Ioun stones are those nifty dohickeys that swirl around your head granting you various bonus'. They have a decent armor class, some hardness and only a few hit points. What happens if you are, for example, struck by a fireball for 40 damage. This beats it past the hardness of the ioun stone and kicks the heck out of its hit points, but does it actually take any damage (barring a natural 1 on the save)?

Even though it's floating around you, it still counts as an attended object (much like your cloak, armor, headband, etc). That means items don't get damaged unless a special ability or effect specificaly says otherwise or if you roll a natural 1 on a save (and even then, only one of your items get fried).
