| Halworth05-03-05, 08:31 PM | I have a question about Ring of Blades spell. This spell creates a ring of blades around the caster. Recently my War Mage had the Ring up and a fighter[enemy] moved thru a square with the blades in in it, we applied damaged to the fighter. In that same round this fighter moved BACK thru the ring and out the way he came. So we applied damage again. A friend just told me a ruling has been made on the spell, Ring of Blades that damage is applied at the end of MY turn only. So that the entire enemy party could pass through my ring of blades and NO damage would be inflicted, provided no one was within the area of affect at the end of my turn. Does that sound right to anyone? Am I missing something? I think anytime someone enters this Ring of Blades they take damage. Can I get some feed back on this? I searched for a ruling on this but found nothing. Thanks Ring of Blades Pic (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/ca_wpss/completearcane2_1280.jpg) |

It doesn't make sense that someone could walk through it and take no damage as long as they weren't in it when your turn ended. However, I don't get why someone with mobility wouldn't take damage for moving through the ring on multiple occasions during the same turn. |

Presumably the blades "rev up" or something once a round. This was undoubtedly done for balance reasons, as a cleric with, say, travel domain and fly running could pretty much sweep the blade area over all opponents every turn. How a Judge will interpret walking into the blades between the inits of the casters turn will vary from table to table...but I think the best way to rule it would be similar to ice storm...a spell that damages those within it when cast, but sticks around for a round, damaging anybody who enters the area but not doing more damage to those who already have been smacked once. |
