Can medium-sized Paladins choose wardogs as their "mount"? I'm thinking about starting up a dark brooding batman-style paladin who summons a snarling wardog and sicks it on miscreants and thieves.

An animal has to be at least one size category larger than the rider for it to be a suitable mount (DMG, p. 204).

And, in the LGCS, it specifically says that "small paladins may choose a riding dog instead of the standard warpony." It gives no mention of medium-sized paladins being given any options beyond the standard heavy warhorse.

The paladin's mount is really intended to be a mount, not an animal companion (which is sort of how it sounds like you want to use it).

So, looks like no dog for you. :(

That's what I suspected. Seems odd that you're specifically restricted from handicapping yourself. Thanks for the response.

Yeah, well, I'm sure some powergamer would figure out a way to exploit such a loophole. :)

At any rate, it's a fun concept, and I probably wouldn't have a big issue with it if you proposed it in a home game that I was running...but LG just isn't known for that kind of flexibility.

You can always bring it up with your triad. Sometimes they like a little originallity and could give you campaign documentation for the wardog.

I find it annoying that a small Paladin can't have a normal warhorse, even though a small creature is perfectly capable of riding one...They're forced into either a wardog or warpony, which are less capable in combat than a warhorse...

Well theres that and the -4 ride check for being a small rider in a large creature so they figured to add insult to insult with that little extra bit.....

Halflings seem to get the dirty end of the stick but thats my math in LG. Your campagn may differ. :P

 Where is that mentioned, because it's not in the PHB...
