Rewards, or just marketing? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Last year we (me + spouse) got Eberron type rewards cards from the RPGA, in spite of the fact it's clear from our rewards point tracker we don't play Eberron. I wrote WotC and asked if I could exchange them for anything (the answer was: "No.").

This year we get more Eberron cards, again without having ever played a game of it (Why? Marketing's idea? ). I've been to several cons this year in my state, and played many other LG games with people all over my state. The general consensus is nearly everyone hates the Eberron cards. They feel gypped.

My question is this: Is this dislike of Eberron cards just local to my state or is this the common reaction throughout all Living Greyhawk players everywhere?
Please post your opinion (or those of your area): yah or nah, on how you feel about getting Eberron cards as a Living Greyhawk player.
Your response will not only satisfy my curiosity, but provide WotC valuable feedback that they can use in designing future rewards cards! Thank you. :)

I play both, but understand the frustration.

Really, the only real way to deal with it is to sell the cards on the net. Use the money for something helpful to your game.

I play in Mark of Hereos and Living Greyhawk and even played quite a bit of Green Regent. I have always sold my cards, even the ones useable in LG because I use the money to purchase books and minis.

Yea,

I'm not a fan of Eberron myself, and I started getting them in the mailings just like everyone else despite having not played any Mark of Heroes. It was the same way before when everyone was getting Green Regent cards. It's got to be a marketing plan, but I don't mind. They're free cards. You can use some in LG. Not much to complain about. Maybe some LG cards would be cool, but its not really in the style of the game.

I've since started playing Mark of Heroes, but only because someone offered to run it and I couldn't say no to 4 reward points. Either way, I'm indifferent as to what comes in the mail. That would be different if we had to pay for our RPGA memberships like we used to, but since its free, I don't mind.

Of course it is just marketing. I'm more shocked that anyone doesn't understand and accept this than hearing people aren't thrilled with the cards.

As for complaints changing things, don't expect it to. Eberron is the campaign setting that currently has products being produced for it. Therefore it is the product that gets marketing support in the form of campaign cards. As WotC has absolutely no intention of producing more Greyhawk products to sell, the chances of them deciding to actively support the LG campaign with the cards are either slim or none, with slim being an independent writer that hasn't been given a contract recently.

You are not alone in your dislike of the Eberron Cards. I only play LG and do not have a use for cards that require action points. If you are looking for cards to use, check with the old LGR cards. Many are usable in LG and are quite good. It would be nice if Eberron Set 3 (or 4, whichever they are on) would be a reprint of those cards instead of new ones.

I also play no Eberon based RPGA games, I dislike the psyonics and that has turned me off of several campaigns. I have a stack of eberon cards and they are gathering dust. Of the 20+ cards I have recieved to date... I have 2 that I can use without borrowing other cards from other players... I got the uprgrades to 2 cards thereby my total actual usable cards is 4. Grrr

I'll take 'em. :D

My biggest problem with the cards is the same as with the MoH modules - ridiculously bad editing.

It's a promotion. WOTC wants you to play Eberron, so they give you Eberron stuff. Since they own the campaign setting, they make money off of it. Greyhawk is the default setting, and anyone can use it as (I believe) it's under the Open Game License.

If you don't like what you get, sell it on the Internet.

I don't believe that's the case. If you look at the SRD (which is the rules that are under the Open Game License), you'll see that there's no mention of any of the "Greyhawk" info that's in the Core Rulebooks...no mention of the Greyhawk deities, not even any mention of characters like Mordenkainen or Leomund (the "named" spells have had the names removed -- "Mordenkainen's Sword" is "Mage's Sword" in the SRD).

They're pushing Mark of Heroes because they're pushing Eberron books. Greyhawk has been given over to the RPGA for use in Living Greyhawk, and is no longer being supported by new WotC books...and thus, no reason, from a marketing standpoint, to try and drum up interest in Greyhawk.
