| haferka02-12-06, 03:20 PM | Can PCs learn Monster Languages? Specificly: Blink Dog & Worg. I have a rather unique character concept, Druid/Marshal who will eventually be Dru3/Mar2/Beastmaster10. I am focusing on Riding Dog animal companions, but I want to get more advanced dog(s) as companions in the future. As a side note, I noticed that the Arms & Equipment guide lists that Blink dog is availible as an Improved Familiar, and that it takes the rider when using its DDoor ability. Would this also work for a Druid & his Blink Dog animal companion or Cohort (if I can't get it as a companion, i will get one as a cohort). On another side note, my druid org (fellreev druids :BK) gains +1 renown with Magic beasts, so I think getting a special mission for access is probably doable.. provided that It is LG legal. |

| haferka02-12-06, 10:13 PM | I think I remember seeing the "standard" list... but I'm sure that other languages are legal... since some regions add thier own flavor languages... I am under the impression that since the MM1 is CORE, the creatures inside it with specific languages are also CORE. Could I get an official ruling. Or a quote of any rule specivicly allowing (or not) the MM1 creature languages.. specificly: Blink Dog & Worg. |

I am under the impression that since the MM1 is CORE, the creatures inside it with specific languages are also CORE. If you're talking about Keolandish, Nyrondese, Velondi, etc., those are all LG-wide languages on that list... There are other languages noted on ARs, Kuo-Toa in particular I can remember in a Year 3 module. Since you need that AR to learn Kuo-Toa, that seems to clearly imply that MM languages are not core... But yes, an official list of what languages PCs can learn and what languages there are (including "restricted" languages) would be really great. |
| Casebier02-21-06, 06:53 PM | The MM listing of Blink dog says the Dim Door only takes the Blink Dog and the A&EG also says there's no way to Dim Door with a Blink Dog. Looking in BoED, there's a feat to give you access, but only if your alignment matches the creature you pick from the list. My Druid started out with a wolf companion and rode a riding dog. After the dog (and his wolf) got stoned by a cockatrice, he unstoned the wolf, put some barding on him, and rode the wolf instead. The wolf is now Celestial. I've found Celestial access in two different regions now. The only reason I haven't upgraded my Animal Companion from a wolf is because he hasn't died yet. Because the wolf is Celestial, he has an Intelligence of 3. This makes him automatically understand Common (since no other languages are mentioned), which allows me to ask him commands as free actions, making tricks somewhat pointless. If I could get his Cha to 13, I'd have him take the Improved Smite ability, but it's stuck at 6. |
