Rules ?: Dwarven Monks [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-08-04, 11:31 AM In the PHB, it says that Dwarves can treat a medium load as a light load as far as encumberance because of their stocky nature. Now, monks require that they be carrying a light load in order for their abilities to work. Playing a dwarf, would I be able to carry a medium load and still have my monk powers function correctly? It would make sense to me that they would.

09-08-04, 12:21 PM No. The rule doesn't say your medium load is a light load or is even treated as such. You still suffer arcane spell failure and armor check penalties, but your speed is unaffected.

Х Dwarf base land speed is 20 feet. However, dwarves can move at this speed even when wearing medium or heavy armor or when carrying a medium or heavy load (unlike other creatures, whose speed is reduced in such situations).

09-08-04, 02:54 PM You can still run while under a Med. or Heavy load. That doesn't just apply to dwarves. The only problem is that your run speed drops to x3 instead of x4 with a Heavy load. Being a dwarf just means your speed is pretty much always 20 ft.

09-09-04, 03:33 PM i hate to be the idiot here but im new so please explain, which rule set are you in im assuming 3.5, according to that i was under the illusion that dwarves suffer no penalties for carrying a medium or heavy load. anyone wanna clarify just so i know please?

09-11-04, 12:52 AM no Dwarfs do face a penalty for medium and heavy armor.

For Medium Armor it is just the Action Check Penalty.
For Heavy Armor it is the Action Check Penalty and runs are x3 not x4. Unless you have the Run feat in which case I think you get x4 instead of x5.

As to a Dwarf Monk. I think they lose the Monk Speed bonus when medium or heavily encumbered.
