Do levels from Druid and Ranger stack for the purposes of Animal Companions? Or if you have levels in both classes do you receive two Animal Companions?

Your effective Druid level for Ranger stacks with your real Druid level. So a Ranger 4/Druid 5 would have the animal companion of a 6th level Druid.

Huh, why wouldn't the example above result in an animal companion of a 7th level Druid? Isn't the Ranger level halved, for an effective level of 2? Which added to the Druid level makes 7?

Thanks for the response. And where did you find that the levels stack? The PHB says turning undead stacks, familiars stack, and uncanny dodge stack, but I didn't see anything about animal companions.

You're right about effective level being half Ranger level, so a 4th level Ranger is a 2nd Level Druid for the table...

As for stacking, I personally thought it happened, but I can't find anything that says it does (not even in the FAQ)...The only thing that I can find is on PHB p. 48 it says "This ability functions like the druid ability of the same name", but that only suggests that...

There is nothing explicit (at least that I could find) that says "ranger and druid levels stack" for uses of this ability...And explicit is important, since the PHB usually states when levels in multiple classes stack for an ability (e.g., uncanny dodge)...

Here it is right off of the SRD.

Class Level: The character’s druid level. The druid’s class levels stack with levels of any other classes that are entitled to an animal companion for the purpose of determining the companion’s abilities and the alternative lists available to the character.

Darn it...PHB p. 36, in the section on the Druid's animal companion...Like I said, I thought it worked that way :D
