| Kilbia01-21-07, 06:20 PM | I'll use the specific example since it's not a spoiler or anything: Oliver, the human 4th-level cleric/2nd-level ranger, got killed and was reincarnated into a deep gnome. Right now he's a clr3/rgr2, so there isn't yet XP penalty to worry about. But when he gets his 6th level back, this is a concern for him. Does he get to keep his favored class of "any" since all his other mental stats would be unaffected, he wouldn't lose his bonus feat or extra skill points expended up until now, and he certainly wouldn't have felt any social pressure from the gnomes before now (social pressure seeming to explain half-orcs favoring barbarian and dwarves favoring fighter)? Or does he need to abide by the gnome's favored class of "bard" because favored class is more of a matter of what comes inherently easily to those races (as was formerly evidenced by gnomes favoring illusionist)? This is actually a really big deal for him, because he's getting ready to play Red Hand of Doom and can't afford to just take the XP penalty and continue the progression he wanted with this character. |
| Japangirl01-21-07, 06:53 PM | Based on the text of the spell, I don't think your favored class changes. After all, you remember your previous life and the adaptability that is a (mental) trait of humans hasn't changed just because you turned into a gnome. I am not official at all though, so this is just an opinion. |
| Morgen01-21-07, 09:06 PM | No, you would gain the abilities of a gnome and loose the abilities of a human. You have the memories of the human, but that doesn't mean your not still now a gnome. Be more gnomish, it comes naturally. Always look on the bright side of life! |
| Some_call_me_Tim01-22-07, 07:12 PM | This is definitely something the Powers That Be(tm) need to address. I doubt they will since this is a contentious rules question and they don't answer those. Of course, "expect table variation" is a really poor response, as some judges could argue that your character needs audited. The problem is one camp believes that Favored Class is a result of racial preference and training (mental). So, you retain your favored class. The other camp believes that Favored Class is a result of your racial physical prowess. So you lose your favored class. In a home campaign, I would say you retain your old one and gain a new one as favored class is a combination of mental and physical traits. This also eliminates the argument (no small boon). The one thing we do know about is racial bonuses, "A bonus granted because of the culture a particular creature was brought up in or because of innate characteristics of that type of creature. If a creature's race changes (for instance, if it dies and is reincarnated), it loses all racial bonuses it had in its previous form." That would seem to imply that it doesn't matter if it is cultural or physical it is lost and the new one would apply. (Yes, I know favored class is not a racial bonus but this is the one mention of mental vs. physical racial qualities and which apply after a reincarnate.) |

| Some_call_me_Tim01-23-07, 11:48 AM | i assume that he simply made a mistake, and meant to say Deep Halfling, not Gnome. You can't end up as a Deep Halfling either. The chart in the LGCS for halflings only includes, lightfeet, stouts, and tallfellows. Wait a second. :lightbulb When looking in the Monster Manual, I noticed that racial traits are listed as extraordinary abilities, this includes favored class. The reincarnate spell specifically says you gain all extraordinary abilities of the new form and even refers you to Monster Manual. I would say that is rock solid as you are going to get, that you gain the favored class of the race you become. Now, there is one pesky little problem, nowhere does it say you lose your current racial extraordinary abilities even though common sense would say so. |

"Stout Halfling" = Deep halfing. its on the chart. As far as "loosing" Ex abilities of your previous race.. I believe you are right, you would loose your original Ex abilities (with the exceptions listed in the reincarnate spell : Feats & skill ranks.) |
| Mithreinmaethor01-23-07, 04:28 PM | i assume that he simply made a mistake, and meant to say Deep Halfling, not Gnome. No he meant gnome. If you read his post he even mentions the gnomes favored class as Bard. So to the original poster. Looks like you dont have to worry about what to do with the character after all. Time to roll up a new one. No RHoD for you. Sorry but I dont like the lose the character to Reincarnate thing either. |
| Some_call_me_Tim01-23-07, 05:26 PM | No he meant gnome. If you read his post he even mentions the gnomes favored class as Bard.In LG, you can only come back a plain-jane rock gnome. Since deep gnome, Svirfneblin, have favored class rogue, I'm assuming he meant rock gnome. |
| Mithreinmaethor01-24-07, 04:48 AM | Yeah after looking at the table in the LGCS and checking the actual spell yeah he/she just mispoke. But I feel for him/her and having to lose the emphasis on favored class like that. Of course I met a certain paladin that has been reincarnated at least a dozen times or more :) |
| mowaca01-25-07, 06:59 PM | I had another question for customer service and asked this one as well - the answer is your favored class changes and the example character would suffer a XP penalty. In LG, that's probably not a bad thing. :) |
