As this has 2 ARs, is it considered one adventure (like most multi-round scenarios) or two (in the way that Red Hand of Doom is considered to be five adventures)?

Can you play adventures between the parts?

Can you play the second part, if you didn't play the first part? If so, how can we report the parts if different combinations of people play the different parts?

Apologies if this is answered in the Adaptation document - if it were actually available to order I'd find out who in our group might be running it and have them download it, but it's not actually accessible right now!

APL 2? So an assumable (if possibly incorrect) 5.5*APL2 experience/gold cap?

APL 2? So an assumable (if possibly incorrect) 5.5*APL2 experience/gold cap?

One AR at APL4. One AR at APL5. The level 2-5 text is from the retail package. I'm estimating xp/gp as roughly 4,000 between both parts based upon 5.5*(avg(apl4, apl5)).

:D ill let chris know about this. it is HIGHLY recommended that you play it all the way through. it will make no sense really if you stop after the first AR. its not that big of an adventure as you could probably get it done in about 2 sessions with a 3rd or 4th level party. now of course after your done with part 1 you get your AR and you could level up then play the next one.

Expedition to the Demonweb Pits however is one where you can play adventures in between them much like red hand of doom since its a very large adventure. i'm hoping to finish that up this week (the ARs are done just have to go through the adapting text part but for the most part its going to be run as is.)

As far as i know sinister spire (the sequel to barrow) will be adapted unless we find out it has wacky stuff in it like airships :D

It seems to be a single adventure for purposes of reporting, but I'm not sure about space in your AR stack - Red Hand has multiple reporting pieces, Barrow doesn't, but Barrow has multiple ARs. Guidance might be good there (i.e. how it affects Adventure access if it's abnormal, crafting between the ARs, etc)

What's wrong with airships?!? I thought they were a Fantasy RPG standard! :D

P.S. can you smell the sarcasm from where you're sitting? If not, I'll move closer.

Chris, don't we also need two different listings, one for the APL4 and one for the APL5? This is how Frostfell and RHoD are done. Alternatively, how do we report playing just the first part?

So where is this normally announced? Shouldn't the rpga site have a list of adapted scenarios plus rules? I just can't find the info I need unless I explicitly ask it here... A link, anyone?

I assume that it is considered a multi-round event. So it gets reported as a single event. That means you can't have AR's in between the two for this event.

They probably split AR's to allow people to level after the first half and for a good breaking point to split it up into more than one huge session.

I'm really close to that. I have a RHoD char, and my other two (15 and 4) each have about 11 TUs left. I'm zero-slotting stuff for Akon right now, so lots and lots of mods getting played, so that total will go down tremendously.

Oh well, my level 1 druid will finally see the light of day :). First Scourge then Barrow with her, then who knows?

No, as other posters have remarked, this is treated more like a multi-round single adventure. You play Barrow straight through. Think of it like a regional or metaregional adventure that has an extended play opportunity.

With Red Hand of Doom and Frostfell Rift, there is allowance made for play of other adventures in-between. For RHoD, it was necessitated due to the TU cost; for Frostfell Rift, the two parts had different enough APLs so that you could play it with either two different characters, or play adventures in-between to level up to the higher level section.

ya it starts at APL 4 only b/c 1st level characters (which by the way i would play scourge of the howling horde first then go into barrow) will have a very hard time with the adventure.

this adventure makes no sense if you split it in half. and yes you are right the reason for teh split is to level you up in between (if you are 2nd when playing it at least)

Tim,
Is it recommended for plot reasons that PCs who played Scourge play Barrow, or is it merely convenient due to the scaling APLs?

my understanding is that there is sequels to the Barrow. If you run Barrow will you be able to run the following adventures? I'm thinking about eating for the group and I don't want to end up eating all three mods.
DroidTrooper

Barrows is definately the first part of a trilogy. The Sinister Spire is part 2, schedule for release in June. I don't imagine you will have any issue with not being able to play the other parts though as they are total seperate and self contained modules.

Also note that (as mentioned, I think in a different thread) that no product is guaranteed to be adapted until the Circle have seen the published adventure which (I believe) doesn't happen until it hits the shelves. Most people are assuming that Sinister Spire and the third part will be suitable for LG conversion, and there's no real reason to doubt it ... but it's not certain until the Circle say it is!

...until the Circle have seen the published adventure which (I believe) doesn't happen until it hits the shelves.

I hope this isn't true. It would make more sense for the Circle to get copies as soon as it's finalized / gone to the printers. That way, the ADPs can come out sooner & be legal longer (encouraging play & sales). Of course, with the amount of work the Circle does, it's possible that this wouldn't really help. ;)

More importantly, I really hope that the Circle members involved in ADP conversion are given free copies. They're volunteers that are working towards the enjoyment of numerous gamers and they're promoting purchase of WotC products. If the Circle reviewers are getting hosed, I'd be happy to sign a petition or donate funds.

I've played both Scourge of the Howling Horde, and Barrow. And unless we missed something they aren't connected plotwise. Its just that the scaling is convienent, that you'd run one right after the other.

It might just have been a house rule, but we were required to use lvl 1 characters for Scouge, and level 2 characters for Barrow.
Shieldhart91

05-27-07, 11:01 PM
I know that Scourge requires Level 1 characters- you cannot play with 2nd or higher level characters.
Timlagor

05-28-07, 07:47 PM
Scourge does.. I don't know of any such requirement for Barrow though.

The Adaptation document for Barrow says: "The APL of this adventure is 4/5, and the adventure is recommended for characters of levels 2-5. Characters of 6th level and higher may not find the adventure challenging enough, while 1st level characters will be overwhelmed."

Seems legal, but I wouldn't play a 6th level character through it. Having played it, it really is a mod that 3rd/4th level characters will find challenging, 2nd level characters will struggle to not die/prove useful in, and 5th level characters will start to break.
TimRat

05-28-07, 08:57 PM
ya 6th level characters for barrow will have an easy time IMO. scourge and barrow have no real connection other than convenience of what level you are afterwards.

as far as getting them early and such nope we have to wait just like everyone else. they release these for general play its just that we like to take advantage of these and give more play opportunities to folks out there to play them with their LG characters.

and for what the one person said - we do have to look it over and see if it meshes well with LG and its whereabouts.

by the way demonweb was sent in so expect that soon. i think its a great adventure honestly.

Seems the answer is "yes but it's not advised". Run Scourge first so the hubby has a 2nd too and the wife has two to choose from ..then play some more to get them to 3rd ;)

I've gotta agree. I ran Barrow a few weekends ago and a 6th level character will walk over 90% of the encounters. Yes, they can still technically play the APL4 and 5 ARs and get full xp, but they'll pretty much ruin the mod.
I ran it with 2 3rds and 3 2nds and they had a fun, challenging time and all survived.
Just my 2cp.

My group is thinking of doing Barrow straight after Scourge so we'd be a group of 6 2nd level. Would you recommend that or would we be better waiting until 3rd level before trying it?
I was also wondering how the TUs are split among the ARs; we don't want to start the mod and find we don't make 3rd level after the first AR so we end up getting half xp for the second one. Assuming we survived that is :)

That's exactly what half of my group did (Scourge then straight into Barrow). I think that 6 2nd levels with a good party mix shouldn't have too much trouble.

If I remember correctly, the first AR gives you just enough to go from 2nd to 3rd. Like 2050 or something. So all your 2nds should make 3rd and get full xp for the second AR. No worries there.
As you said, assuming you survive... :)
