| RedKnightofKet10-25-06, 12:18 PM | For those of you who haven't noticed yet, Red Hand of Doom is now available. And see as how the other RHoD thread is getting very difficult to navigate, I figured I might as well start up a new thread - for those who are ordering it - thoughts? good stuff? bad stuff? Potentially troublesome stuff? |

And see as how the other RHoD thread is getting very difficult to navigate, I figured I might as well start up a new thread - for those who are ordering it - thoughts? good stuff? bad stuff? Potentially troublesome stuff? I've been running this for a non-RPGA group for the past month or so. In general, I'd say that the adaptation is pretty light-handed...that's a good thing, as the published mod is excellent. There are a few thoughtful adjustments that have been made for the LG campaign as a whole, largely associated with to get stuff to the AR system and for campaign consistency. My first impression is that Stephen Conforti did an excellent job in the adaptation design and implementation. A couple of heads ups: The mod includes non-core material. The statblocks are usually sufficient to adjudicate at the table when this happens, but also include references to those books (Completes, etc.) The adaptation doesn't have all of this content spelled out in an appendix. If you like to have access to everything, you'll need quite a few non-core books available. The mod includes material that is specifically restricted in LG. The adaptation does not remove this. I'll be making an inquiry as to how to handle that. The recommendation, of course, is to play everything through with the same party and without intervening mods. Beyond just recommendation, it is prohibited to play an earlier portion after a later portion. If you jump in to play part two, you can't play part one thereafter. If you play anything inbetween, you are ineligible to borrow TUs from year 8 for the last portion. You must have a PC who has played the part in the party to continue play. If a group wanted to start at part two, for example, they'd have to have at least one PC who had played part one. A TPK will break up a group of players in order to finish, for example...you'd have to import a PC who had continuity. The challenge will be getting a group to play it all the way through quickly in order to get enough judges for second and third generation runs through it. I just bit the bullet and burned it, as I didn't have a PC I wanted to dedicate to it. I expect other groups will need to do something similar. David |

Adaptations will occasionally include material we normally restrict in LG. If we don't explicitly remove them in the adaptation, then use them as they appear, despite their restricted status in the LGCS. |
| JJeff10-25-06, 08:47 PM | I have not run an adapted before. Mostly Regionals and Cores. And I have the book and have read through it. So, I have a question: When I order RHoD, how long do I have to report it? If I order it for, say, a retail game today (assuming I asked for it two weeks ago). I can't possibly finish the game in a day and report it. Do I slowly finish the game and report it when I do finish? Or must I run an 8-day gaming marathon and finish it within the 8 days given for the reporting? 51 TU adventures aren't easy to run, you know. |

Much appreciated and thanks for a great job on this. David |

In this case, the module is broken up into 5 parts each with their own AR's. I would think you order, run and report each one separately. I could be wrong as I am waiting to play this one when our designated DM returns from an overseas trip. Oh and I think it is only available for home play, againn I could be wrong. |
| Howie2310-25-06, 10:18 PM | In this case, the module is broken up into 5 parts each with their own AR's. I would think you order, run and report each one separately. I could be wrong as I am waiting to play this one when our designated DM returns from an overseas trip. It orders as a single package with all five ARs. We'll need some direction on this, as obviously it isn't going to run within normal time limits. In addition, the rules for it are set up such that a player could play one part with one DM and the next part with someone else. I think the most straightforward setup will be that a player can "play" it multiple times, much like an interactive or intro. Not sure I really see a way around that. Oh and I think it is only available for home play, againn I could be wrong. Home and Retail. David |
| Marcia_S10-26-06, 01:23 AM | I'm planning on running this locally (eating it) and notice that there is only one mod for it. How do you report all 5 parts? I figure it will take months to get it all run, so there's no way I can wait that long to report it and it doesn't seem right that a 51 TU mod is only worth 4 rewards points. Can you report it multiple times for the same players? Thanks, Marcia |
| JJeff10-26-06, 02:16 AM | Any chance we can get an offical word on the reporting time? Anyone d/l-ed the ADP6-03 and can tell us what the instructions with regards to the reporting are (if said so in the package) |
| chesspiece10-26-06, 08:28 AM | I didn't see anything in the package regarding special reporting. What happens if I run a group of 6 through chapter 1 and then another DM runs 2 of my PCs (along with 4 others) through chapter 2? Seems to me that they'll either need to add 4 more ADP6-3's to the system (report each chapter separately) or they'll need to allow Players reported multiple times under the existing ADP6-3. But really, all we care about is the Reward Points! I mean, seriously. 4 points for the whole module? Give me a break! Ya gots ta satisfy my RPGA R.P. jonesin'!!! [kidding] ;) - Steve |
| RedKnightofKet10-26-06, 09:42 AM | My local gaming group has yet to decide who's eating the module, and it being only 4 points will have an impact on that debate - if each section is reported separately (4 x 5), at least the guy who eats it gets a reward out of it. |
| pedr10-26-06, 09:54 AM | I wondered this as well. Perhaps we'll get an answer either here or elsewhere. The most sensible solution would probably be to split it into five scenarios, as they did for Well of Woe, the three-part Xen'drik adventure. |
| JJeff10-26-06, 11:51 AM | I'll wait for the answer before ordering. Since i'm the one eating this for my group, I want my money's worth. |
| SgtHulka10-26-06, 11:50 PM | Judges are being pretty darned altruistic when it comes to this mod. I can't imagine many Judges would be able to run it without eating it. So I hope the RPGA gives out at least double normal reward points as a "thank you". |
| Haro10-27-06, 12:33 AM | Judges are being pretty darned altruistic when it comes to this mod. I can't imagine many Judges would be able to run it without eating it. So I hope the RPGA gives out at least double normal reward points as a "thank you". Funnily enough, there are a couple of judges around my end of town that bought and read it when it first came out so they're (somewhat) happy to eat it. Can't blame the Circle for that though, I think it's bloody fantastic it's been made available for LG...good stuff. To be honest, it would just about be a DM's dream to run such an epic LG mod with the same party. It's not just this week's installment of 'so you find yourself in city X when all of a sudden...' Can't wait to play it. Joe |
| GenghisBob10-27-06, 03:54 AM | Yeah. it kind of brings home game - campaigin continuity to one party for a year of adventuring - if they so wish. |
| chesspiece10-27-06, 11:13 AM | I planned to eat it as soon as it was announced. We've got a small local group so somebody had to. I'd really like to have a board / site where LG-Judges for RHoD can share ideas, tips, play aids, errata, etc. There are already a lot of resources out there for this module and it would be nice if there was a place (password protected maybe) that would prevent "accidental" access by Players. I don't have the skillz, so I tried asking at Y! lgdms but no response in the last 2 days. Maybe we'd be able to get Circle members to pop by & answer key questions and prevent them from getting asked repeatedly? Anyone here have suggestions? Plan B would be to start a thread here on the Wizards boards, but then it would be open access. Cheers, Stephen Martin |
| JJeff10-27-06, 09:06 PM | There is a section of the boards that has many RHoD threads on it already, created by those that have run/are running RHoD as non-sanctioned home games. it's here (http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=26) It IS open access, though, but it has been up for a while. |
| chesspiece11-06-06, 10:05 AM | A site has been created for Judges to share information & discuss this module. http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/RPGA-RHoD The site already includes: FAQ, (unofficial) Errata, Maps, and Links. Much thanks to David Howard for creation & moderating. |
| Spektral11-22-06, 07:12 PM | Man, our group has been stagnating for the last year or so, these options make for a really interesting option to the normal mods, so that players that might be able to play 3-4 times a year can keep up with the other players that play more often or online. I also not only ate it, but bought it as well :D:D :D |
| Evanta11-23-06, 02:23 AM | tot I heard from somewhere the whole adventure was worth 20reward pts? |
| JJeff11-23-06, 04:22 AM | You heard correctly, WH. It is worth a total of 20 reward points. 4 points per chapter. |
| Takei11-25-06, 09:46 AM | Has anyone here actually played/run the whole thing? Looking at the TUs I'm guessing it'll take about 100 hours of play to finish (based on approx. 4 hours for a 2 TU Core). |
| Maesto12-02-06, 10:30 AM | Hi all, I can't remember if I've seen this somewhere else, but is it necessary to play all 5 parts contiguously? ie, can I play part 2, then part 1? What about with a different character? Cheers, Jolyon |
| RedKnightofKet12-02-06, 10:54 AM | Yes, I believe all of the parts must be played in order. I can't think of where it says that, but I'm 99.9% sure it does somewhere. |
| Marcia_S12-02-06, 11:24 AM | From what I have seen, you cannot go BACKWARDS in the storyline (as either character or player), but I do not believe that you have to play them non-stop, although it would make more sense to. With the large number of TUs required, it will be hard to play anything else between chapters and still have enough TUs to finish it. I would imagine that you could switch characters, e.g. if your character died or ran out of TUs (due to capture or something). I do not know if you can voluntarily switch characters. Also, I saw a post that said you should not play in a chapter, then run it before playing the entire series, as there are spoilers for future chapters included in the story background which you need to read to run the mod. Another question. My only character in the mid-level range is 7th level (centaur 6/cleric 1). Is that too high to play in Red Hand? My next highest is 3rd level, which is WAY too low for the series. Marcia |

With the large number of TUs required, it will be hard to play anything else between chapters and still have enough TUs to finish it. My understanding (and I could be mistaken) is that if you use the "borrow 2008 TUs to play RHoD in 2007" option, then you *cannot* play any other adventures in between chapters of RHoD. If you're not borrowing 2008 TUs (most likely, if you're managing to play at least one chapter in 2006), then, in theory, you *could* play something in-between, though, from a story standpoint, it may not make much sense. |
| Howie2312-03-06, 01:07 AM | I can't remember if I've seen this somewhere else, but is it necessary to play all 5 parts contiguously? ie, can I play part 2, then part 1? What about with a different character? The mod is best experienced by playing the same character all the way through, without anyway in between, but this is not required. What is required is: 1) You must play the parts in order. You may not play part one if you have played part two. If you play part one, then part four, you could never play parts two and three. 2) If you use the borrow TU option from 2008, you must play all of the parts in year 7, and may not play anything else inbetween. 3) There is no option to borrow 2007 TUs to play in 2006. The 2008 TU rule is an exception, otherwise, all parts are like all other LG mods: you must have the TUs available to play the entire mod when you start it, for the year in which you play it. 4) Once you judge any of it, you cannot play any of it. Judge propagation may be problematic. Total play time should run roughly 100 hours if run at normal play pace. As to character level: The mod is recommended to start with characters mid-way through 5th level. Level 4 charcters should be extremely effective, and are not recommended. Otherwise, all of the rules for APL follow for each part. Parts one and two are APL6, Part three is APL7 (yes, 7), Part four is APL8, and Part 5 is APL9 (yes, 9). So, from a rules perspective, a character can play part one with a 9th level character; or even a table of six 9th level characters, each at 1/2 XP and 1/2 GP. The challege aspect would be missing, of course. David Moderator RPGA-RHoD (unofficial RHoD group for judges only) |
| deadmmilkman12-04-06, 03:27 PM | Out of curiosity, what is the TU cost for each of the give parts? |
| kenobi6512-04-06, 03:35 PM | Out of curiosity, what is the TU cost for each of the give parts? Based on a post on the Verbobonc web site (someone with the actual ADP pack, feel free to correct me on this): Part 1: 8 TU Part 2: 12 TU Part 3: 9 TU Part 4: 6 TU Part 5: 16 TU |
| deadmmilkman12-04-06, 03:45 PM | Cool. Thanks! |
| rockondon12-23-06, 04:17 PM | So if I spend 6 (arbitrary number) TUs crafting items, but play nothing else in between the modules, can I still borrow TUs from 2008 to finish RHoD? |
