Question on a weapon upgrade for trip attacker [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-11-06, 05:13 AM Hey guys, I have a question for my girlfriends char, that i am not sure how to answer. She plays a trip fighter, and is exploring the options of putting fire and shock on her spiked chain. The question is, in the first part of the trip you have to succeed on a touch attck. Does the fire and shock damage the opponent when the touch is made, and then if the trip is successful she gets the free attack (imp trip), if she hits on that attack would they damage again. I guess all i am wanting to know is when she succeeds on the touch attack do the fire and shock deal damage? Because there is always the possibility of the miss on the attack once the opponent is tripped, or even the opponent winning the opposed str check. Yall have always helped in the past and any queries on this are appriciated

07-11-06, 08:33 AM Those abilities allow you to do extra damage - you don't do damage with a trip attack, therefore you don't get to do extra damage with it.

You do get the bonus when you swing at them after they're down, though.

Suggest to her to take the combat reflexes and Improved trip Feat.
I should Know my fighter/Barbarian is a Trip fighter

07-15-06, 03:41 AM she has those. she is curently 5th level, 1 marshall (art of war aura), 4 fighter.
We were just concerned because in the rules for flame for instance, it says it damages on any successful atack. For a trip attempt you must forst succeed on a touch attack so thats why we were wondering

07-15-06, 09:46 AM Yah, as MommyWasAnOrc said, it has gotta be an attack type that deals damage.

Otherwise rogues would be dealing sneak attack damage with trip touch-attacks all day long. There's also other precedents for not dealing bonus damage on attack rolls that don't deal damage (ray attacks for penalties rather than damage come to mind).
