I am looking for pre-painted miniatures outside of the wotc D&D miniatures in order to have some more variety. If anyone knows of some good place(s) to get painted minis please PM me.

I'd keep eye on e-bay or CoolMiniOrNot. Pro-painted miniatures generally won't be cheap but, they are available.

Try Reaper Miniatures, or some Games Workshop ones. You can usually find some painted ones online.

I usually prefer to paint em meself though...

Reaper ones are particularly good for DnD.

I wish I had a steady enough hand to paint them myself.

I can understand not wanting to paint them yourself. I used to do it myself but, have found that I prefer to pay someone else. I will say this though. Alot of current figure lines are so well modelled that a good color wash/drybush technique paints them pretty well without a great deal of fine motor control.

I'd suggest:
Games Workshop
Reaper (especially the Warlord line)
Confrontation
Foundry
Hasslefree

Gestalt Lab will paint stuff for you.

E-mail the guy who runs it, Brian, and ask him about what you want. He's got a pretty good idea of both LG and what's available, so "I'd like a knight of Heironeous, from the Shield Lands" is a reasonable request.

I had him paint the "Queen of the High Elves" Reaper mini for me (it is used for my Living Death dilletante, my Living Arcanis psion and my Blackmoor noble characters) and it has received a number of compliments.

If you travel to cons at all, sign up for the Reaper Paint and Take if it's available. In my experience (at Origins and at local cons in Michigan), the staff is very patient with a newbie and will help you with some of the more difficult (and easier) aspects of painting. I got two of my PCs' minis painted that way.

The only risk is that there are only 4-5 minis available at a Paint and Take, so you many not get the mini you need for your PC. Then again, if you write, all it takes is seeing a nice mini you can buy and paint for three bucks to give you ideas...

eM-4 also makes a line of pre-painted lead figures. I see them around fairly often and have bought a set of samurai figs that were pretyy well done. If you like what they have, I believe they go for like 20-25$ for a 4 figure set.

The Reaper demo stuff is excellent. They had a booth at Megacon (although for some reason they had almost entirely "drunken pirate" minis). It's a good way to experiment without having to spend any money on the minis yourself.
Like most art, though, it's all about practice. I didn't reach what I'd consider "table quality" until about 6 minis, and it took several more before I reached a point where the mini would stand up to close examination without causing me to wince. :P

I don't have what I'd consider a super-steady hand, but I can even do the eyes now. It's all about practice, and painting minis that you don't care about to build up the basic skills to paint the ones you do.

On the other hand, sometimes there's no substitute for just hiring someone to take care of the problem for you. :D

ARRRgh. painting minis for a certain other mini based game set in the 41st millenium can get tedious. I just want to finish up so i can play!

For Dnd, Reaper minis rock. I currently have 3 tho. 2 of which I've never played as which annoys me. The other is my lvl 7 wizard from a homebrew.

You can also hunt the bargain bins at conventions for "practice" minis. Particularly on the last day of a con, there will often be boxes of minis at a significant discount. Last Dragon*Con I picked up some old Mage Knight golems I used to play around with "pinning" and gap filling.

I can do some work for people who don't want to paint their figures. I do a lot of that for people over on boardgamegeek.

I have ALL my miniature painting done at Blue Table Painting in Spanish Fork, Utah. Shawn and the gang there are FAST, do EXCELLENT work, have amazing customer service and reasonable prices.

p.s. if you look in the online gallery under RPG Heroes you can see some of the work he has done for me. That is another plus to BTP, they have a HUGE online gallery of work they have done.

p.p.s. I used to do all my own painting but my brother left my tool box of paints, brushes, miniatures, etc on top of a friend's car once and it fell off and was then crushed by a large truck. I haven't had the heart to rebuild since :weep:
