I have a few problems that came out recently that I need taken care of.

The first one is a problem with the Bright Sands series. I had played the very first one a few months ago. I'm talking about the one everyone plays at APL 2 and can make centaures from. Someone, someone told me that you can play that mod with anyone, not just a beginning character. I was a little sceptical about that, but I played it. Now I'm told I could have only played that as my first AR for a new character. What do I do?

Secondly, I have a sword of spell storing. I cast a high level Searing Light into the sword. When we used it to hit, I started to roll the dice, but was then told that I couldn't roll my maximum (10d6 for undead). I was told that when a spell storing item gets a spell cast into it, it is ALWAYS at the lowest level that can be cast into it, much like how wands and scrolls are created. Is this true? Also, does this also mean I can't add meta-magic feats into it? I know spell storing says the max level of the spell is 3rd, but I have divine meta-magic. Couldn't I just use that, as it never actually becomes a spell slot larger then what it originally is?

Err... I think you better email the RPGA guys about it and ask how to resolve this. the GM Should have pointed this out to your all when running the game.

1) The spell that is stored IS the level at which you casted it at, meaning that if you are level 10, you do 10d6 with that searing light against undead, not 3d6.

2) You can't meta-magic the spell if it beings the level of the spell past 3rd. It doesn't matter what level the spell is for you (due to feats that reduce the level cost or Divinbe Metamagic), , what does matter is the resultant effective spell level of the spell. This means that you can put in an extended Prayer spell, but not a Maximised Searing Light spell.

Although it's a core series you really need someone to come to some decision and issue you with some sort of paperwork to sort it out. Most likely the best solution is to void that AR somehow, removing the XP and GP gained/lost, removing any particular access you got, or things you acquired using any favours and so on. But only your triad can really help. This is unlikely to be something the circle will want to get involved with, at least generally.

More generally it's a cautionary tale to do your own checking about what you're playing. If I might recommend http://www.tassek.anang.com/blurbs.html as a source of well maintained information on all core modules (and Onnwal and Splintered Suns ones but I guess that's probably less useful!)

Spell storing rings and vibrant purple ioun stones store spells at the minimum level needed to cast that spell. Spell storing weapon, however, have no such limitation. However, you can't cast Searing Light into a spell storing weapon because it is an effect spell, not a targetted spell.

With some exceptions, every spell falls into one of the three categories: area, effect or target. Miracle, Wish and Limited Wish fall into all three since they can replicate spells that are in one of the three categories. A few spells, such as dispel magic, can be cast as a targetted spell or an area spell, usage determines what kind it is. There are some other odd combinations, such as mislead which targets the caster with invisibility and creates an effect which is an illusion of the caster.

Searing Light, Scorching Ray and pretty much any 'good' spell is 'nerfed' by this. If you look at the example spells for spell storing, they are all target spells.

There is another highly popular school of thought that believes that spells such as Searing Light should work in spell storing, probably because the majority of target spells are for buffing. This group feels that any spell that somehow targets an individiual should qualify for spell storing. For example, since scorching ray mentions target in its description, it should work with spell storing.

If you want to avoid the limitation of spell storing weapons, there are some PrCs that may allow you to cast any spell into a weapon in a similar fashion, for example, Spellsword.

Secondly, I have a sword of spell storing. I cast a high level Searing Light into the sword.

Instead of Searing Light, use Deific Vengeance. It's only a second level spell, so it's somewhat less powerful, but surprisingly close. Bestow Curse, Blindness/Deafness, Dispel Magic and Curse of Ill Fortune are some other possibilities. There are some limited spells that would also work very well.

If you are of a neutral alignment the Cause Critical is a good spell to use on almost everything but undead.
