| Puggle Halfwine05-27-07, 08:31 PM | Hey guys, My halfling mounted fighter-type died twice in the same module and was reincarnated as a dwarf. Naturally, being a halfling before his untimely death, he had small sized weapons and armour- including a +2 suit of mithril full plate. So, a couple of questions: 1) Do magical weapons/armour/equipment resize to their wielder? All of my gear is +2 or better, in case that matters even slightly. 2) Plan B: can I get all his equipment resized? (perhaps treating it as 'damaged' under the Magic Item Repairation rules?) 3) Failing that, can I evoke the Charity of Friends clause if I sell everything for half and my gold pieces total is below the set amount? Or can I not do this because the gear is technically present and functional? 3.a) If I do this, can I rebuy items I had to spend a favour to gain access to or is that "lost"? 4) Failing everything else, can I apply to my regional Triad for access to the Sizing enchantment or anything similar so that I can continue to use my current gear? 5) The character is currently 8th level. Should I just retrain away his mounted combat feats and become a regular "foot soldier"? This might be an option given the hash shock to his system, including a completely new identity. 5.a) If I take this route, can I apply to my regional Triad for a special certification to change the character's name? |

My impression is there is a lot more character death this year, interesting. Unless there is an FAQ or errata you are probably limited by this ruling which specifically refers to clothing and jewellery not weapons and armor: SIZE AND MAGIC ITEMS When an article of magic clothing or jewelry is discovered, most of the time size shouldn’t be an issue. Many magic garments are made to be easily adjustable, or they adjust themselves magically to the wearer. Size should not keep characters of various kinds from using magic items. If it helps ... I recently recieved a favor that allowed me to sell a single magic item at full cost (and Kat recieved a similar dispensation on druids items when she rebuilt her druid) so there is some precedent for triad permission/special mission to perhaps trade the gear or have it modified at lower cost. |
| copper_wyrmling05-27-07, 09:48 PM | I'm very sorry to hear about Puggle - you have my sympathies :( Unfortunately, I think you're out of luck - the LGCS states that "equipment does not automatically resize unless specifically stated otherwise by the effect. If you change size and the effect does not state what happens to your items, only items in the following slots continue to function normally: cloak, amulet/brooch, and weapons. All other items either fall off or are absorbed into your new form and cease to function." I think this is primarily referring to spells and effects that change your size temporarily, but if magic armor automatically resizes when the wearer changes size, then it should work in this situation as well, and the LGCS says it doesn't. Centaurs got a special dispensation because it's an unavoidable situation for them, but this was the major reason I would never have risked a reincarnate with my cleric past about L7 (she also wears expensive mithral full plate). I might be wrong about this - I'm nobody official - but that's how I read the rules. I don't know of any way to get equipment resized under the CMI rules. I'm guessing this would require a Circle ruling. (3) should work, if you mean selling your gear for half price, looking at your new total net worth, and using charity of friends to increase it if it's below the specified value. Charity of friends works on net worth, not gp in hand, so I'm not sure what you mean by "the gear is technically present and functional" - if it's in your inventory, then its value is its full market value, but once you've sold it, it's gone (you always have the option to sell your items if you want). I imagine 3a) would work if the favor granted Any access to a particular type of armor or weapon upgrade - if you used a favor to gain Any access to mithral full plate, for example, you could buy a set of Medium mithral full plate. If, however, the favor allowed you to purchase one item and you've already used it, then I think you're out of luck (i.e. you can't buy a Medium version using the same favor), same as the fighter who gets his armor melted by a rust monster and doesn't have the gold to repair it before the deadline. You can't request special missions for item access, as I'm sure you know. It'll take you a while to retrain away all those mounted combat feats. Think carefully about whether it's worthwhile. Personally, I don't think I'd do it. |
| clannagh05-27-07, 09:57 PM | Hey guys, 4) Failing everything else, can I apply to my regional Triad for access to the Sizing enchantment or anything similar so that I can continue to use my current gear? 5) The character is currently 8th level. Should I just retrain away his mounted combat feats and become a regular "foot soldier"? This might be an option given the hash shock to his system, including a completely new identity. 5.a) If I take this route, can I apply to my regional Triad for a special certification to change the character's name? On 4) you are talking about a permanent reduce person ? Whilst a small sized dwarf may be cute, the mind boggles if you happen to walk into an antimagic field as a reduce person wearing small armor :) 5) If you do stay mounted look at getting access to a more hardcore mount. Traditionally a griffon, Dire Wolf or maybe a Dire Horse or even something like the Dire Eagle from RoS (which has 10' reach) could be worth a look. Large mounts may be useful less often than medium but tend to be more hardcore. 5). a) just as in real life I suspect the name of a PC can be changed on a whim. I cannot see why you would need triad permission. |
| bitznarf05-27-07, 10:16 PM | 5). a) just as in real life I suspect the name of a PC can be changed on a whim. I cannot see why you would need triad permission. I suspect it has to do with the fact that a PCs name is written on an AR. If the name suddenly changes, it could be cause for delay should a GM not familiar with the PC be looking at the PC's ARs for whatever reason, signing off favours or the like. |

If the name suddenly changes, it could be cause for delay should a GM not familiar with the PC be looking at the PC's ARs for whatever reason, signing off favours or the like. I know other people have done this by writing both PC names on the ARs for a while (e.g. "Puggle, aka Durin") and then switching to the second name only. So long as the change is documented, I can't see many GMs having trouble with it. |
| bitznarf05-27-07, 10:41 PM | Nor do I really, it would be more preventative than anything else. I actually have a character that goes as 'The Bard Formerly Known as Phil'. He actually started out his career as an Ashi Tribeseman from the Abor-Alz hills in Blood on Bright Sands. Due to an unfortunate accident involving a prone wererat (with class levels) that was both fighting defensively and power attacking for full, he is now a she. A female Suel to be precise. |
| magebeast05-27-07, 11:16 PM | You might try asking for a special mission to have the character regain his race, if you're willing to shelve the character for a bit in the meantime. |
| Maesto05-27-07, 11:46 PM | True, it is only a wish or miracle spell to get around the reincarnated part of things. Then again, not gonna happen in Ratik. Have you used your tropical intrigue favour? You could get a scroll of wish from there if you wanted to (yeah, I know it's expensive). Find a wizard with arcane mastery and caster level 7 and you're set. |
| Puggle Halfwine05-28-07, 07:50 AM | Actually, heh, I like the idea of the small sized dwarf. :) I might as well ask my regional triad. See what they say. My minions inform me that there's a 77% chance of rejection, but hey- it'd be cute. Otherwise- well, I guess I'll just sell everything and rebuy it for half value. Also, the favour for the mithril was most definitely a once-off favour (and a really, really awesome favour at that- if you've ever bought a suit of mithril full plate at a substantial discount, you might know the mod where I got it from). Anyway, it's mostly a moot point for this year- I only have four TUs left for that character and I'm going to be setting them aside for another player's Special Mission. We'll see about next year. :) |

One argument you could use is that firstly you are taking a big risk as there is a chance you will lose the effect if you cop a dispell magic, mage disjunct etc etc (though if you burnt a wish on it I assume that would raise the dispell DC considerably, not being a mage type i dont usually follow these things.) and secondly at higher levels racial advantages are not really that significant. |
| _metz_05-28-07, 11:40 PM | I think that there is more of a chance that you will get a special mission to resize your equipment by magical means. I would go about asking for that, would be a mean triad that said no... (Could be a funny special mod too) |
| Southernskies05-29-07, 09:11 AM | I may even get motivated to write it, once I finish this "blood of kord" special. |
