| Sceadeau01-09-06, 05:00 PM | I've never quite understood overcap money, every DM I've ever run under has had slightly different adjucations of overcap. So, I will ask specific questions, and will see if we can get a consensus on what is supposed to happen: 1) Can I buy back scrolls used in an adventure with overcap money? (For example, had a scroll of bless on my sheet going in, used it, then had 100gp overcap...could i buy back 1 scroll and not lose it?) 2) Can I buy back spell components used with overcap? (I have a warmage and like casting "hail of stones" with a material component of 5gp per cast. Is that overcappable?) 3) If my horse dies during the adventure, can I buy a new one with overcap? 4) If my PC dies in the adventure, can I pay for a reincarnate with overcap? Thanks |

This is how it has been done in the past in my experience. When the loot gets to be over the cap money at a certain point in time. Then you can use that money as you would like to buy perrishable things. They dissapear in the end. For example, in one mod, apl 10, we found four +3 short bows. That is 36,000 gold and enouph to go over the cap. we were able to raise the dead, give money to the poor farmers in the mod to be taken care of and have enouph left over for the cap money we needed. So, I will ask specific questions, and will see if we can get a consensus on what is supposed to happen: 1) Can I buy back scrolls used in an adventure with overcap money? (For example, had a scroll of bless on my sheet going in, used it, then had 100gp overcap...could i buy back 1 scroll and not lose it?) Any thing you buy must perrish in the end. The effects of the stuff you buy can be long lasting if you cast them, but nothing you can keep long term. 2) Can I buy back spell components used with overcap? (I have a warmage and like casting "hail of stones" with a material component of 5gp per cast. Is that overcappable?) In my experience, yes, DM's allow this. Once you get over the cap money you can cast all the hail of stones you want. Before you get the over the cap money of course it comes out of your pocket. This is my idea, I've seen players get by this saying all their spells are over the cap money. Particularly when they are girls and are cute. 3) If my horse dies during the adventure, can I buy a new one with overcap? I would say no. It is not a spell you are using up and all material stuff dissapears in the end. 4) If my PC dies in the adventure, can I pay for a reincarnate with overcap? I would say yes as in the example above. A spell is cast the the material component is used up. The effects are long lasting once a spell is cast. :) Thanks |

Mike http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=lg/lggt/20040615a Mike beat me to it, but the short answers to you questions: 1) No 2) No (fuzzy though) 3) No 4) Yes Over cap money cannot be used to add an item that it taken beyond the mod...That is what is definitely happening in 1 & 3. You use the scroll or the horse dies, it is immediately removed from the character. And the end of the mod, you buy another scroll or another horse, and it is added to your character. That item cannot come from over-cap... Spell components are a bit fuzzier, since you don't actually keep records of them, however, since the way LG treats it being "if you have the money you have the item", I would consider it to be "an item" for purposes of the "can't take an item from the table rule"...Plus, you technically spend the material cash the moment you cast the spell...You gold total drop at that moment, and then is added to at the end, and the amount at the end obviously can't be overcap, thus another way to arrive at "no" for spell components... |

It's actually not that hard if you think along the 'right' kind of lines. To offset this I will describe it obliquely and in a muddled fashion. ;) Consider that all items found during the adventure belong to 'the party treasure' and not to individuals. Such things can include magical and mundane items, coins, and consumables.. whatever. It's not until the *end* of the module when whatever is left over is all converted into cash and subsequently divided equally amongst the players. It's during that division that the hard cap of how much can be gained is applied. So if you find a potion during a module and consume it before the end of the mod it is removed from the list of things to sell at the end. Likewise if you take some of the *cash* found (or sell some of the items found) and spend *that* cash on a potion then that potion becomes 'party treasure'. If such an item is around at the end of the module it is converted back into cash and proceeds divided equally. In essence, assuming you will find more in items and coins than you will be allowed to keep once you divide it you have some latitude. You can sell items at the end of the module and pay for NPC casting with that cash *before* it's divided amongst the players. Likewise you could use some of that cash up *during* the module and there would simply be less party treasure to divide at the end. Is that overcappable?) 3) If my horse dies during the adventure, can I buy a new one with overcap? 4) If my PC dies in the adventure, can I pay for a reincarnate with overcap? Thanks 1) No, because you would be buying those scrolls for the party treasure. It would then have to be converted back into gold to be divided. Now what you *could* do is wait until the party has some funds (ie gotten coins in the module) and purchase things with *that* cash. The items would belong to the party as a whole and if they made it through the mod would be converted back into cash to be divided. 2) Buy back, no. Prebuy yes. Considering that costly components come directly out of coins (for convienence) in LG, there's no reason it could not come from the party treasure (assuming there were sufficient coins already found) rather than your own should the party agree to it (just like the party agreeing to purchase scrolls with party cash). 3) No, you can't purchase and keep anything with party funds. Now you could have 'rented' a horse after finding some cash from the first encounter. Sell/use what you find there to purchase a horse for the 'party treasure' but then it would get sold at the end of the mod. 4) Sure, assuming the party agrees to so dispose of treasure. They can also spend thier own money as well should they be willing. -James |
