| _metz_07-19-07, 03:43 AM | I have played: All regional intros bar 1. All Year 6 cores bar one APL 10 All Year 6 Regional Scenarios All but 2 Year 7 Regional Scenarios Still need: 2 Year 6 Meta Regional Scenarios Played: 2 year 7 Met Regional Scenarios 1 Adaptable. (Fane of the Drow) And half the year 6 cores/Regionals were played last year. and My two Primary PCs are on 6 and 10 TUs respectively. (One is level 9, other is level 7, started playing LG last year at the beginning) Due to the move back to Ratik I will attempt to level another character to 3 ASAP to take part in the influx of APL 4-6 starting games that are coming my way. |
| copper_wyrmling07-19-07, 04:22 AM | I've currently played (of the Year 6's and 7's): -Four of the seven Year 6 Bissel scenarios, none of the Year 7s. -Three of the seven Year 6 Sheldomar Valley scenarios, none of the Year 7s. -One Year 6 Keoland module -All four Year 6 Ratik scenarios, none of the Year 7s. -All three Year 6 NMR metaregionals, one Year 7. -Six of the nine Year 6 Perrenland scenarios, none of the Year 7s. -Five of the eight Year 6 Iuz metaregionals, none of the Year 7s. -All but one Year 6 Core (Dominion), five Year 7 Cores. -Adaptables: Red Hand of Doom, Fane of the Drow, Hellspike Prison, Frostfell Rifts Part 1 -Specials: Pits of Azak-Zil, Hanging Glacier, City of Brass I haven't played any interactives this year, but last year I played in four or five I think. When I left Australia in September last year, I'd played every Perrenland and Iuz game that was available at the time, all the Year 5 cores, and most of the Year 6 cores. Since then, I've played a wider variety of games, but I think I spend less time playing - the adaptables cost a lot of TUs but don't seem to take up a commensurate amount of play time, and all my favorite PCs now can't play 1-TU games any more (changing home region would get them booted out of their meta-orgs), so I run out of TUs quickly with the characters I like, and I'm not really interested in creating lots of new characters. EDIT: My currently active PCs are L15, L12, L10, L5 and a bunch of L1s. The L15 and L12 have home region Perrenland, the L10 has home region Bissel, the L5 has home region Bright Sands. |

| kenobi6507-19-07, 12:40 PM | Cores: I might get in half of them; I'm usually not in a big rush to get them all ASAP, nor am I a completist. Truth be told, what usually winds up happening is that, when other players in my area start setting up tables, I get dragged in a lot. :) Regionals: I do try to play all the Verbobonc regionals, and usually seem to get most of them in within a few months of release; attending a few local conventions helps with that. Metaregionals: I don't make a big point of playing the metaregionals; I may catch a few, via the same method I wind up playing Cores. Other regionals / metaregionals: I get in very few of these. Specials and adapteds: Might pick up the occasional one here and there. |
| Redfist07-19-07, 12:52 PM | I'm the type that tries to get in every mod possible. All cores. All ADPs. All regionals/metaregionals/intros for where I live. Plus I travel a fair amount. Maybe I have issues? :) |

| Howie2307-19-07, 01:52 PM | Sam, Both this and the other thread are, hopefully, geared at the idea of evaluating how story arcs should be structured to fit into playing/character management styles. To do that, it must be recognized that there are varied character management styles. These change by region as well as where a player is in their career in LG. Look at these two different players and the Bright Sands arc; others are welcome to add other profiles: 1) Mary Collectemall has been playing since year 1, and plays everything she can. She has multiple characters in the L10-15 range, several in the 6-8 range, and a slew of L2-3. Bright Sands came out, and required that she start a new L1 to play it all. Meanwhile, in her region, all of the intros in year 5 and six are the start of new story arcs, and she's told the new idea is that PCs start in their region, then goes to see the outside world. She dutifully makes a dedicated Bright sands character (Centaur: Think Of the Possibilities!) and starts to play the series. This is designed to play all with one PC, right? She's played everything to date as soon as it comes out, and has no backlog with which to be flexible about ramping a character up in level. The Bright Sands character takes Sandstorm Feats. It's ready to dance or crawl in the sand and endure the heat and lack of water. After all, this is an environmental series, right? Dominion comes out at APL6, and her dedicated Bright Sands character (has only played bright sands mods) has dutifully collected all 11 rounds prior. Squeeking in at 4th level, the player says to herself, "Glad I played everything to have made it to 4th level. I won't have to take half when I play at the premiere!" 2) Newton Newbie starts playing in Year 6 at a gameday offering a mod For New PCs Only!!!! He survives the dreaded Norkers and tries to understand why he can't keep the trident. He perseveres. He plays everything he can get his hands on, and his PC is 7th level at the end of year 6, with a number of mods left in reserve. He keeps playing the PC whenever he can, but starts another PC for the odd table. He's told this is is secondary character. Mid year-7, his primary has a few TUs left at 11th level. Just enough to to play Dominion at the upcoming gameday and complete the story Arc. Wait. Why do all the other players wanna play 4th-6th level PCs? Don't they have anything higher? Newton can't play lower than APL8, and barely that. These are just a pair of examples. I think that the Greyhawk Ruins series is doing a better job of setting expectations about how to structure PCs to play the full story arc. David |
| solbergb07-19-07, 02:05 PM | On a scale of none/some/most/all/more than all, how many of: >The usual set of adventures (20 core, 8 metaregional, 8 regional) do you expect to play during a typical year? All of them. My wife, most of them. >Your regions introductory adventures do you expect to play during a typical year? Most of them. We like them but sometimes miss one. >Outside regionals and metaregionals do you expect to play during a typical year? A few, the number equals roughly 8x the conventions I can travel to during a year. I don't travel if there aren't regionals/metaregionals to play. None for my wife >Bonus rounds (core specials and adaptables) do you expect to play during a year? Used to be 2 core specials and most of the adaptables. With expanded premiere gone, no core specials and most of the adaptables. My wife plays a few adaptables but not many. >On a scale of playtest/premiere/year of release/before retirement, when do >you expect to play the: Cores? Within about 6 months of release. Rarely at release. Metaregionals? Year of release, occasionally playtest Regionals? Year of release, occasionally playtest Introductories? Year of release, occasionally playtest Bonus rounds? Year of release, sometimes the next year. These are same for me and wife I think that's about 40 "rounds" of play for my wife and about 60 for me, split among 6 characters for her and 9 for me, with only ~15 "1 tu" rounds. We usually run two chars out of time units every year, but we also do the metaorg thing... |
| awroe07-19-07, 02:13 PM | I generally play all the Core, Meta-Regional and Regional modules that are available within my region (except the APL 10+ ones, for which I don't have a character suitable yet), and have yet to play an out of Region module. I've played a few of the Core Specials. Generally I play half the modules in the year they are released and half the year after. Of course, people actively participating in this forum are likely to be more regular players. |
| LGMoses07-19-07, 02:16 PM | have ran all apl 2 playable cores from year 6 not dealing with Bright Sands all year 6 yeomanry regional modules available to apl 2 players and all mods currently available both core and regional to apl 2 tables except for those not yet released and i htink one core mod. |
| Samwise07-19-07, 02:25 PM | Sam, Both this and the other thread are, hopefully, geared at the idea of evaluating how story arcs should be structured to fit into playing/character management styles. It is a combination of that, and trying to establish definitions, particularly in the other thread. It doesn't help to have someone say they expect to play a series with their secondary if they have a different definition of a secondary character than I do, or to note that 36 adventures are generally available every year (since I don't think anyone can always know how many bonus rounds will be available given the recent shifts with extended premieres and home play of core specials, as well as the return of adaptables but the subsequent cancellation of one of the product lines involved in producing them) if people don't expect to play all of them. And, although it has the most effect with new players, it does become relevant to know when people plan to play adventures. (Since it should be obvious that always playing premieres makes it a lot harder to plan on using the same PCs in multiple series, particularly if APL ranges are shifting.) So first it is geared at getting a database. Later that data can be used to discuss arc structuring. Oh, and just to be clear: I'm not looking for what people have played. I am looking for how much people expect to play as a general matter of course. And for me: I generally expect to play as many regionals, metaregionals, and adaptables as I qualify for by character level. That meant about 4 regionals and metaregionals in 2005, 8 and 6 in 2006, and probably 8 and 8 this year, along with 3 adaptables. I expect to play them in the year of release going forward, but I mostly played with a full year delay in 2005 and 2006. |
| kjenks07-19-07, 04:37 PM | I expect to play almost all of the Cores, Adapted, Regionals, Intros and Metaregionals that are accessible in my region (Bandit Kingdoms/Iuz). I usually play about half of them in the year that they come out and the other half the next year. I usually play all but one or two of these mods; I'll skip any mod that my buddies whine about excessively, usually an Iuz Meta (that's happened once per year for the past three years). I play a little more than half of the Cores on-line. I judge Cores on-line 2-3 times per year. (That number will probably increase as my kids get older.) I expect to play about half of the regionals and metaregionals from the nearest neighboring region (Yeomanry/Sheldomar) since I usually attend one or two game days or conventions per year over there. I expect to play a couple of Regionals from other places that I travel to (Verbobonc, Geoff and Nyrond, since I usually travel to Illinois, DC and California). I travel out of region 3-5 times per year, usually on business, sometimes on family vacation, and about once per year I can make a trip out of region for the sole purpose of playing LG. By the end any given year, I'll probably judge about half of the mods that are available in my local region. I almost never judge a mod while I'm out of region. | Sieylianna07-19-07, 05:28 PM | I expect to play all the regional, metaregional and intros available for my home region the year they come out. I play events in 3-4 other regions in a typical year and average about half the regional and meta-regional modules over the two year life span. I generally play about half the cores the year they come out and most of the remainder the following year. I play adaptables when I have a chance. It can be tough to put together suitable tables for higher APL's and large TU investments. Pretty much the only readily available modules that I rarely play are the ones that are minimum APL 10+. Not because I don't have a suitable PC, but because so many of the people I game with don't qualify. Ed |

| kjenks07-19-07, 07:03 PM | You should know that you're getting a very skewed sample here. Avid gamers hang out on the boards; casual gamers typically don't. |
| RedKnightofKet07-19-07, 08:15 PM | You should know that you're getting a very skewed sample here. Avid gamers hang out on the boards; casual gamers typically don't. Ken's absolutely right. In my gaming group, whom I pulled together for Red Hand, I am the only one who used his third-highest character, and two others used their second highest. They don't play nearly as much as I do, and (as far as I know), none of them are on the boards. |
| CdrcJsn07-19-07, 08:16 PM | You should know that you're getting a very skewed sample here. Avid gamers hang out on the boards; casual gamers typically don't. This is very true. At a local gamestore (Oakland Endgames), there is an RPGA night every Monday and usually gets upwards of 20 or so players. Perhaps only a third of them subscribe to the Pale yahoogroup, much less this board. Those types of players (as well as players that only play RPGA at non-RPGA exclusive cons) usually just play whatever is available and don't make a special effort to arrange tables to play everything. Cedric PS I usually try to play everything available locally and manage to do so. In the past, I've travelled out of region, but rarely get to play all those regional mods (though I usually manage to get in most). This year, even with not being able to play the regionals or metaregionals and not having travelled at all, it looks like I'm gonna run at least 2 characters out of TUs (maybe 3) thanks to the new adaptables. This is in addition to creating several new characters (ranging from 1st to 4th level). |
| Samwise07-19-07, 10:02 PM | You should know that you're getting a very skewed sample here. Avid gamers hang out on the boards; casual gamers typically don't. Yep. I know of that. Of course you can't really get a sample of casual gamers, so you guys will have to do. ;) There is of course an obvious corollary to that. |
| gomeztoo07-20-07, 03:17 AM | On a scale of playtest/premiere/year of release/before retirement, when do you expect to play the: I forgot his one (btw, my previous post were estimates on how much I play/year, not what I actually played this/last year). Cores?: before retirement Metaregionals/Regionals?: N.A. or before retirement out of region Introductories?: N.A. or before retirement out of region Bonus rounds? before retirement IOW: I simply hope to play them at some time or other... Barring visiting GenconUK, that is - I do plan to play premieres there. |

I am wondering if people play everything for their region, play it right away or wait, and such. I expect to play all Cores, but usually don't due to not having TUs with high-APL PCs (this will change next year). I try to play them as close to the release date as possible. I do not play local regionals or meta-regionals (Triad). Nearby regions: I expect to play all Verbobonc and Veluna regionals and VTF metaregionals, although not necessarily during the year of release. I expect to play all the bonus rounds, in slot zero for the Core Specials. I do not play introductory adventures (already have a glut of low-level PCs). |
| solbergb07-20-07, 11:46 AM | It's a skewed sample yes, but if your goal is to find out how fast characters level for setting story arc level ranges, if the avid gamers can't get enough games to level a lot, the casual gamers aren't going to either. |
| Samwise07-20-07, 12:15 PM | It's a skewed sample yes, but if your goal is to find out how fast characters level for setting story arc level ranges, if the avid gamers can't get enough games to level a lot, the casual gamers aren't going to either. I would expect that would be reflected by answers in the other thread. (Classifying characters as primary and what not.) This I would expect to present an overview of what the internet active (and thus typically most vocal) players expect in terms of play. There would be a severe disconnect if any feedback were considered in the context of "Most players only play every other weekend, and so only play about 26 of the 38 regular adventures available in a region every year." Obviously, no. So maybe the next time the LGCS review comes up someone can point to these two threads and say "While they may not reflect the majority of the players, the majority of people commenting on the LGCS play 40+ rounds per year, and have a minimum of 4 active PCs, and likely another 4 1st level PCs gathering dust until needed." Other things then follow from that. |
| solbergb07-20-07, 12:48 PM | Yeah. I applaud the exercise, both threads. Data is generally better than no data, and if it is used with the limitations of the measuring in mind it's almost always useful. A person without data is just a guy with opinions. They might be correct, but there isn't any way of proving that or disproving it. A person with data may be able to understand what's really going on and take positive action to change things for the better. Even if the hypothesis on the problem and the chosen solution turns out to be wrong when tried out, you're a lot more likely to do something positive than the guy who is just guessing based on anecdotes and his own eyewitness experiences. |
| Samwise07-20-07, 01:24 PM | Thank you. That is how I view it as well. Hopefully it will produce something useful. |
| Howie2307-20-07, 01:39 PM | A person without data is just a guy with opinions. They might be correct, but there isn't any way of proving that or disproving it. A CEO of a large corporation once sought the answer to the question, "What is 1 plus 1?" He brought in a number of his expert employees to get their opinion. The mathematician quickly responded, "Exactly 1 plus exactly 1 is exactly 1." The engineer considered, and replied, "Approximately 1 plus approximately 1 is approximately 2." The data analyst looked up at the ceiling before smiling and responding, "What do you want it to be?" David As any true geek knows, the answer is 10. |
| TetsujinOni07-20-07, 03:05 PM | "While they may not reflect the majority of the players, the majority of people commenting on the LGCS play 40+ rounds per year, and have a minimum of 4 active PCs, and likely another 4 1st level PCs gathering dust until needed." Other things then follow from that. Interestingly, the things which will be found by players with that much time investment will likely be the truly sticky points. The things which will be annoying six months after the LGCS is released (or the GRCS... soon? please?) are the ones that a player unfamiliar with LG will ask... and people will remember LGCS595/6/7 rules instead of the current (lack of) rules. |
