| Puggle Halfwine06-11-07, 05:10 AM | Hey guys, I had a thought while I was Senior GM/RPGA organizer for a large local convention and massively sleep deprived... If we could arrange to rent, beg, borrow or otherwise occupy a room at the local British embassy, could we play regional/metaregional modules from that region (Onwall)? If we played in a United States embassy, could we play Geoff modules? Cheers, Dave. |
| Kithran06-11-07, 06:46 AM | For LG it doesn't matter if you are in an Embassy it still counts as being within the country the embassy is located in - in this case all you would be able to play would be Perrenland or Ratik modules depending on exactly where the embassy was. Kithran Onnwal POC |
| Bogjob06-11-07, 08:33 AM | Kithran's right, I think I saw a thread on this before or something in the LGCS/RPGA site covering it before. It's a definate no no unfortunately. |
| Puggle Halfwine06-11-07, 08:50 AM | Sadface. |
| Mommy was an Orc06-11-07, 09:12 AM | Sadface. Of course, if you visited any nearby country that isn't part of a specific region and had a DM from Geoff, you can play Geoff mods. I've been jokingly saying to friends we should have a convention in the Bahamas. |
| Gwumph06-11-07, 10:04 AM | oh come on puggle!! you got fiji, New Guine, Indonesia and if you give me enough warning, here in Thailand there is a smorgasboard of choice... i believe you can fly Jetstar to ****et for something like 100$.:D |
| Gwumph06-11-07, 10:05 AM | LOL...... the dirty language program did not like the word p..h..u..k..e..t to funny |
| thorinXXX06-11-07, 11:39 AM | LOL...... the dirty language program did not like the word p..h..u..k..e..t to funny Considering all of the dirty things that go on in that place I am not surprised.:D Ahh, the memories. |

| Fakegoatee06-11-07, 08:19 PM | For LG it doesn't matter if you are in an Embassy it still counts as being within the country the embassy is located in - in this case all you would be able to play would be Perrenland or Ratik modules depending on exactly where the embassy was. Kithran Onnwal POC I could be wrong, but I always thought that embassies were considered to be the territory of the country they were embassies of, no the country they are embassies too. That is, I thought the Moldavian embassy to Australia was located on an embassy-sized patch of Moldavian territory completely surrounded by Australian territory. The embassy, in that case, is in Moldavia, not Australia. And if I'm right, games played in that embassy are being played in Moldavia. Am I wrong about international law or LG rules? (There is such a place as Moldavia, isn't there?) |
| Britt06-11-07, 08:29 PM | No, Moldavia is not a country (anymore). Despite that, what you are talking about is a standard of public international law and has no bearing on private agreements and definitely no binding nature against private organizations' rules. We could say that for RPGA purposes, any city with a population fewer than 10,000 is part of Guinea. We could recognize Taiwan as an independent country, no matter the current diplomatic relations between it and myriad countries. Basically, we can say whatever we want and we've said that all land within a country is considered part of that country. Edit: Oops, sorry, Moldova is a currently existing country that contains part of the region historically known as Moldavia. Just thought I'd be precise, as I learned a bit while researching it, instead of what I should have been researching :) |
| Fakegoatee06-11-07, 10:01 PM | I stand corrected. The Circle intends for games played at any embassy to Australia to be considered games "in" Australia. A related question, though: If the Pope wants to play a regional home game at the Vatican, does he play a Geoff regional or a Sea Barons regional? Is Vatican City "in" Italy (and so Sea Barons), or is it unassigned, and so Geoff? (Forgive me if we don't really NEED an answer to that question. I'm just curious.) |
| Britt06-11-07, 10:12 PM | Honestly, if we could get the Pope to play LG, we'd probably let him run whatever mod he wanted. I mean, can you imagine the publicity coup for LG specifically and D&D in general if that happened? If someone else wanted to play in Vatican City, though, since it's its own country, it would be Geoff, not the non-existent Sea Barons... Aren't there one or two other instances of sovereign nations completely contained within other countries? Basically, in such cases, the area in question actually is that country, not a legal fiction. |
| _metz_06-11-07, 11:49 PM | There is the Hutt River Province. Hutt River is an Independent Sovereign State having seceded from Australia on the Twenty First Day of April 1970 and is of comparable size to Hong Kong (not the New Territories). It is perhaps of interest to note, that Western Australia was actually never proclaimed by Captain Stirling as British Territory, as was required of him under his Letter Patent. He only Proclaimed a Settlement (the Swan Settlement) in Western Australia. The Territory of The Principality of Hutt River was never, ever, British Proclaimed Territory! How about that for Geoff Modules Britt? :P |
| Britt06-12-07, 12:01 AM | Interesting, but it looks like no country has ever recognized the HRP as a country. The best they have is Australia not challenging their claim, which isn't really enough to constitute really being a country, imo. I think the Circle position would likely be that the HRP is considered part of Australia for regional purposes :) Interesting data though. Thanks. |
| _metz_06-12-07, 12:12 AM | Yeah it has not been recognised by any other nation, I just thought it was a funny little oddity :) |
| just_be_glad_now06-12-07, 12:57 AM | Everywhere but QLD, you would possibly be able to take a boat out 12 nm? (QLD runs into trouble due to Reef, Aus territory extends a looong ways there) Britt should probably make a ruling on the international waters case, as unlike some of the others in this thread, it might actually be an issue... Brayden |
| Britt06-12-07, 01:08 AM | We've already talked about international waters, internally. Basically, international waters are going to be considered Geoff, while national waters are going to be part of their respective regions. I honestly don't know if we're going with the 12, 24, or EEZ 200 nautical mile limits, as I had forgotten about that the last time we talked about this (my international environmental law prof would be so ashamed). It will likely be the 12 or 24 mile limits, and I hope to god noone tries to ask me what to do about the special cases where national waters are more limited, like in straights between two countries. |
| _metz_06-12-07, 01:11 AM | Meh, you would probably have to restrict the nation's region to its fishing zone (200 Nautical miles) Now that would be odd, taking the boat out to international waters for the express purpose of playing DnD.... |

Aren't there one or two other instances of sovereign nations completely contained within other countries? Basically, in such cases, the area in question actually is that country, not a legal fiction. there is San Marion, in Italy as well :) other funny cases are: Principality of Lichtenstein, just a stretch of mountains cramped in between Switzerland and Austria, I don't know whether it is a part of Dullstrand or Adri/Innspa/Ahlissa. The same goes for Monaco - between France and Italy - and Andorra - between France and Spain. The Channel islands are part of Onnwal I suppose? as well as all the other islands around Britannia Major that have the Queen as their direct sovereign? What about Gibralta?, Onnwal or Lordship of the Isles? and there are those mall French islands lying just close to Canada. ciao martin m. |
| Britt06-12-07, 03:37 AM | I was talking about small countries that were completely enclosed within one country. The only difference between Lichtenstein and Poland is size, well, for this discussion. I'm pretty sure Lichtenstein is no region, or now Geoff. Those damnable islands have always been oddballs and have never been addressed. |

Those damnable islands have always been oddballs and have never been addressed. Well, if you know LG players in those regions let me know so that I can take it up with Chris Tulach. Right now Lichtenstein is actually surrounded by countries with a LG region, the same with Monaco and Andorra. My choice would be to assign Lichtenstein to Adri, Monaco to Ekbir, but I would need to do some research for Andorra (although from a players perspective active Ekbir would be a better idea). I don't know whether they speak Spannish, French or their own language and here in Europe using language as a guiding principal for assigning regions is not a particular bad idea (even though that can cause some problems with areas like Belgium and Switzerland). I know players in Luxumbourg requested to be switched from Sunndi to Ekbir based on language, even though when I asked for more details they never reacted anymore... |
| Gwumph06-12-07, 05:03 AM | LOL Britt What happens if you play while on the Spratly Islands..... Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam and China all claim ownership!! 2 of those countries belong to Perrenland, 2 are now in Geoff. Could it be the only place in the world where you could play mods from 2 different regions on the same parcel of land. :D :lightbulb ..........:plotting: |
| Britt06-12-07, 05:11 AM | I hate you, Gwumph ;) |
| pedr06-12-07, 06:27 AM | According to the letter of the LGCS, Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man and Gibraltar should probably all be in Geoff. They are in no way part of the UK - although the UK has responsibility for their foreign relations and defence, their relationship is with the British Crown directly, rather than with the nation state of the United Kingdom. I'm no legal historian, but this is potentially similar to the legal position of Canada pre-1982, had that territory required the British armed forces to provide for its defence. Now, as Britt says, LG can decide to include those states within the Onnwal region - but unless it does (and, I suppose, so long as the Geoff triad choose to recognise them) they are part of Geoff now. The LGCS does not say that they're part of Onnwal, and never has done. Similarly with the European micro-states: perhaps they should be assigned to their logical neighbours - on the other hand play of LG in those locations would be enhanced (from a probable zero base) if they were to stay in Geoff as people from other regions in Europe may well encourage local people to begin to play so that they can run Geoff modules. |

| draxynnic06-12-07, 08:32 AM | Definitely a cleric of Pholtus. Suddenly, I'm seeing that "What's New with Phil & Dixie" issue with a guy in high-ranking priestly robes shouting "Oh YEAH! If I roll a natural '20' on the Lusty Barmaid table, I want to enjoy it GUILT FREE!!!" |
| Gwumph06-12-07, 11:37 AM | Really Cause I am seeing next weeks headline for Fox News...... "Underground demonic cult seek to subvert the Vatican!" |

| GenghisBob06-13-07, 03:14 AM | Northfolk Island is a territory of australia that was not included in the Ratik/Perrenland Carve up. Bali is close by, as is Vanatu. The trick is you will need a DM from Geoff or one of these orphaned states now classed as Geoff. |

I wonder what the pope would wear as his T-shirt? I know what T-shirts i would send him out of my collection, but i wont post them here, as im sure they would causse issues... Look for them at SRDU ;) -then think how the pope would look in them ;) |
| _metz_06-13-07, 03:35 AM | I see the pope as an extremely rules based Senior GM. "And Verily, thou character is to be treated under article thirteen of the holy book of Vatican, I mean, LGCS law... And as the Canaanites argued for special dispensation, there was mercy granted upon them, and as such the charity of friends clause was enacted... and there was much rejoicing..." (That isn't really supposed to make sense btw for anyone out there who jumps in and corrects me) |
