Hello all!

I am introducing myself, Tim Sech, as the new RPGA person to answer questions just on the RPGA boards itself within the WOTC site. I am essentially taking the reigns over and will answer (or try to find out the answers) to any and all questions you may have. I may not answer all of them right away but rest assured I will let you know i'm looking into it.

As some of you may know I am one of the Living Greyhawk Circle members for the VTF region. So I can pretty much answer any LG question right away and if there is a question that requires the entire circle's attention I will bring it to them.

I will of course be on the other RPGA boards (LF, General, Green Regent, etc) answering as many questions as I can. Again this will not be immediate all the time but i hope its timely enough for you.

Thanks again for reading this (sorry about posting it on each of the boards but have to be thorough).

If you have any questions post away!

Hi Tim,

First and foremost, a long standing request, how about making the whole business with "How can I get my hands on retired RPGA Adventures?" sticky, so it's not tough to find.

It's a Frequently asked and answered question that would make sense to be made sticky.

Bill Kronick

Oh the retired module question LOL. Well the reason why its sticky is that in year 1 and 2 the modules were purchased by WOTC (or at least the authors were paid by WOTC for writing them) thus they held on to their rights. How long i'm not to sure but its been a while. I do know that if the author of a retired adventure wishes to have it go out to the public they can do this (this applies more to year 3 modules) but they have to strip the module of anythign to do with Greyhawk and basic dnd things and have it basically be a generic D20 adventure.

I would not hold my breath on seeing retired scenarios for download anywhere however in the near future. sorry.

Thanks

So conversion has arrived and I plan on converting my 12th level char into a
Druid 5 / Master of Many Forms 7.

The problem is that the Master of Many Forms text does not specify that the levels in MoMF stack with druid levels for Hit Dice limits for wild shape forms.

Thus my druid 5 /MoMF 7 is limited to wild shape forms of 5 hit dice or less.

I have heard that this was an oversite and that the MoMF levels were intended to stack with druid levels for wild shape purposes and that it will be corrected in a forthcoming errata. Could we get a LG ruling or errata asap.

Without such a ruling the MoMF class is almost useless in combat situations and my character would have to be mothballed until the errata is published which could take months.

Thanks,
Rob

I have a low level bard whom I have not yet converted, and it occurred to me: he's a Diplomacy (the skill) based character, but I wouldn't want him to make the party miss out on XP. The PHB suggests that any intelligent opponent can have its attitude raised from Hostile to Indifferent by a DC 25 Diplomacy check (or DC 35 rushed). The DMG doesn't add much, though the "convincing a dragon to let you go" only adds to that idea.

After reading this, it seems too simple, so my question is: are there any rules and/or exceptions to what the PHB says? Also, when would Diplomacy count as "skillfully avoiding combat" for the purposes of XP, and when wouldn't it? In other words, can a Diplomacy based character work in LG?

Thanks in advance

You're totally at the mercy of the DM. He can assign whatever circumstance bonuses he wants to your diplomacy event. If you're successful, you'll probably get full XP for the encounter.

But you're going to be hosed in treasure. A major part of the treasure (and item access) in LG is tied to looting the bodies of your foes. Guess what, if you avoid combat by diplomacy, you don't get to Greyhawk your opponents.

To the answer of the Master of Many forms we have to wait until it is officially said that it was a mistake. So until then its treated as its written.

For the castle greyhawk results those should be coming shortly. I know i personally gave the person the papers 2 months ago so its a matter of really just putting it up on the website.

For the survey i don't think you'll see the results posted yet or in any form as i wasn't aware of it.

When you buys arrows made of special materials, how many do you have to buy at once? 50? 20? 5? any number?

I looked in the LGCS. It looks like page 16 should have the relevant information, but it's still not clear to me.

Thanks.

(1) If there's a cleric of Telchur who has the Winter domain from Frostburn, he gets access to all of the domain spells. (The same concept applies to a cleric of Kurell who has the Greed domain from Dragonomicon.)

If those spells are available as both domain spells and as non-domain cleric spells, can that cleric prepare those spells as non-domain spells?

(2) A neutral Pious Templar can use the Blackguard spell list. The Blackguard spell list contains a spell called Corrupt Weapon, which is like Bless Weapon, only evil. Is this allowed in LG? The LGCS doesn't make it clear.

(3) The Nature's Favor (Edit: was Naturewatch) spell was first published in Complete Divine, with a maximum of +5. The Complete Divine errata changed this to max +3. Then the Complete Adventurer was published, changing it back to max +5. How should we treat this in LG? Does the "most recently published source" rule apply, so we should treat Nature's Favor (Edit: was Naturewatch) as max +5 (per CV)?

Hey, Tim. Glad to have tracked you down. :)
I was wondering what your take - and the VTF circle's, by association - was on the synergy between Improved Turning and Divine Spell Power.
There's a thread parallel to this one where I've been looking for a circle ruling, but I'll post it in here, too.
Thanks, in advance.

For the cold iron alchemical silver ones you can freely buy those no matter how many you need (cold iron is so cheap that it doesn't matter) for individual arrows.

I'll get to the other questions in time.

Hey,

I'm (kind of) new to the RPGA (and Livig Greyhawk), but not to D&D. I've always been interested in trying out the Planar Champion, but notice Manual of the Planes is not listed in the included books. May I ask the reason for this? So far I've played in two low level adventures, and they've both had extra-planar issues. When I last played in the RPGA (three years ago), it seems to me quite a few modules then had extra-planer subject matter as well.

Speculating here, but I'd guess it's at least in part because MotP is a 3E book, and the RPGA just finished removing all of the 3E sourcebooks from the LG campaign.

Hmm, it could be I was misreading the LG guidelines, but it seemed that the splat books (T&B, S&F, etc) still were in use except where the new books overwrote them. But I only skimmed over some of the pages, so there could have been something I missed.

Nope, Splat books are completely gone...Page 24 of the LGCS 4.2 has the list of "core books"...

I'd still like the answer to Dracspero's (slightly modified) original question though. Is there any reason why the 3.5 Planar Handbook isn't used in Living Greyhawk? Some of the stuff in there would fit quite well.
TimRat

04-11-05, 06:32 PM
The planar book can only be used by authors. It can't be used to grab things out of there like say the DMG. now if authors wish to put things in (say spells, feats, etc) into a mod and give access they may do that if they so choose and its approved by the circle member.

Its a busy time of the year right now so the answers to some of the questions are still being sought.

For the pious templar spell question change the corrupt weapon with bless weapon which is the equivalent and not evil.

Just to consolidate my remaining spell list questions in one place:

===
If there's a cleric of Telchur who has the Winter domain from Frostburn, he gets access to all of the domain spells. (The same concept applies to a cleric of Kurell who has the Greed domain from Dragonomicon.)

If those spells are available as both domain spells and as non-domain cleric spells, can that cleric prepare those spells as non-domain spells?

===

The Rune domain from Sandstorm has two problems:

1) The Planar Binding spell is listed in the LGCS as Restricted. Is there a replacement level 5 spell? (I suggest Symbol of Sleep.)

2) The Transcribe Symbol spell is not listed in the LGCS. (There is a similar situation for non-PH spells in the Greed domain and the Surelife spell in the Repose domain.) Does this mean that clerics with this domain have access to the spell?

===

The Nature's Favor spell was first published in Complete Divine, with a maximum of +5. The Complete Divine errata changed this to max +3. Then the Complete Adventurer was published, changing it back to max +5. How should we treat this in LG? Does the "most recently published source" rule apply, so we should treat Nature's Favor as max +5 (per CV)?

===

The following spells seem to have the wrong names:

3RD-LEVEL BLACKGUARD SPELLS
Protection from Energy (Listed as Protection from Elements in DMG)

3RD-LEVEL HUNTER OF THE DEAD SPELLS
Protection from Energy (Listed as Protection from Elements in CW)

2ND-LEVEL KNIGHT OF THE CHALICE SPELLS
Bear’s Endurance (Listed as Endurance in CW)
Resist Energy (Listed as Resist Elements in CW)

3RD-LEVEL KNIGHT OF THE CHALICE SPELLS
Protection from Energy (Listed as Protection from Elements in CW)

4TH-LEVEL KNIGHT OF THE CHALICE SPELLS
Visage of the Deity, Lesser (Listed as Lesser Aspect of the Deity in CW)

1ST-LEVEL TEMPLE RAIDER SPELLS
Hide from Undead (Listed as Invisibility to Undead in CD)

What should we do about these spells? Should we use the name substitution rules (per the Living Greyhawk Campaign 3.5 Conversion Document, page 8) or should we drop them from the spell lists?

What about Visage of the Deity, Lesser vs. Lesser Aspect of the Deity? It's not mentioned in the 3.5e Conversion Document.

Not entirely true. A character could have purchased one under Open Access in Year 2. Alternatively, there are favors which would give access to it (due to saying, for example, that a character can purchase any item from certain tables in the DMG, up to 25,000 gp in value.)

It might not ever actually come up, but since it could, it is a question worth knowing the answer to. :)

Hrm...The manuals are listed as valid items of the 595 Conversion doc as well...We'll I'll be, I thought they didn't want Golems in the campaign...If that's the case, sloppy that...Though it might be wonky having an item that provides a feat that PCs can't take (I wonder if that's how they're prohibited)...

And there are actually such open favors that have no gp settlement limit (don't ya'll wish you played in the Splintered Suns meta-region :P ) I'm getting a ring of blinking with that favor, though I've toyed with the idea of buying an apparatus of Kwalish :D

I remember playing a mod within the last year that gave you access to a Flesh Golem manual, but you had to be a true neutral cleric of Wee Jas to actually buy it. I wish I remember the mod name, but it is still valid, so I wouldn't want to spoil it.

Tim, I don't want to be rude or accusatory, but something seems to be preventing you from answering campaign questions in a timely manner. I don't expect instant answers, and I truly appreciate an appropriate amount of reflection and discussion by the Circle before setting campaign policy, but it's been a while now and I'd like to get some answers to the spell list questions I've posted.

Would you please let us know what's happening in the Circle's decision-making process? Thanks!

The RPGA website being absorbed is going to take some time. its quite an undertaking thats for sure. the web dwarf is hard at work on it.

for the questions in everything the thing is a lot of them have to go to R&D which takes quite a long time. (like the nature's favor one..have to figure out which one is right.)

for the spell list i thought i had mentioned to switch out the ones you listed and use those. and the visage/aspect ones.

As for your Divine Spell Power/Improved Turning question, the answer is no. The Improved Turning feats specifically says "You turn or rebuke creatures as if you were one level higher than the class that grants you the ability."

those are the ones i have for now.

Hi Tim,

Do you know if the warmage is allowed to take the spells from Complete Arcane before they are 3rd level if they are on the warmage spell list? The book says that once a warmage gains access to a spell level, they gain access to all spells from the warmage spell list for that level. Someone told me that you only gain access to the 1st level CA warmage spells after you are 3rd level, but clerics may take first level spells from domains in Complete Divine if their god grants that domain and the spell is an allowable one. I can't find any reference in LGCS that says anything one way or the other.

Thanks in advance!! :D

That one's been answered repeatedly here in recent months.

Short answer: no. Even though the CA spells are on the Warmage spell list, you don't have access to them until you reach 3rd (character) level.

(You correctly point out that clerical domain spells are an exception to this rule...but the Circle has decided that Warmages are not.)

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=lg/articles/if20050510a

Q: Some clerics in the Living Greyhawk campaign have access to domains from books such as Frostburn, Draconomicon, and Sandstorm. Some of the spells on those domains’ lists are not listed as core access in the Living Greyhawk Campaign Sourcebook. Other spells aren’t listed at all. Does a cleric with access to a domain get access to all the spells in that domain as well?

A: If a cleric has a domain that has spells that aren't normally accessible to that character, they receive access to the spells for the domain only. They cannot prepare or spontaneously cast the spell as part of a class spell list. They can only prepare those spells as domain spells until they obtain access in the traditional way (through campaign documentation).

Q: The Rune domain (from Sandstorm) lists the spell planar binding as a 5th-level domain spell. I thought planar binding was restricted in the Living Greyhawk campaign. What gives?

A: Planar binding is restricted in the Living Greyhawk campaign. In Living Greyhawk, clerics with the Rune domain have access to symbol of sleep at the 5th-level of the domain instead of planar binding.

If you were e-mailed an RPGA number from RPGA HQ or WOTC customer service use that e-mail, just print out a copy of the e-mail and use that number. Sometimes it takes a while to get a physical card from HQ.

Hello,

I'm starting up a character in Living Greyhawk, and I have a question about level limits. According to the LGCS doc, the current level limit is 18th, but is changing to 16th at the beginning of 2006. How does that affect my character? I know I won't reach high level before next year, so what determines the limit? Is it when you start your character, or the year in which he attains high level? It's the level limit when you reach that level...As of January 1st 2006, all existing characters of 16th and 17th level will retire, and any that subsequently reach that point will retire upon reaching 16th...

In summary: You create character as normal and it's first scenario must be Blood on Bright Sands (but it can then play any other scenarios as normal). If you want, you can use build options/regional feats presented in BoBS sourcebok.

Other races (Asherati, Scabland orc) are freely available but to play Desert Centaur requires that you have 20 reward points and the special AR.

With regard to new dieties.

Given a reasonable roleplay reason, can a character simply switch dieties in LG ?
JohnduBois

06-23-05, 06:42 AM
Yes and no. If your character's choice of deity is simply a roleplaying choice to begin with (the case with most combat and arcane characters), you can switch when you want to. If you draw powers from a deity as a cleric, paladin, or favored soul, there are requirements for doing so, including an atonement spell. The guidelines for that are in the LGCS.

In the Living Greyhawk Deities PDF, it says that only Clerics and Favored Souls need to declare a Deity. For everyone else (except maybe for Pious Templars and such) it doesn't matter.

But even if you are not a cleric, you still have to abide by the racial restrictions on non-human deities. That one kind of caught me off guard when I first saw it, because as far as I could tell that wasn't the case previously. I had a halfling fighter type character that worshipped and elven deity, but I had to change it when the new document came out.
