shirt that would be a GODSEND to the level 2's.

VERY screwy IMO. :P

I recently did a Core Mod, and its APL 10 treasure had a Pearl of Power 1. But the APL 2 treasure had a 27,000 gp item (insanely good item...).

Thanks for the replies.

From what I make out, unless we're playing regional modules I'm really gonna struggle to get access through core AR's.

Kinda sucks as we're struggling to reach higher APL's because our group keeps changing.

Oh well.

I might be mistaken, but I thought that a person had access to anything on their AR that was at or below the APL that was played. So that APL 2 treasure should have been available to you at APL 10.

Not always. I've seen some that say something like "APL4: All items from APL2, plus...", and I've seen others that have specific lists for each APL.

"I've taken a spiritual oath that wrapping my body in an unnatural metal shell is wrong, and severs my connection to the forces of nature. But I can wrap my kitty in as much tinfoil as he can carry!"

Not spelt out in the rules, but it does seem to go against the flavour of the druid class that the druid cannot wear metal armor, but has no problem with putting it on his companion.

I've never really thought about that. On the other hand, my druid is very concerned with the lives of her animal companions and doesn't put them in situations where she wouldn't go herself. At APL 8/10, the tiger's A/C 14 just doesn't cut it. Horses and other animals wear barding, so I don't see it as unreasonable. The mithral chain shirt has no armor check penalty, so I don't think it's a burden on the animal.

My companion has 6,400 GP worth of magic, the +1 mithral chain shirt and a +1 cloak of resistance (when I went to a +2 cloak). I think the tiger still has more magic than my PC.

I haven't wanted to put any metal on my companion wolf either. As a result, he only has an AC of 26. But he also has DR, SR, Resistances, and more HP than I do.

The thing that I wish to know is why is it that APL2 rewards tend to cost more than any level 2-4 character could ever afford while APL 6-10 rewards are ones that are cheaper and less effective than the APL's below them?

My example of the APL2 reward being Elven chain while APL 4 or 6 was a Mithril Chain Shirt. Elven chain costs more and is more effective (I believe) than the Mithril Chain shirt.
