I recently gained access to a Pearl of the Sirens and was looking over the item and noticed that it granted a Swim speed of 60 ft. Is this swim speed 60 ft. no matter what or is it affected by armor and encumberance?

Thanks for the info.

IMO, it would still be affected by encumbrance, armor, etc. There's nothing in the MM description (page 312) of having a 'Swim' speed that suggests otherwise:A creature with a swim speed can move through water at its swim speed without making Swim checks. It has a +8 racial bonus on any Swim check to perform some special action or avoid a hazard. The creature can always can choose to take 10 on a Swim check, even if distracted or endangered. The creature can use the run action while swimming, provided it swims in a straight line.Though not a core source, this also seems to be supported in a couple of places in Stormwrack (e.g., see the sidebar on page 90, "Swim Speeds and Heavy Loads").

Generally, you're not going to want to be doing much underwater work if your armor has a high ACP, regardless of whether you can actually swim or not. ;)

The high opportunity cost for my PCs to hold the pearl in their hand always persuades me not to worry about such trivial matters like this when deciding whether or not to buy one.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by this statement but if you're talking about the 15,300 price tag, I can and probably will craft this item just so my cleric in fullplate doesn't drown on the Nyr Dyv. Since I'm in the Shield Lands and Iuz Meta-region the likelihood of me being in water is VERY likely.

If it is clasped firmly in hand or held to the breast while the possessor attempts actions related to the pearl's power...

Nothing in the description makes me think you can activate it as a standard action and then put it away. (I was surprised when this was pointed out to me!) So, does your cleric want to give up a weapon and/or shield so that he can use the pearl and cast spells? My PC opted for a ring of floating instead and tends to prepare water breathing and freedom of movement if around large bodies of water.

Ah, thats why I have a Ring of Force Shield and Pelor help the table if my cleric actually has to swing his Holy Water Sprinkler.
