We have to start the Ruins of Greyhawk arc with 1st level characters.
The big Ruins of Greyhawk module starts at APL8

How are we going to be able to bridge that gap in the time available?

Is there something that requires you to play the Ruins book as soon as it comes out? Chances are we won't have the adaptation available for a while anyway.

Yeah, from what I've heard there's nothing to worry about here at all.

In fact the scuttlebutt rumors that I've heard are that the four mega-adventures in the Ruins Arc will possibly/probably get a PC up to about 8th level... Just in time for the Circle to finish adapting the Expedition hardback into a super-mega-collossal Adapted adventure for our beloved World of Living Greyhawk!

Big hats off to the Circle and everyone involved in the new Arc. I haven't been this excited about making a new character in a long time. :)

silly britt, everything must be played AS SOON as it released, if not as soon as it announced as being in the works! we want it all, and we want it last week! :)

I wasn't even beginning to suggest that.
So far as I know the first of them isn't available yet. My concern is that there may not be enough time to get a character that starts the first one up high enough to play the big one before it retires at the end of 2008.

If the Arc modules are enough to get you at least close then there is no problem but that wasn't the impression I got from what I read so I thought I'd raise it nice and early so I can plan to have that character play a lot of other modules if that's what it takes (or decide early that I'm going to swap characters mid-arc).

What I want to avoid is blithely assuming that the Arc will be playable without any extras, having unused TUs this year and then finding I can't play the conclusion.
With the irregularity of planning LG games it's best to know these things asap.
(and besides if I don't raise it now I'll probably forget)

I'm not sure what level you should be at the end of the arc, but there will definitely be time to play them all and the big book before it retires.

Britt, I asked the following in the LGCS 597 thread but - just in case you missed it - what will be the regional feats for PC generated in the Greyhawk region? It's missing from the table under Expanded Options, p.27.

Any chance you could find out if the rest of the Arc is enough to get a character high enough for the big finale? (and how big the gap is if it exists)

Well if it keeps to that your character that starts the arc is the only one that plays in that arc (I like this idea really) they can easily gauge the exps to get you to 8th level.

If each section 1-4 is equal to 4 rounds approx thats 16 rds woth of Exps and Gold. You could easily have 15,000 exps (6th level) by the end of the arc if not more. If they treat them more like Core Specials you could have enough to hit 8th easily.

After my first 16 mods I was still playing at APL4 regularly. You'd still need to play up alot and get some other mods with the same character to reach L8.

However, it's very unlikely they'll get the RoCG adaptable out before '08 so you have that entire year to play it before it retires or, hopefully, '08 and '09.

If they do them like core specials they are worth 2x the exps and gold for that APL:

* Adventure 1: May release; APL 2 (3600 exps)
* Adventure 2: Gen Con Indy release; APLs 2-4 (3600 or 5400 exps)
* Adventure 3: Gen Con UK release; APLs 2-6 (3600 / 5400 / 7200)
* Adventure 4: Gen Con So Cal release; APLs 2-8 (3600 / 5400 / 7200 / 9000)

So if you played them like this:
APL 2+2+2+2 = 14,400 exps (600 exps shy of 6th level)
APL 2+2+4+4 = 18,000 exps (3000 exps shy of 7th)
APL 2+4+4+6 = 20,600 exps (400 exps shy of 7th)
APL 2+4+6+8 = 25,200 exps (2800 exps shy of 8th level)

Or any combo you can think of in those ranges. So it could be done

The article I read was very clear that they all retired at the end of '08. At any rate it looks like TUs won't be a big problem at least and at least some additional play is going to be desirable (you don't want to go into an APL8 with only 7th level characters).

It seems the big question is: are they treated like Specials for xp?

Two things:

1. The series is designed so you can play all of them, plus a few normal Cores set around the city of GH, and be ready to play the adaptation at APL 8 afterwards.

2. No list of regional feats for City of GH PCs will be in the LGCS. That will come out with the rules for the special story arc later this year.

Later this year. What if people want to play their Greyhawk character in a couple of Intros prior to the 1st Greyhawk mod coming out? How will they know what guidelines to follow or what is available to them?

I though that a 'Greyhawk' domain character had to start with the first of the series, in the same way that the Bright Sands options were only available for people who started a new character with Blight on Bright Sands.

Apparently you only need to be level 1 to play the first one.

...that doesn't necessarily mean that you don't have to start there to benefit form special options though

Only new or 1st-level characters can play in Greyhawk Ruins. (That is the AR for the first adventure must appear in your stack before you reach 2nd-level). If you create a new character for the arc, you can choose the Domain of Greyhawk as your home region.

With Bright Sands you had to have a character that was created at 1st level and play the 1st module. Then other characters could play later modules.

From what has been written on this one it seems that, as above, you can have a 1st level character or a brand new character to play in the arc. And only these characters can play thru the arc.

But once they put out their draft we can see. My area has a couple of new intros I was going to play with my character I plan to use for this plot arc. So was wanting to see if there was anything of interest in the Ruins of Greyhawk book for access etc

Just wanted to tell the Circle that I'm really excited about Ruins of Greyhawk. I'm hoping that the modules have all the continuity of Living Greyhawk, but with the pace and action of Xendrik Expeditions. Not that I want all of Living Greyhawk to be that way, but often I feel that the standard formula ("chance to roleplay" plus 2 minor encounters and 1 major enounter) is somewhat stale.

I want to play the first module online with my new GH PC. Then, while I'm waiting for the AR, I want to play 2 local Intro modules and the upcoming 1st-level ADP (Howling Hordes). That should mess up the system!

I also want world peace, a kobold duskblade, and an LGCS that nobody complains about. :D

[For the record, I'm kidding about everything except world peace.]

I was vaguely contemplating the possibility of playing it online to get a first Dm for our large group but that's just sneaky!

Any word on when the arc-source will be ready? I've got a build I'm itching to play, just waiting to see if I can get in on some of the potential "special rules" which might be allowed, a'la Bright Sands... or special races... or kobolds!

I'm anxiously waiting to see what options there will be. :D Hopefully there will be some new stuff. Maybe even, dare I say, kobold warlocks? :mage:
