The Honorable Pendergrass queried as to the mechanics of a PC Thief stealing from other PCs, essentially impossible.

What are the mechanics for the same PC Thief to steal from NPCs during the adventure?

Is all gold acquired in such a fashion simply added to the total for the group?

If a particular magic item is lifted, does the PC Thief then gain the ability to use it for the rest of the adventure?

If the item does not appear on the AR, the PC Thief would then not have to purchase the item (i.e. Wand of MM)

Would the value in gold be added to the haul, even if it could not appear on the AR?

Enquiring minds want to know...

I am sure there are other examples.

There is no problem picking stuff from NPC but as with all treasure, at the end it is added to total party treasure. If NPC has a magical item, then you can certainly use it for the rest of the adventure if DM permits.

And if does not appear in the AR, you may not keep it.

Stealing from an NPC essentially falls under the same situations as defateing it in combat, etc. In other words, regardless of what you do, the stealinng won't increase the gold over the APL cap for the party (or for the PC, if he doesn't share), you can't keep the item if it's not on the AR (and even then, you still have to 'purchase' it as normal), etc.

You would be able to use the item during the mod, just like you can with items you strip from defeated enemies, but keep in mind, that, like anything else of this sort, if it's expended before the end of the mod, that items is not considered to be recovered for the party, and is marked off the AR as not available.

In general, as a 'heroic' campaign, rogues trying to steal stuff for themselves only seldom works out well. Better to be a 'team player' type rogue, at least when you sit down at the table.

I was thinking more along the lines of stealing magic items from "friendly" NPCs such as the person who hires you in the first place.

Or even better than stealing....have the Bard convince (insert NPC here) to give over an item for the duration of the adventure.

Not very realistic I know, especially with the outright disdain with which Bards are met by GMs. Bards seem to be a nuiscance or curiosity (off topic I suddenly realize).

Anyway, thanks very much for your replies....quite helpful.

If a rogue did steal, or attempt to steal, an item or gold from an NPC how is getting caught handled? I am sure the NPC isnt going to take the idea of his personal possesions being looted in a good light. I assume he would call for the authorities in most situations, and, when appropriate, the offending PC would be arrested and fined/given jail time or both (possibly spending additional TUs from incarceration and risking removal from the table).

Ideas?

Yes, it would be quite awkward for member of a newly hired (or tasked) group to be caught stealing from their benefactor (great role-playing possibility tho).

The whole idea of being caught is what brought me around to the Bard. One could convince said benefactor that giving up, willingly, of an item is a brilliant tactical manuever AND (insert benefactor name here) should be commended with coming up with the idea! You are wise beyond your years sir!

But...I have noticed that the tables at the conventions do not facilitate roleplaying, especially of a Bard. Literally...read as 'no exaggeration'...every game I have played has gone WELL beyond the alloted time (I have witnesses). Time for a new topic....Fast Talking as a player Feat.
