Since it seems to be the day for questions ...

I've got the Greyhawk Gazetteer, but its account of history ends about 5 or 6 years ago. How can a new player catch up? Are old modules available to be read by non-DMs? Even if they are, is it a good idea?

Some regions have summaries or other ways of letting players keep up with past plot lines on their websites. They may not reveal much about current story arcs to avoid spoilers.

Unfortuantely, old modules aren't available, even just for "reading" purposes. Even if they were, they might not be a good indicator of what happened, since, in many cases, the "actual" history was determined by the actions of PCs, and the modules themselves don't always reflect that.

look at your regional website and the other regions of your metaregion. some adventures that are part of a longer story arc may contain a short introduction for those characters (players) that have not participated in the first part(s).

old modules are sometimes misleading at best, confusing or wrong (according to "REAL" events) at worst. and not all modules were right even when they were playable, due to events that changed the premises of the module in question.

All regions should IMO have a regional history online. Most currently do have such a history. I would suggest joining you regions yahoo group and asking for a summary. You also can meet local players. A lot of modules are not something anyone would know in character happened unless they played the module. It makes for a richer table interaction when you can say oh you contained the planar rift... I've never heard of it so you must have done a good job. Sure some mods end with a king dieing or a town blowing up and you would definately have heard of these events in character but I beleive this is the exception not the rule.
