go druid till level 5, then beastmaster then outrider, that will keep your mount at a suitable level :-)

ok, your base BAB will not be great, so you need the mounted combat/spirited-charge/ride-by combo. that löeaves not much room for other feats.

If your goal is an exotic calvalry then you can forget druid and enter beastmaster through full bab classes instead. 6th level you can get it and get your exotic mount, until then just use a riding doggy.

I would actually delay going into Halfling Outrider a bit more in favor of the other Outrider class.

Here is what I would do:

Ranger 1/Druid 2/Fighter 2/Beastmaster 1/Wild Plains Outrider 3/Halfling Outrider into retirement

I like this build.. or go with Paladin 5/Beastmaster1/Halfing Outrider 10

do a Special Mission for access to a special mount. Take the devoted tracker feat, so your paladin mount gains all the Animal companion bonus HD, AC, etc... Halfing outrider has some wording that "arguably" allows its class level to add to your effective Druid AND Paldin for both paladin mount & Druid animal companion abilities. So you would have a 14th lvl Paladin mount & 14th lvl Druid animal companion (plus 3 levels that go put be pushed to either druid or Paldin).

"arguably" = the class ability states that the Halfling Outrider class level is added to the Druid, Paladin class levels for "one" creature. It also states that you add the level to Druid OR Paladin for this purpose. The wording was written at a time when the "devoted tracker" feat was not written, so at the time there was no way to combine the paladin mount & animal companion into a single creature.

you would likely need to create 2 seperate writeups for your mount.. 1 that adds halfing outrider lvls to BOTH classes, and 1 that adds to only 1.

Does your region give metaorg access to the Natural Bond feat? It would allow you to go straight Ranger/Beastmaster/Halfling Outrider.

As someone who plays a mounted halfling-type character (currently level 5) I feel rather qualified to give advice about this.

My own character is currently: ('planned' feats and levels are marked with a *)

Barbarian 1/Fighter 2/Ranger 2/*Animal Lord 1/*Beastmaster 1/*undecided.

Feats:

Ride By Attack
Mounted Combat
Power Attack
Spirited Charge
*Skill Focus (Handle Animal)

Up until I got my Gauntlets of Human Power (+2 strength), I had significant trouble hitting due because with spirited charge and a two handed lance, power attack was -1 attack for +6 damage; this was far too tempting and I often over-powerattacked. Still, when it hit, it was spectacular.

But...

If I were to do things over again, I would not use this build. Instead, I would go straight paladin, probably taking one level in Hospitalar to gain the bonus feat, then into cavalier.

This would mean that you gain a mount (equal to or better to your animal companion), you would have smite damage to make up for the lack of rage, and your saves would be better. As my character only has 8 wisdom, at level ten, his naked Will save will be +0. This is something I've had to sink considerable gold into changing (with more to come, I imagine).

Also... paladin opens up one NICE, NICE, NICE option with the Spell Compendium. If you can get access to a spell called 'Rhino Charge' (I believe?), it's a first level paladin spell, a swift action spell, which causes your charges to do double damage. Due to D&D's multiplication rules, that means that your spirited charges are doing 4x damage every time you use this spell (as a swift action, remember, so you can still charge) and your critical hits are 6x damage. OUCH. If you buy 10 wisdom during character creation, you can get a +2 wisdom booster (upgrade to +4 later, etc...) and be able to use this spell three or four times a day. Which is just plain wrong.

So, from someone who's been there, done that, I recommend against mutting your character. Rage and Ranger skill points seem tempting, they sure were for me, but if you don't get your mount till seventh level (like I currently) you WILL regret it.

Any questions (or even better, ideas!), ask away.

Cheers,

Puggle.

I've got a similar character. A Gnome Paladin with riding dog.

What maybe even better providing you can get access of some sort, is Rhino Armor. Every time you charge,(even when mounted!) you add 2d6 to the damage. Its about a little over 5000 gold, and its availible in the DMG. Its hide armor(+3AC), but it comes with a +2 enchantment. Its something I plan to purchase once I get the gold.

Speaking of paladin spells. You might want to take a look at Divine Sacrifice. I am not sure off-hand, but I think during the spell duration, you can give up 2HP to do an extra 1d6 damage. Or 6HP to do 3dg, or 8HP to do 4d6 extra, You get the picture.

Get yourself a Greatsword(Goodsword :D). You won't always be able to charge , so having a sword that can do good damage will be pretty nice.

Consumables. A couple of vials of quicksilver, alchemical fire, holy water, acid are nice. Quicksilver if you need to go up against vampires. Holy water too. You should always have an Oil Of Bless Weapon handy for enemies with DR/Good.

Flying enemies. You're likely not going to be able to hit flying enemies, since you won't be able to reach them. Very handy is either Enchanted slings or bows with Bane:Evil Outsider on them since they seem to be the most common flying enemies.

Armor spikes - Because something will try to grapple you at some point.

Umm...thats pretty much all I can think of at the moment.

Rhino Charge and Rhino Armor may be nice, but an actual rhinoceros is better.

My charger is currently a level 3 Ranger/Druid/Fighter. I plan on taking two more levels of Druid and then going into Beastmaster. At level 6, I can get a rhinoceros as an animal companion. We can both attack on a charge, and if we both hit, our unlucky opponent will take 3d8 + 4d6 + 33 damage.

Of course, you know whats even better than Rhino Charge, Rhino Armor, and the Rhino itself?

One word.

Triceratops. :D

Of course, access might be a problem, and riding one around in Greyhawk City(or anyother city for that matter) maybe a problem. But when you can, watch out!

Go Little People! (tm)

But to my point.

What maybe even better providing you can get access of some sort, is Rhino Armor. Every time you charge,(even when mounted!) you add 2d6 to the damage.

Ok. My character has access to anything (in the DMG?) under 10,000 gold pieces from a module. I just looked over Rhino Armour- all I can say is... what in the abyss? +2d6 damage to all charges? Now, to quote the SRD:

Rhino Hide: This +2 hide armor is made from rhinoceros hide. In addition to granting a +2 enhancement bonus to AC, it has a –1 armor check penalty and deals an additional 2d6 points of damage on any successful charge attack made by the wearer, including a mounted charge.

Now. Order of operations question. It states that it adds an 'additional' 2d6 points of damage. Does this equate to: (weapon damage + strength + magical weapon + 2d6 rhino armour) * 3x Spirited Charge? If so, that's an additional 6d6 to all mounted charges... which seems... well. A bargain for 5,165 gold pieces...

Is this how it works? If anyone can find a page reference to disprove this, I'd *welcome* it... but I think it works as written. If so, that's just... wow.

It'd be great if it was like that. Myself, I kinda thought it was (weapon damage + strength bonus + magical weapon bonus) * 3x Spirited Charge + 2d6. I could be wrong. Heck, I hope I am wrong.

...

I just had a sick thought. Rhino Armor barding? Bite + 2d6? Mwhahahahaha!

Hi

Someone quoted x4 damage on a charge. Hope they weren't thinking of double damage on charge x 2.

As PHB (Pg 304) puts it, double x double is triple. Or for complicated multiples, just minus 1 off the multiples except the first. That gives final multiplier. EG, Double x triple is quadruple damage.

In previous example, someone charging with a lance, using the Paladin spell, and critting is x5 damage. Damage * (2+1+2).

You can add any 'specials' like Sacrifice, the Rhino Armours +2D6, etc last.

Enlarged Paladin on Huge beast charging with lance would do (2D6+Str+Enhancement)*5 (+special damage) on crits. Ouch!

I figured that since my main character is a mounted halfling, I thought I would add a couple of things. This of course doesn't make me an expert, but this was my first LG character and was created with the help of a couple of friends and a fun idea.
First, here is my character. (* - future feats subject to change)

Halfling Spearchucker:
Classes:
Fighter 8 (And I plan on staying fighter all the way.)
Skills:
Handle Animal - max ranks
Ride - max ranks
Feats:
Quick Draw
Power Attack
Point Blank Shot
Precise Shot
Rapid Shot
Mounted Combat
Weapon Focus (Spear)
Weapon Specialization (Spear)
*Mounted Archery
*Brutal Throw
*Power Throw
*Greater Weapon Focus (Spear)
*Greater Weapon Specialization (Spear)
*Improved Critical (Spear)

Now, don't ask how, but I gained access to a Griffon at level 5. So my halfling fly's around on a large Griffon throwing spears at the enemy. It's a great build, and lots of fun. I've thought about going after a prestige class, namely Halfling Outrider, but I'd rather have access to all the feats with the fighter class than the special abilities the Halfling Outrider gives. I suppose my thoughts on this would be different if I had access to a special mount or animal companion through a class.

It's a fun build, not optimized, but definitely fun. I play the character as a free spirited Halfling who is there to help anyone in need, heedless of his own danger and always itching to get into a fight. He hates to sit around and ask questions, he is a man of action, always on the move. Needless to say its gotten him into more trouble then he's worth. That's why it's always good to have a cleric buddy around.

Like I said, its a fun build. :D

NeSoDak don't take mounted archery. It only helps when you double move. You almost never need to double move. Especially with quickdraw since you can switch to a bow if the distance is too great. Take Far Shot, Improved Toughness or almost anything else instead. Move power shot as early as possible.

The tunnel rider feat takes care of the "can't take your mount in here" problem.

I just came back from a weekend of trying my Druid 6/Beastmaster 1 Halfling with a new animal companion: a tiger! :)

It is a -5 to your ride checks, since it is an unusual mount, but the pounce makes it awesome.

On the pounce (without bumping, and I do lots of this), my tiger, and JUST the tiger, does:
4d8+2d6+23

And throw in Greater Magic Fang, Nature's Favor, Bull's Strength....he nailed a huge spider and left him staggered.... and my 1d4 took it down!

So yeah, I say max out the druid potential - turn your character into a spell-casting mech type - you'll be glad you did.

?, where is that rule? and... wouldnt an exotic sadle remove the penalty?

I'm just basing that on the fact that it is VERY unusual for a halfling to ride a tiger - a) it is not generally a mount; and b) it is large, and I am small.

Taking a reasonable minus into account generally makes it more acceptable for the DM.

Since it is Large... Dip a few more levels of Beastmaster.. to get 2 more animal companions.. make them both monkeys... give them Weapon Proviciency, Spiked Chain.. or something similarly broken...) buy 2 Sidesaddles.. I believe they are in arms & equipment guide... then you have yourself.. your 3 animal companions... all attacking....with every charge...

you could potentially replace the animal comanions in sidesaddles with other pcs... if they fit... you would need to lookup the saddle...

Since everyone is posting their builds, I'll show you what I came up with... I know it's not the greatest... BUT...

Ranger 1
Paladin 2-6
Halfling Outrider 7-9
Wild Plains Outrider 10-12
Cavalier 13-15

Gives me a 14th level paladin's mount... uber riding dog. +20 to base movement, +40 if riding defensively...
