I was just curious as to which of the new ADP mods are being converted to LG play and if so, what is their approximate timeline for release?

Scourge of the Howlong Horde

Barrow of the Fogoten King

The Sinister Spire

Demonweb Pits

FL: City of Peril

FL: Frostfell Rift

FL: Dragondown Grotto

Fortress of the Yaun-ti

WOW, if all of these get Adapted, us LG players are going to get spoiled! :D

Theres a post somewhere on the boards that Scourge will be adapted.

I think that it'd be good if the others get adapted as well. The DD series (Barrow of the Forgotten King, The Sinister Spire and Fortress of the Yuan-Ti) would make for great follow-ons for Scourge. A nice adventure path that could take you from 1st to 7th(?) level. I've not seen any of the adaptables so far so don't know how the adaptions stack up against the originals as far as xp goes.

Basically, I'm all for WotC publishing adventures that we can use in the LG campaign.

I think it's been stated that Frostfell Rift will not be adapted, as it is not a single adventure but a series of encounters designed to be spread through a longer campaign and thus really not going to work in Living Greyhawk. The product catalog entry for City of Peril looks like it'll be the same.

Scourge of the Howlong Horde: Definite yes. It is with my fellow circle members for review right now, and should go to RPGA HQ in a couple of days.

Barrow of the Fogoten King: Being looked at as we speak, but probably yes.

The Sinister Spire: No idea.

Demonweb Pits: Being looked at as we speak, but very likely. It is Greyhawk afterall... Note though that there might be unexpacted issues because such as with Slaughtergarde that make adaptation ultimately impossible. [Note that the issues have nothig to do with the quality of the adventure, but with the limitations of a LG.]

FL: City of Peril: Probably.

FL: Frostfell Rift: Probably... The adaptation document is with RPGA HQ for review. There are some EL issues with it which made adapting difficult.

FL: Dragondown Grotto: Very Likely... the adaptation document is with RPGA HQ for review. I think it is the best of the Fantastic Locations.

Fortress of the Yaun-ti: No idea.

In none of the cases do I know when they become available or even if they become available even when the stuff is at the RPGA HQ. There are so many things that could raise issues at varies levels of the adaptation stage. Still, with the above you know what to avoid in your home campaigns for the moment if you really want to play it in LG.

Can I start begging for details now?

- What is the APL? Is it 1st level or 1st AR only?
- Any additional restrictions against combat animals (since dogs / warhorses can seriously affect low-APL combats).
- Any special / recommended overlaps between SotHH and the Greyhawk Ruins? Is it possible for a Ruins PC to play SotHH or a SotHH PC to play Ruins?
- How many TUs?
- Is there only a single XP & GP cap or is it tiered based on # PCs (like Mad God's Key)?
- How long does it take to run?
- Will it put PCs to 2nd level? 3rd level?

On a more personal note, has the Circle has gotten any feedback from WotC on the Adapted's?

Cheers,

The following answers are based on current documents, and might change in the near future!

- What is the APL? Is it 1st level or 1st AR only?

1st level only, but it doesn't have to be the 1st AR.

- Any additional restrictions against combat animals (since dogs / warhorses can seriously affect low-APL combats).

For the moment the normal rules apply.

- Any special / recommended overlaps between SotHH and the Greyhawk Ruins? Is it possible for a Ruins PC to play SotHH or a SotHH PC to play Ruins?

Scourge of the Howling Horde counts as a regular adaptation adventure. It will be set in the Domain of Greyhawk City.

- How many TUs?

5

- Is there only a single XP & GP cap or is it tiered based on # PCs (like Mad God's Key)?

Single.

-How long does it take to run?

I have no clue...

- Will it put PCs to 2nd level? 3rd level?

It gives a PC just enough xp to his 2nd level, but that assumes they get max.

On a more personal note, has the Circle has gotten any feedback from WotC on the Adapted's?

I don't understand the question...

On a related note, I just check the adventure section of the RPGA and noted that ADP7-01 Dragondown Grotto is available for order as of 8 March. It is for 10th level characters.

What sort of things would make an adaptation impossible? What eliminated Slaughtergarde from contention, for example?

The first thing we look at is whether or not an adventure fits in Greyhawk. Ravenloft for example is too closely associated with another setting, and while anything can be adapted with enough work, there are better ways to spend our time (especially since there are enough other things available). Sometimes an adventure is set in such an exotic locale, or contains plot-points that would simply take too much time to adapt or adaptation would ruin the adventure.

The second thing is that during the first fase of adaptation we take a detailed look at ELs, xp, treasure and whether or not the speed of leveling is the same in LG as the adventure assumes. It was in this phase that Slaughtergarde proved to be too difficult to adapt. The adventure consists of several parts, and the assumption is that a character players other adventures in between each part, preferably related to the overall plot-line. Making this work properly within LG would have been more time than is worth it. If it had been one of few adventures to be adapted, we would likely have done so anyway, but with all the adventures due out the next 6 months we thought it was better to spend our time on the Greyhawk stuff - which will be difficult enough considering the size of Demonweb Pits and Castle Greyhawk ;)

There might be more reasons not to adapt something, but those have not yet surfaced.

I don't understand the question...

I was aiming for short & sweet but I hit short & vague.

What I meant was, has WotC said anything to the Circle about the Adapted program? Do they like that you're doing Adapteds? Have they made any suggestions / requests / commands? Do they know Adapteds exist?

I believe that LG-Adapted purchases should produce a "blip" on their sales radar - especially for modules like RHoD that had been on shelves a while before the LG version was announced. I'm not sure how noticable our purchases are though.

What I'm thinking is that if WotC likes the Adapted program, that is good news for our campaign. It means that they're seeing another way that LG / RPGA is an asset to their bottom line. This might make WotC Marketing (or whomever) willing to help the Circle in some way - perhaps funding for a campaign assistant. IMHO any love / help from WotC is better for the LG Campaign. It also increases the chance of more LG / Dungeon adventures (Mad God's Key) or Greyhawk material (X2tRoGH).

Also, I believe that the only thing stopping them from coming out with 4e is that they're still successful at selling 3.5 product. :P

Thank you for your answers, Pieter.

Well, Chris Tulack and Ian Richards are on the pay-roll of WotC, so obviously WotC knows adapteds exist. The D&D designers and editors with an interest in the RPGA obviously do as well. Whether or not the suits know it exist, I have no clue. They certainly do not get involved in the process, nor do any official designers btw (at least not with the actual adaptation process of the adventures I have been involved with). They haven't said anything about the program itself.

I wouldn't know either. We don't get to see sales numbers either ;) I am not sure whether it is noticable for adventures though.

Yep, although do you really need more adventures? I mean they publish two huge Greyhawk adventures (Demonweb Pits and Castle Greyhawk) this year, and we are adapting several more.

Especially because the nature of the distribution system in the game industry likely smooths these things out.

WotC clearly is aware of when they get orders from their distributors (and if there's a "spike" in those orders). However, distributors only order when they get low on their inventory...and retail stores only order when they get low (or out) on *their* inventory.

So, a bunch of LGers run out and buy Dragondown Grotto at their FLGS, because it just became available for LG play. The stores may or may not be triggered into ordering more copies, depending on how many they sell, and whether that's enough to deplete their inventory. That may cause a spike that the distributors notice...but unless that spike is enough to deplete the distributors' stock, the sales surge doesn't immediately get passed along to WotC, and thus, it may be hard for them to see the direct effect of the ADP.

(I used to work in market research for a major food manufacturer. Grocery stores sell their sales data to research companies; using that data, we could easily see if a particular promotional event had an impact in sales, on a weekly basis. Unfortunately, nothing like that exists for the gaming industry, and so, it's much more difficult to see the relationship between marketing efforts and short-term sales.)

On top of that you also have to consider a number of people will buy the product for use in LG, before LG approves it. For example, I bought several books before the 597 LGCS came out and the books were not part of the 596 LGCS.
The only D&D I play is LG, but I guessed LG would approve at least parts of those books in LGCS 597 so I went ahead and bought them ahead of time.

Do we have any new updates on the ADP mods that will be coming out? Obviously, Dragondown Grotto and Scourge of the Howling Horde have progressed somewhat, and Castle Greyhawk has the Greyhawk Ruins lead-in planned, but it would be nice to get information on the others.

Of particular concern I guess is Demonweb Pits. It would be great if I could use the same character to play Fane of the Drow at APL 4 and then catch Demonweb Pits later on to continue the fight against Lloth's minions, but the reputed size of Demonweb Pits as well as the much-higher APL might cause some problems with that.

Do we know if Demonweb Pits is on the same scale as Red Hand of Doom? Will we be seeing similar problems with it?

I've really been loving the ADP mods. Even with how bulky Red Hand is, I've enjoyed playing it, and it's great to have it available.

Demonweb Pits is being adapted. It starts at APL 10 and it should take characters to level 12 (or so says the adventure). I have no clue how many TUs it will take since it has some open ended side-tracks and I am not 100% sure on what the end decision was on those.

An ADP that takes PCs from 10 to 12 sounds an awful lot like Red Hand's 6 to 9 range in terms of TUs. (At the discretion of the reviewers of course) The Red Hand of Doom was worth the trouble of a 51 TU mod in my opinion, however, so I'll expect Demonweb Pits to be the same if it ends up being similar in size.

Level 10 (45,000xp) to Level 12 (66,000xp) requires ~21,000xp. I'll assume that half is APL10 and half is APL12. Any APL11portions will match this (midway between APL10&12). APL10 gives 1350xp / round. APL12 gives 1575xp / round. Average xp / round is 1462.5. 21,000 / (1462.5 xp / round) = 14.4 rounds. ADP rounds cost 2 TUs each so 29 TUs.

Just an estimate, of course. But ~30 TUs should be a LOT easier to fit into a PC's CY597-598 schedule than RHoD's 51TUs. Provided that the Players have PCs close to the starting level (9th-10th), of course. I suspect that there will be many post-RHoD PCs paying Lolth a visit. Of course, if a Player doesn't have any higher-level PCs, there are plenty of other adventures they can play.

FL: Frostfell Rift

Now available for download:

The depths of the Corusk Mountains can be an unforgiving land where cold and terrain can kill as swiftly as the predators that stalk in the desolation. Few sane people would ever dare enter the place. But hidden within the ice and snow are mysteries and challenges that draw the adventurous nonetheless. A two-part adapted adventure for APL 6 (Part 1) and APL 14 (Part 2), based on Fantastic Locations: The Frostfell Rift by Ari Marmell. Each part is played separately, in any order, and you do not have to play Part 1 to play Part 2. You can purchase this product at your local game store. This is a retail and home event that will likely take many sessions to play. This adventure costs 4 Time Units (TUs).

Does this have a "cannot judge one part if you have judged the other part" problem, similar to RHoD?
