| pedr07-11-07, 06:49 AM | From the chat last night (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=883659) - Emphasis mine! WotC_Tulach> LG cards are: WotC_Tulach> Sojourner from Mist Kingdom (play a kobold) WotC_Tulach> Fatal Strike (auto-confirm critical, with a little drawback) WotC_Tulach> Let's Try That Again (re-roll skill check) WotC_Tulach> Rapid Preparation (fill an empty slot with a spell as a full-round action) WotC_Tulach> Jet Alleycat (a figurine of wondrous power, wakes you up when danger approaches) Also: RedKnightofKet> What is the ETA for the Greyhawk Ruins sourcebook for LG? Is that next week as well? WotC_Tulach> Greyhawk Ruins sourcebook is in final draft, and should be released next week as well. |
| Banor07-11-07, 06:56 AM | Holy Cup ! Kobold character ! Yesssssss ! |
| _metz_07-11-07, 07:13 AM | Kobold! omg omg omg omg *runs around the room crazy KOBOLDS!!! *keeps running around crazily! If this happens its the BEST THING EVER. |
| Banor07-11-07, 07:17 AM | Kobold! omg omg omg omg *runs around the room crazy KOBOLDS!!! *keeps running around crazily! If this happens its the BEST THING EVER. Pretty much the same reaction :) |
| Suvarov45407-11-07, 07:45 AM | Yeah! Nothing says "optimization" like a race that has penalties to both Str and Con (without a large bonus to Dex or a caster stat) which is hated and assumed to be "EEEEVIL!" in most lands. Wait, did I need to use <sarcasm> tags with that? :) |
| _metz_07-11-07, 08:02 AM | Yeah! Nothing says "optimization" like a race that has penalties to both Str and Con (without a large bonus to Dex or a caster stat) which is hated and assumed to be "EEEEVIL!" in most lands. Wait, did I need to use <sarcasm> tags with that? :) The odd thing is every player will want one. Just quietly though, Dracolexi. |
| Banor07-11-07, 08:44 AM | Yeah! Nothing says "optimization" like a race that has penalties to both Str and Con (without a large bonus to Dex or a caster stat) which is hated and assumed to be "EEEEVIL!" in most lands. Wait, did I need to use <sarcasm> tags with that? :) But you are small with 30 ft movement, 1 natural armor and 2 dex bonus, strength doesnt matter to me Kobold sorcerer / Rogues are awsome. Not mention that you are terribly cool |
| LachlarlanIII07-11-07, 09:40 AM | The odd thing is every player will want one. Just quietly though, Dracolexi. I will play one and I will break him! So it is written, so it shall be! :D |
| control freak07-11-07, 09:42 AM | =O (falls to the feet of wizards) i beg you allow me to make my dragon shaman kobalt or at least a duskblade kobalt :D |
| Ariante07-11-07, 09:49 AM | =O (falls to the feet of wizards) i beg you allow me to make my dragon shaman kobalt or at least a duskblade kobalt :D A kobalt? what's that, a subspecies of Blue? ;) |
| control freak07-11-07, 09:51 AM | fine kobold dragon shaman :D i really want to do that so i can be a dragon related or draconic race |
| bitznarf07-11-07, 10:23 AM | It's funny, but ever since kobolds became a player race they are all Chaotic Good rebels yearning to throw off the reputation of their evil kin. http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0044.html |
| GreatSiron07-11-07, 11:16 AM | I will get this card. I am going to make a kobold. I shall name him Pun-Pun. All will bow down to him.:) |
| Fleetfang07-11-07, 12:00 PM | Wow! This throws a wrench in my works. I was about to go into Greyhawk Ruins with a PC who was going to be a kobold who had been reincarnated into a deep halfling... But with this auspicious news, my PC's whole schtick just went out the window! ARG! |
| Mocoso07-11-07, 12:12 PM | i wonder if i can be kobolt duskblade :D :D :D |
| Shaudius07-11-07, 12:18 PM | The only thing that will make me play a kobold is if they are given access to the natural weapon variant from the Races of the Dragon web enhancement found at this link: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20060420a |
| Fleetfang07-11-07, 12:22 PM | Shadius, Actually, the "slight build" option from that same web enhancement is ten times better than giving them the natural attacks. Being able to act as Tiny when it benefits you means an extra bonus to AC from size, crazy bonuses to hide, and getting to end your turn in another character's space without squeezing. And if you have a small longspear, you still threaten to 10 feet, and you still have 30 foot movement. Oh, and because it only applies when it benefits you, that means you aren't treated as tiny for grapples and that kind of thing. Slight build really helps to make up for the short end of the stick that they get with the ability penalties. It doesn't make them overpowered, but it does grant a little somethign to offset the effective negative level adjustment. |
| Umbra_Kaitou07-11-07, 12:31 PM | I'm excited for these, as its the first time i've cobbled together enough points to actually receive cards for once ^_^ of course...i'll probably get 3 xendrik cards x_x |
| catsclaw07-11-07, 02:15 PM | A kobold's going to be my Greyhawk Ruins character, but I'm really hoping they open up the substitution levels for Dragonblood Sorcerer, Kobold Rogue, and the Dragon Wings feat. I'm not sure what I'd be building towards -- probably Spellwarp Sniper, although I don't know I'd have room for all the feats I want -- but running around as a kobold with wings would be kickass. |
| Rawveggie07-11-07, 02:30 PM | So the group of adventurers that will save Greyhawk and all of Oerth is...kobolds? <sigh> Maybe this time the bad guys _should_ win... ;) :P Now I'll have to make a character that has Favored Enemy (reptilian)! -Raw |
| catsclaw07-11-07, 02:33 PM | Now I'll have to make a character that has Favored Enemy (reptilian)! :devil:Favored Enemy (dragon) works, and might prove more useful in the higher levels, too. |
| ShakaUVM07-11-07, 04:10 PM | Holy Cup ! Kobold character ! Yesssssss ! Yes yes yes yes yes yes =) |
| Mithreinmaethor07-11-07, 05:18 PM | Almost makes me want to turn in my RPGA card sheesh So many other race variants out there and they have to go this route. |
| bitznarf07-11-07, 05:21 PM | Almost makes me want to turn in my RPGA card sheesh So many other race variants out there and they have to go this route. Honestly what's the big deal? Is it really going to impact how much you enjoy the game if someone else plays a kobold? |
| Shaudius07-11-07, 06:13 PM | Centaur and Ashterati in Bright Sands(also badlands dwarf but that hardly counts) Snow Elf Creation Card Kobold Creation Card 2 Races in Greyhawk Ruins(or so I hear) They didn't just go the kobold route, its just one of at least 6 variant races(if there really are two races in GR) that you can play. Right now you could have 4 different alternate races for your PCs(assuming there is an alternate race in GR and you have a bright sands PC, a snow elf creation card, and a kobold creation card). Shawn Almost makes me want to turn in my RPGA card sheesh So many other race variants out there and they have to go this route. |
| AlfredWAB07-11-07, 06:14 PM | Is Kobold a possible reincarnated race? Does this make reincarnation less risky if you have the card? AAA |
| bitznarf07-11-07, 06:18 PM | Is Kobold a possible reincarnated race? Does this make reincarnation less risky if you have the card? AAA We don't know, and we don't know. |
| Sieylianna07-11-07, 06:25 PM | Honestly what's the big deal? Is it really going to impact how much you enjoy the game if someone else plays a kobold? Kobolds are much like drow, they are intended to be evil races. Yes, there are exceptions, but there shouldn't be a table full of them. Ed |
| bitznarf07-11-07, 06:56 PM | Yes, but *will it negatively impact your enjoyment of the game*? If your answer is yes, why does it make a difference? |
| catsclaw07-11-07, 07:01 PM | Kobolds are much like drow, they are intended to be evil races. Yes, there are exceptions, but there shouldn't be a table full of them.I'm not sure what the population of kobolds is across the Flaness, but assuming 1,000,000 (with only about 2% being good or neutral) you've got a population of 20,000 kobolds who aren't evil. And if you're of good alignment, you have a very obvious reason to go out adventuring rather than stay at home with your tribe. I also don't have a big problem with kobolds being overrepresented in Greyhawk Ruins (which seems likely) since they're a natural fit for the setting. |
| reddingstacey07-11-07, 07:25 PM | Has anybody heard if we will be able to use the rogue racial substitution levels and feats from "Races of the Dragon"? BR, Stacey |
| bitznarf07-11-07, 07:27 PM | No, there is no other information right now other than 'there will be a kobold creation card'. |
| Britt07-11-07, 08:30 PM | Last I heard (and I haven't seen the final draft) there are no race options in the Greyhawk Ruins minicampaign. Usually evil just means more than 50%, and that is usually based on society or heritage. These kobolds are from the Mist Kingdom, named for Mist Dragons, which are neutral. That indicates a different society and heritage. There is more to the card than just the race itself, but I don't know how much I'm at liberty to release at this point. |
| JJeff07-11-07, 09:11 PM | There is more to the card than just the race itself, but I don't know how much I'm at liberty to release at this point. Can you check what you can tell us then? So we can start planning and dreaming for a proper LG character, instead of just rubbing our hands in glee and thinking of Pun-Pun builds. Wish the pro-kobold spells in RotDra will suddenly be Opened... |
| reddingstacey07-11-07, 10:06 PM | I have already made my kobold. Hopefully all of the options I used will be legal. :) Stacey Can you check what you can tell us then? So we can start planning and dreaming for a proper LG character, instead of just rubbing our hands in glee and thinking of Pun-Pun builds. Wish the pro-kobold spells in RotDra will suddenly be Opened... |
| Shaudius07-11-07, 11:05 PM | Nevermind saw the reference to the canon source in the other thread, all the information I was going on was from Dragon 350. Shawn Last I heard (and I haven't seen the final draft) there are no race options in the Greyhawk Ruins minicampaign. | LGMoses07-11-07, 11:35 PM | o ok, so its not just suddenly going to be kobolds from the caves around the lands coming out and walking into towns like its nothing, its kobolds from some strange island coming from afar. Thats kinda neat. I played a races of the dragon kobold once.... I can't remember exactly but i do believe i was hitting the 30's with my search checks. Very very high. |
| Puggle Halfwine07-12-07, 12:19 AM | This made my day. ALL HAIL LORD BRITT! YOUR LOYAL MINIONS BECOME EVEN MORE DEVOTED UPON HEARING THIS WONDERFUL, GLORIOUS NEWS! ALL HAIL LORD BRITT! (The caps lock shows how serious I am :O) P.S. Thank you RPGA for listening to your patrons. :D And especially thank you Britt, who no doubt single-handedly caused this wonderful thing to occur. P.P.S. Mine shall be called Pun Pun. Uhh, as well. |
| cheeky_ktty07-12-07, 12:20 AM | Kobolds! Yay! Kobolds are SO cute!!! I shall name mine Squishy, and Squishy will be mine! She will be cute and cuddly and prance around with slashing weapons :) Mmmm, slashing weapons... |
| GreatSiron07-12-07, 01:08 AM | When will we be getting these cards? Are they in the mail now, or will it be a few more weeks? |
| _metz_07-12-07, 08:11 AM | I am really looking forward to my kobold. It HAS to be a sorcerer, as thats the coolest thing to be as a kobold, and say hello to draconic feats! I wish I could make a viable half mist dragon kobold, but it won't be very viable till level 15... Kobolds are awesome. Just awesome. |
| The_Jester07-12-07, 09:48 AM | I just hope they open up stuff from Races of the Dragon now... |
| dougemes07-12-07, 11:08 AM | As a player, I am happy to see MORE choices for character creation. Kobolds are the underdog (pun intended) and it allows for classic hero myth. As a DM, I _will_ be providing a negative 2 Circumstance penalty to any kobold pc's named: Pun-pun, nup-nup, Deekin, or Meepo. Game on! |
| Shaudius07-12-07, 11:19 AM | To the last in your list of kobold names you will penalize, How dare you speak the name of he who must not be named!! |
| LachlarlanIII07-12-07, 11:28 AM | As a DM, I _will_ be providing a negative 2 Circumstance penalty to any kobold pc's named: Pun-pun, nup-nup, Deekin, or Meepo. Game on! Hi Doug! What about Opeem? |
| GeorgeFHarris07-12-07, 11:37 AM | Centaur and Ashterati in Bright Sands(also badlands dwarf but that hardly counts) Snow Elf Creation Card Kobold Creation Card 2 Races in Greyhawk Ruins(or so I hear) You do realize that we've had an alternate race Snow Elf in the campaign since Year 2? GH |
| KShaver07-12-07, 12:52 PM | I have already made my kobold. Hopefully all of the options I used will be legal. :) Stacey Gotta watch out on that one, the web enhancements are going to be very iffy, and any racial substitution levels don't seem likely unless a region makes a meta-org just for kobolds (which might be forced non-triad region like snow elves). |
| Donald_Cannith07-12-07, 01:04 PM | which mod is deekin from? |
| bitznarf07-12-07, 01:14 PM | Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide and Hordes of the Underdark |
| KarmaInferno07-12-07, 01:31 PM | P.P.S. Mine shall be called Pun Pun. Uhh, as well. BEHOLD THE KOBOLD ARMADA! And they shall ALL be named "Pun-Pun". I anticipate delicious confusion across the lands. :D -karma |
| DarkKnight07-12-07, 02:08 PM | But Kobolds ate my baby.:weep: |
| Mithreinmaethor07-12-07, 02:23 PM | Honestly what's the big deal? Is it really going to impact how much you enjoy the game if someone else plays a kobold? Why include a monster race that is in direct conflict with another core race. Is PVP now going to be allowed in LG so that all the gnomes and kobolds can run around trying to kill each other ? So are Drow and Duregar next ? So we can fully institute PVP. Sorry not my cup of tea |
| Grantor07-12-07, 02:34 PM | Why include a monster race that is in direct conflict with another core race. There are nations that are in direct conflict with each other. And factions within nations that are on the edge of civil war (e.g. White Harts and Strong Harts in the Duchy of Urnst). And for that matter, I've played mods where the PCs had to parley with Kobolds; combat was not an option. So why should this prevent the Circle from listening to player requests? Balance is more the issue, I would think. And I don't see a problem here. |
| LachlarlanIII07-12-07, 02:37 PM | But Kobolds ate my baby.:weep: Your baby deserved to get eaten after it finger of deathed our mage. :D |
| DarkKnight07-12-07, 02:54 PM | Your baby deserved to get eaten after it finger of deathed our mage. :D Oh  Good point and good riddance. :) |
| Demoyn07-12-07, 03:11 PM | And for that matter, I've played mods where the PCs had to parley with Kobolds; combat was not an option. I played that mod. It would have been a good mod if it wasn't COMPLETELY reliant on parleying with a monster race that is absolutely hated by a player race, and located in the middle of the wilderness where there's nothing to stop you from killing them on sight (except a railroad-happy DM). Unfortunately, due to the aforementioned reliance, the mod absolutely sucked (and still does). |
| GreatSiron07-12-07, 03:55 PM | Why include a monster race that is in direct conflict with another core race. Is PVP now going to be allowed in LG so that all the gnomes and kobolds can run around trying to kill each other ? So are Drow and Duregar next ? So we can fully institute PVP. Sorry not my cup of tea Maybe these kobolds have never even seen a gnome? I mean, they do come from an island off one of the least hospitable places on all of Oreth. |
| Grantor07-12-07, 04:09 PM | I played that mod. It would have sucked even more if the Kobolds swarm-killed any Gnomes in the group. By your arguement, all criminal underworld related mods suck, since Paladins can't just go in and kill them all, but are forced to parley instead. But, in the mod I'm refering to, there was nothing to stop the players from killing the kobolds on sight. That was allowed in this mod and there were stats for such an occurance. However, with the heroes sorely outnumbered, with half of the kobalds out of reach of melee attacks, it was obviously the wrong way to resolve the situation. So, I guess I disagree with you. But, that's all beside the point. Dwarves get a +1 to attack rolls against Half-Orcs (due to their Orc blood trait), yet those two races have been allowed to play together since 3.0. If these racial enemies can accept one another for a good cause, why can't Kobolds and Gnomes (and Goblins, for that matter), play together? |
| Demoyn07-12-07, 04:24 PM | The part you missed (or, more likely, was too vague for you) is the railroading DM part. That's what made my despise for this mod excessive. Regardless, there should NEVER be a mod that requires a specific action or you fail, especially not at the very beginning of the module. Ok, so talking to kobolds isn't all bad (as witnessed by not only this mod, but also the very first 3.0 adventure path.. the one with Meepo). That's not the point. The point is that mods shouldn't require a "my way or the highway" answer. And yes, we're both talking about the same mod. The one with the dwarf. |
| Mithreinmaethor07-12-07, 04:34 PM | Maybe these kobolds have never even seen a gnome? I mean, they do come from an island off one of the least hospitable places on all of Oreth. Just means they wont see it coming when the Gnomes descend upon them :) Just a small quote from Races of the Dragons (Pg 47) under the heading of Kobolds and other races. The last sentence states: "If gnomes and kobolds are ever in proximity to one another without fighting, it’s only because each side is taking the time to plan a decisive assault" |
| Britt07-12-07, 05:29 PM | I have been told I can't share the text yet, so you'll have to wait. The good news is that the wait won't be very long. |
| bertman407-12-07, 05:37 PM | Favored Enemy (dragon) works, and might prove more useful in the higher levels, too. That only works if they are able to take the Dragonwrought feat from Races of the Dragon. Otherwise they are still considered Humanoid with Reptilian subtype (also Dragonblood subtype if using RotD). Bertman |
| bertman407-12-07, 05:46 PM | So are Drow and Duregar next ? Those are both level adjustment races. So the answer would be no. Oh wait, they already did the stupid Centaur thing with Monstrous Humanoid level advancement. I supposed it can be tried but I personally thingk Centuars were a big mistake. Kobolds are fine. It's been established in core modules that there are good kobolds. Next race I'd like to see allowed are Goblins. Small creatures with 30ft movement rocks! Bertman |
| Grantor07-12-07, 05:47 PM | Regardless, there should NEVER be a mod that requires a specific action or you fail, especially not at the very beginning of the module. Never? |
| bertman407-12-07, 05:59 PM | My friends and I have decided to make an all kobold group for Greyhawk Ruins. Midnight is Black Kobold: Dragonwrought Kobold Sorcerer Azure is Blue Kobold: Kobold Ranger Crimson is Red Kobold: Dragonwing Kobold Rogue Lemon is Yellow Kobold: Kobold Fighter Verdant is Green Kobold: Kobold Druid Argent is Silver Kobold: Kobold Favored Soul Together, they are Mighty Morphin Power Kobolds! Fear their power! Mwahahahaha! Just kidding. Bertman |
| Sieylianna07-12-07, 06:00 PM | Yes, but *will it negatively impact your enjoyment of the game*? If your answer is yes, why does it make a difference? My latest three LG tables were my human and 5 non-humans, my human and 4 non-humans, and my human and 5 non-humans. It's hard to sustain a sense of disbelief when centaurs, kobolds and snow elves are more common than humans. Ed |
| Eric Anondson07-12-07, 06:15 PM | So are Drow and Duregar next ?Oh god. I'm putting my head through a concrete wall if drow are added to the campaign as a PC option. Maybe I'm naive, but I still cling to the notion—something that keeps Greyhawk distinctive from FR—that the drow were nothing like commonplace and familiar. Drow showing up on the streets of the cities of Flanaess all over the place is just wrong. |
| Eric Anondson07-12-07, 06:16 PM | Together, they are Mighty Morphin Power Kobolds!Or, grab swarmfighting and you can be a reptilian Voltron! |
| catsclaw07-12-07, 06:20 PM | That only works if they are able to take the Dragonwrought feat from Races of the Dragon. Otherwise they are still considered Humanoid with Reptilian subtype (also Dragonblood subtype if using RotD).RotD also includes the statement "For all effects related to race, a kobold is considered a dragon". I'm assuming that's the rule in effect for LG. |
| Shaudius07-12-07, 07:00 PM | When the campaign premiered at Gen Con 2001, there were three mods. Dragonscales and Morningtide and River of Blood were two of them. They both contained a monster called a Xvart(pretty much a blue kobold/goblin mix). In one of the mods(River of Blood) the Xvarts were conducting an evil ritual involving small children, in the other one was a paladin(or other LG character type it was almost exactly six years ago that I played the mods). If you played River of Blood first your disposition in Dragonscales would be far different than if you played Dragonscales first. This was back in the point of LG when everyone was still in the kill everything that moves mode of both 2nd edition, and LC. Some combats you just shouldn't fight, and every creature is not neccesarily what you think it is. |
| Hariman07-12-07, 07:07 PM | Cool. I gotta get me one of those cards. I just can't resist playing a Kobold. The only major choice will be caster or rogue... I might build up a pure rogue just to have a trap finder that can actually find and disable traps. (My rogue wizard can barely find the traps right now.) Although, going into another class like cleric or druid would just be too much fun. |
| Morgen07-13-07, 12:08 AM | *sniffles* It's taken so long for my beautiful journey to finally come to it's peak, but finally we shall have true Kobold play. Never before have I felt so justified in my months of constant begging to have them allowed as a playable race here in Living Greyhawk. I was actually starting to loose hope, but I should have known LG wouldn't let me down! I can only imagine how many different kobolds I'll make and play. My Kobold Healer shall truly be a force for randomness and chaos. |
| bitznarf07-13-07, 12:12 AM | Ewww... adding a poor class to a poor race. |
| JJeff07-13-07, 12:45 AM | Oh behave, Bitznarf... Can we set up a gathering of Kobold Paladins called "Order of Tajlo" and all worship Heironeous? Now with Craft(Trapmaking), the PCs can do more ambushes than getting ambushed |
| Morgen07-13-07, 12:49 AM | Just be glad the NPC classes were taken out, otherwise you'd be dealing with my Kobold Aristocrat! ;) |
| bitznarf07-13-07, 12:57 AM | Oh behave, Bitznarf... Can we set up a gathering of Kobold Paladins called "Order of Tajlo" and all worship Heironeous? Now with Craft(Trapmaking), the PCs can do more ambushes than getting ambushed Eh, I'm just not enthralled with the Healer class. Personally I'm trying to figure out a way to make an effective kobold monk. |
| scon4007-13-07, 02:06 AM | P.S. Thank you RPGA for listening to your patrons. :D And especially thank you Britt, who no doubt single-handedly caused this wonderful thing to occur. Yes, it was all Britt. Especially when I wrote the card up. That was all Britt too. <pout> <pout> I think the next race card we do will be a Shrieker PC. Or perhaps a lump of coal. <pffffft> ;) |
| gomeztoo07-13-07, 02:16 AM | Never? I:m pretty sure 90% of the mods require the action of the PCs accepting the mission from a total stranger ;) I allowed one player to switch PCs once, when he had a forsaker who didn't want to give in to having spells cast (zone of truth iirc). |
| gomeztoo07-13-07, 02:19 AM | Or perhaps a lump of coal. <pffffft> Will it be a lump of coal from an cool Core region? |
| Britt07-13-07, 02:36 AM | Yes, it was all Britt. Especially when I wrote the card up. That was all Britt too. <pout> <pout> Don't take it personally, Steven; Puggle is slightly delusional and thinks I'm a deity...which I'm not denying ;) I think the next race card we do will be a Shrieker PC. Or perhaps a lump of coal. <pffffft> And that would be thanks to Steven. We have to give credit where credit is due, after all ;) Actually, I don't think I wrote any of these cards, except maybe the critical confirmation one. Well, I wrote the text for it, but I think it was Tulach's idea. I wrote one or two in the next set, but most of these were thanks to other Circle members. |
| Britt07-13-07, 02:37 AM | Will it be a lump of coal from an cool Core region? Yes, you must be from the Invoked Devastation. |
| _metz_07-13-07, 03:05 AM | Why include a monster race that is in direct conflict with another core race. Is PVP now going to be allowed in LG so that all the gnomes and kobolds can run around trying to kill each other ? So are Drow and Duregar next ? So we can fully institute PVP. Sorry not my cup of tea I think you are frankly wigging out too much. 1. PCs are not distinctive of thier race. 2. Racism/Specism in the game is up to each individual character, are you saying because Gendwar Angrim is allowed I can kill every non dwarf race that ever fought the dwarves? 3. You are applying Races of the Dragon box text far too literally. Greyhawk has its own Canon thank you very much, I suggest you read it. 4. Such issues are already in place, look at the 'Annoying elves' as I call them (its a race) in NMR mods, where if you say the wrong thing at the start even if you don't like elves the mod is over, Being a Half Orc and playing Pomarj mods or mods involving Turrosh Mak/effects of his invasion, Playing a speicif type of Dwarf, PLAYING A SCARLET BROTHERHOOD SUEL I think you are just grumbling for no reason at all, and frankly it will make the games more FUN if people deliberately choose to play an amusing sub optimal race. I am all for my dwarf niggling any elves in the party, but don't approve of such statements as 'races that hate each other will PVP' IN conclusion: Who said all gnomes in LG live near and hate kobolds? Who said all gnomes were followers of Garl Glittergold? Who said these Kobolds would be followers of Kurtalmak? I don't see that being very likely as its an evil deity... (therefore don't necessarily hate Gnomes if its not their faith) WHo said some of the OTHER stuff in Races of the Dragon apply, which you have so easily ignored, such as the 'kobolds descending from Dragons - and as such the ramifications of Kobolds from Neutral or good dragons, who have differing deific beliefs?' FINALLY: any Gnome that attacks a non evil Kobold on sight, just for racial reasons would be an evil/fanatical Gnome that wouldn't be allowed in LG as a PC, and as such how would it ever come up??? If you don't like Kobolds, DON'T play one. If you don't like other people playing them, then find other people to play with, and if you feel that Races must brutally attack each other on sight then you should go play an MMORPG not our Roleplaying game, where we GET to make choices on our characters, not follow a specific formula. (There are precedents, and some guidelines, but why should non LG canon matter?) If you can provide a credible arguement on how Kobolds will do what you say, then by all means present it, if not, let us Pro Kobolds frolic in joy! |
| gomeztoo07-13-07, 03:50 AM | I wrote one or two in the next set, but most of these were thanks to other Circle members. There already is a next set? Any chance Triads can get info on those if there are any region affecting issues? (considering I already have people coming up with resident-kobold-explaining module proposals...) |
| Iswald07-13-07, 10:06 AM | At a guess, I'd say that the number of PC deaths will increase as the general population treats kobolds pretty much as they would any other typically evil creatures. If you hang out in the BK, it might be safer. Do kobolds rate higher, lower or the same as elves when in Ket? |
| Demoyn07-13-07, 10:07 AM | Never? No. Never. The one single thing that makes RPGs better than MMORPGs (aside from possibly physical human interaction... if you're into that) is that we are free to make decisions in RPGs and aren't railroaded in one direction. If your only option in a module is to be railroaded or give up the slot you're playing in, what kind of choice is that? Yes, adventure hooks are a tad different, since having 14,000 playing in your game requires a little "least common denominator" effect, but we're not talking about an adventure hook. I should not have to play against my character's alignment or religious beliefes just because it's the only way to get xp and gold from the module. Our DM made the kobolds argumentative when she ran the mod. Well yes, they're guards and such, but they're still yipping kobolds. We failed our initial diplomacy check, and at that point the mod was mostly over. Modules shouldn't be decided on a single skill check. There should ALWAYS be another way. Now the majority of my issue with this mod was how the DM ran it, but I read the mod afterwards, and the way it was written wasn't much better. |
| GeorgeFHarris07-13-07, 10:16 AM | When the campaign premiered at Gen Con 2001, there were three mods. Now that is a race that I would like to play in Greyhawk ruins. If nothing else because of those modules. Would we need to get Erik Mona back in the circle to write up a card for them? Just played Return to the Storm Tower last night with the same PC that played Fires of the Storm Tower. After that module, I don't want to see any PC Kobolds or any NPC Kobolds. Is it evil to subdue a prisoner to -200 hp, even if you were supposed to be rescuing him? GH |
| Umbra_Kaitou07-13-07, 12:58 PM | If i make a kobold, i need to be sure to add ranks in Craft Candlemaking...and any skills used to avoid theivery >> |
| Reylance07-13-07, 03:12 PM | Thank you, Steven Conforti, who has again proven himself the finest Circle Member. I will gladly accept this opportunity to play a Kobold. Maybe I'll buck tradition and be a wizard? Or perhaps the card unlocks some Races of the Dragon goodies. Can't wait! |
| mlund07-13-07, 04:21 PM | Our DM made the kobolds argumentative when she ran the mod. Well yes, they're guards and such, but they're still yipping kobolds. We failed our initial diplomacy check, and at that point the mod was mostly over. I've got the module printed out in my car. I'm running it tonight. There are ways around those kobold's other than diplomacy. Heck, the module runs fine even if no one in your party speaks Draconic. It isn't nearly as fun in my opinion, but you can still complete the mission. Kobolds are cowards when their leader isn't around. The module has specific text to the effect of scaring them off. Modules shouldn't be decided on a single skill check. There should ALWAYS be another way. Now the majority of my issue with this mod was how the DM ran it, but I read the mod afterwards, and the way it was written wasn't much better. I agree. Few modules are written that way - though frequently DMs misread the module text and miss the other "outs." Heck, when I first played the module my group hit a pair of encounters where the situation was supposed to be an OR statement (if you avoided Encounter 10, Encounter 11 happens - if you did not avoid Encounter 10, Encounter 11 never takes place). It always helps to read through the module twice. Re-reading the encounters after the appendixes often makes things more clear. - Marty Lund |
| Genghis Cohen07-15-07, 04:25 PM | I'm not going to play a kobold. Its not for me. That said, I'd like to thank the Circle for offering all of us the option. Lets not forget that before this year we would only receive RPGA reward cards, many of which are not allowed in LG, for campaigns played by seventeen people worldwide. This is a welcome, and appreciated change. |
| Puggle Halfwine07-15-07, 07:44 PM | Yes, it was all Britt. Especially when I wrote the card up. That was all Britt too. <pout> <pout> I can only assume so! I think the next race card we do will be a Shrieker PC. Or perhaps a lump of coal. <pffffft> ;) Hmm... interesting coal builds... I'm thinking fighter for the DR? If I could take my coal PC into Stoneblessed and pick Dwarf, I could be a lump of coal Dwarven Defender so my low movement speed (0ft/round) doesn't affect me... can't say it doesn't have flavour either! |
| Puggle Halfwine07-15-07, 07:48 PM | Don't take it personally, Steven; Puggle is slightly delusional and thinks I'm a deity...which I'm not denying ;) Say it isn't so, Lord Britt! :O Your loyal minions await your every command! |

| control freak07-15-07, 09:42 PM | id play a succubus, devil, demon or dragons :D |
| Puggle Halfwine07-15-07, 10:47 PM | Oh Lord Britt, the wait is agonizing! Please; reveal your secrets! Post what "other stuff" is open with the kobold card, as well as if it's the stock-standard PHB kobold or a varient such as the jungle kobold which loses int instead of con? |
| Hariman07-16-07, 01:31 AM | id play a succubus, devil, demon or dragons :D Actually, dragon magazines 320 and 332 had articles with 20 level class progressions for metallic and chromatic dragons, respectively. They were really cool because you COULD play a dragon from level 1 to level 20! But, they're currently only in Dragon. Races of the Dragon has the Draconic Racial Class, which first turns a character Draconic, then turns the character into Half Dragon. (The character must take his first level as "Draconic", which adds skill bonuses. The second level makes you draconic (ECL +1) And levels 3 and 4 make a character half dragon. The great flaw of the Draconic Racial Class, is that it doesn't add any skill points, HP, saves bonuses (beyond what ability scores grant) or any other thing that keeps a character alive. So classes like Dragon Devotee and Dragon Disciple can make better choices, as they do grant HP, skill points, etc. Currently, I'm just hoping kobolds get access to things like Slight Build, Natural Weapons, and a few other things to offset their inherent weaknesses. |
| Umbra_Kaitou07-16-07, 12:36 PM | Oh Lord Britt, the wait is agonizing! Please; reveal your secrets! | Puggle Halfwine07-19-07, 01:38 AM | BRITT IS AWESOME! P.S. My spell list for today (I'm level two now!) 0th Detect Poison Detect Magic Inflict Light Wounds Light 1st (d) Protection from Chaos Bless Shield of Faith Magic Weapon |
| cheeky_ktty07-19-07, 01:55 AM | I want access to play a dragon. A bronze dragon :D Bronze dragons are pretty, and cool, and have water breathing, and polymorph into little cute animals- like fuzzy bunnies and cuddle squirrels. |
| Britt07-19-07, 02:17 AM | Puggle, I don't grant inflict spells, sorry. I'm a pacifist. CK, we have albino squirrels in Austin. |
| cheeky_ktty07-19-07, 02:41 AM | Puggle, I don't grant inflict spells, sorry. I'm a pacifist. CK, we have albino squirrels in Austin. Oooooo!!! Cuddly little white squirrels, how sweet  (I live in Australia- I've never seen a squirrel before. Except on T.V) |
| cheeky_ktty07-19-07, 02:50 AM | Puggle, I don't grant inflict spells, sorry. I'm a pacifist. CK, we have albino squirrels in Austin. Puggle would like to add, (I have temporarily highjacked his laptop) that the Inflict Light Wounds spell on his spell list is not for hurting people... It's for healing undead :D |
| Britt07-19-07, 02:53 AM | Apparently there's a colony of sqrls living in and around the Perth zoo. You should go check it out. |
| Britt07-19-07, 02:54 AM | Puggle would like to add, (I have temporarily highjacked his laptop) that the Inflict Light Wounds spell on his spell list is not for hurting people... It's for healing undead :D Oh, well I'm 4-square against undead as well. You have undead in Australia? |
| cheeky_ktty07-19-07, 03:07 AM | Oh, well I'm 4-square against undead as well. You have undead in Australia? Perth, huh? Well I live in Armidale which is kinda on the other side of Australia, and traveling over isn't likely, considering most of my spare cash goes to traveling to nearby cons- Brisbane, Canberra and Sydney (hopefully for Winterfest). And yes, Australia has PLENTY of undead- well where I live usually does. Unfortunately, because of higher powers, NSW is going from Ratik back to Perrenland..... *starts to weep softly* I'm gonna miss Ratik. Puggle would like to add... PRAISE BRITT  |
| Britt07-19-07, 03:19 AM | It does look like a ways for you to get to Ratik, but you could hop a train down to ACT or, for a longer trip, to Vic. I did enjoy Melbourne; there's a really good bakery downtown there. What is it, like an 8 hour train ride to ACT? Probably be about 14 hours to Melbourne :/ |
| _metz_07-19-07, 03:37 AM | It does look like a ways for you to get to Ratik, but you could hop a train down to ACT or, for a longer trip, to Vic. I did enjoy Melbourne; there's a really good bakery downtown there. What is it, like an 8 hour train ride to ACT? Probably be about 14 hours to Melbourne :/ There is no direct train. Would be an 8 hour train, followed by about a 2-3 hour one. The cost for her would be at least $100 plus each way I think. So its not cheap. Melbourne is really untenable. Kat, I hope you do come to Winterfest, it's a great con, and long time no see :) Britt, pity SRDU isn't near Sydney this year. Its hard for us folk to get to Cairns but its a really good gaming group there, they'll look after you really well if you end up getting there this year. Puggle, you crazy. I hope you come to winterfest also so we can meet. I hope you have been having fun in -6 degree Armidale weather lol |
| Reylance07-19-07, 12:08 PM | Puggle, you crazy. I hope you come to winterfest also so we can meet. I hope you have been having fun in -6 degree Armidale weather lol -6 degrees? Centigrade? | bitznarf07-19-07, 12:29 PM | Wimps :P Try -25 C or so on average. |
| catsclaw07-19-07, 12:38 PM | Puggle, I don't grant inflict spells, sorry. I'm a pacifist. That's ok, he illegally slotted Inflict Light Wounds in a 0th level slot. He's running an illegal build -- probably only took the cleric levels for the domain powers -- and he'll get yanked as soon as a circle member notices. |
| bitznarf07-19-07, 01:08 PM | I didn't realize gods could deny spells based on anything other than alignment. |
| evilaustintom07-19-07, 01:47 PM | When the campaign premiered at Gen Con 2001, there were three mods... Just a quick note - LG premiered at GenCon 2000. Year 1 for LG was actually about a year and a half long in real time. Tom Thowe |
| Umbra_Kaitou07-19-07, 02:09 PM | I didn't realize gods could deny spells based on anything other than alignment. I think your failing to notice the fact that they're gods They can grant or deny whatever they wish...who are we to stop them? |
| Shaudius07-19-07, 02:14 PM | Yeah, my bad, thats what I was talking about. I did play the premier either way. Just a quick note - LG premiered at GenCon 2000. Year 1 for LG was actually about a year and a half long in real time. Tom Thowe |
| Puggle Halfwine07-19-07, 09:43 PM | Puggle, you crazy. I hope you come to winterfest also so we can meet. I hope you have been having fun in -6 degree Armidale weather lol It was cold, but I'm from Canberra- nothing I couldn't handle. ;) I'll be at Winterfest as well as Draigcon this year. I'm looking to get a fair bit of LG in. ;) |
| _metz_07-19-07, 09:48 PM | It was cold, but I'm from Canberra- nothing I couldn't handle. ;) I'll be at Winterfest as well as Draigcon this year. I'm looking to get a fair bit of LG in. ;) You are from Canberra? there there... *pats on head ;) I'll try not to you kill you I guess! |
| Puggle Halfwine07-20-07, 06:59 AM | All my characters are easy to kill, so you should have no trouble with that. :D Death is just part of the fun! Edit: I retract that. My characters are remarkably hard to kill, but alas they have me as a player. I charge the hydra. Yes, I know, I charge the hydra. |
| bitznarf07-20-07, 09:56 AM | I think your failing to notice the fact that they're gods They can grant or deny whatever they wish...who are we to stop them? I'm talking about within the D&D gameworld here. |
| mlund07-20-07, 06:50 PM | I'm talking about within the D&D gameworld here. Yes, and the gods within the D&D game world can deny their clerics spells as they see fit. Heck, some deities already have weird mechanical restrictions on their spells - like poor old Vatun, still imprisoned ... The likelihood of a deity's preferences actually restricting a Living Greyhawk character's spell selection beyond Alignment, however, is slim to none. It'd be an interesting plot-point for a module, though ... - Marty Lund |
| bitznarf07-20-07, 07:04 PM | Is that detailed anywhere? I don't recall ever reading it anywhere. |
| cheeky_ktty07-20-07, 09:01 PM | It does look like a ways for you to get to Ratik, but you could hop a train down to ACT or, for a longer trip, to Vic. I did enjoy Melbourne; there's a really good bakery downtown there. What is it, like an 8 hour train ride to ACT? Probably be about 14 hours to Melbourne :/ Well, a train from Armidale to Sydney takes all day (from 9am to about 6pm). Then its about another 3- 4 hours on a bus to get to Canberra, its a long trip- but I'm unaffected by traveling, it doesn't wear me out or any thing. The cost for the train along is about 120. return from Sydney, and thats a fair bit for me. However, I have been seriously considering moving to Canberra some time next year, so I may get to go back to my beautiful Ratik yet. - Metz, theres a fair chance I'll be at Winterfest. It all depends on my budget, though it should be ok. I'm also trying to get to Draigcon up in Brisbane. |

See you at the con! - Kat If you are moving the Canberra thats a really good idea, Armidale is a bit boring in any case, though I think the rest of the community there will be crushed to see you leave! Looking forward to catching up if you do make it. |
| Puggle Halfwine07-21-07, 09:28 AM | Britt, Britt! Your loyal minions cry out- feed us the precious information! Knowledge of the kobold-ness which awaits us! Knowledge of the anti-cheese which we shall employ to spread the word of Kurtulmak into the Flanesse! Yes, we will educate the masses about the vicious betrayal by Garl Glittergold, of how he tried to murder our innocent race for doing nothing than out-achieving him! Oh, the misfortunes which have been laid upon us by those slimy little guttersnipes. Yes, the gnomes- they have lied to you all! Kurtulmak was the innocent victim of a barbaric, cruel deception. Garl, home wrecker and destroyer, is nothing but an aspect of... I dare not speak his name! Sufficient enough to say, he is a MOST despicable deity. We will have revenge, o Britt, whose magnificent radiance doth shine down upon us unworthy plebs like the burning sun! A sun which does blind us and sear our eyes like the hottest halfling chilli, occasionally causing us severe bouts of nausea and "the runs", but such discomforts are far outweighed by the sheer pleasure of basking in the splendorous radiance which is your divine light, o Britt! Please, please- answer the desperate pleas of your peoples! |
| Britt07-21-07, 12:26 PM | Nice new pic, Puggle. I can't give out the card details until they start arriving to people in the mail. Luckily, that should be any day now. I can, though, say that you can't worship Kurtulmak :) |

| cheeky_ktty07-22-07, 02:32 AM | Firstly, Yay! We shall have kobolds soon!!! Secondly, Metz, yes, I think the Armidalians will miss me a bit. I'm practically the only reason there is any D&D happening there, so the loss of games should give them something to grieve about- even if it isn't me directly :D I was gonna leave Armidale eventually anyway. And there are far worse locations in the U.S. -6 Celsius is cold in Australia. There is a total lack of proper insulation, and central heating is unheard of. Couple that with the fact that the air is very moist in the winter, you have a bone-chilling temperature. Then mix that with the pain of 45 degree days with the same 100% humidity, and add to that a lack of decent air conditioning. I come from Wollongong originally, and moved to Sweden, here it gets down to -15 degrees in the winter, and people always ask me 'why move from sunny Australia to freezing Sweden'. It's colder at home in the winter. Here, it's a pleasant 21 degrees inside all winter long. In Australia it's cold because the cold is inescapable - gas/electric heaters just don't cut it. As for the conversation, I'm all for Kobolds, but where's this Greyhawk Ruins document already? It's Monday already, it's been a week. |
