With just 2 spells (Grease and Blindness/Deafness), you too can be the greased up deaf guy...Try to think of situations in which this would be beneficial...

When your PC is being grappled by the high-level monk as the advanced fiendish monster of X, with more than 10 HD above your character level gets run by the DM who elects to make the mod a challenge by using its Blasphemy even though it's been crossed off the list.

Then the Blasphemy would still kill you. You don't have to hear it, you just have to be in its area of effect.

Now if you are in a grapple with a monk, and somebody trys to Tasha's you, so you don't get out, well then you are just well off.

When you're being grappled by a big nasty with a gaze attack.

Well in that case you'd want to be a greased up blind guy...who is infinitely inferior to the greased up deaf guy...

Visions of T-Rex. Big. Purple. Plushy.

He's singing something, and constant are his efforts as he continually tries to devour me.

I can only thank my lucky stars that I'm the greased up deaf guy.

Unlike the rest of my party, who must suffer through stomach acid and reverberations of classic children's tunes.

Now here's someone who's putting some thought into this!

Do spells like the Power Word chain, Command, or sonic effects, affect you while deafened?

Two answers:

- Harpy Monks
- Bard Tendriculous.

I played a year 5 regional module where our party saw a battle in the distance involving a harpy and some other stuff. My bard told the group to gather 'round...pulled out a thunder stone...and told the group to 'listen closely' (a.k.a. fail your save, if you want to). While I could have countersonged the harpy, deaf is much more safe.

Of course, that made things a bit more complicated when (later on) bad guys wanted to talk with us. Also, the wizard wasn't very happy with the spell failure chance.

As for grease..."There are HOW many Evard's Black Tentacles in there?! Grease me up...I'm goin' in!"

It would be sweet to be a greased up deaf guy if you were being grappled ( +10 to escape artist checks)and someone with 20 hit die was casting blasphemy.

Being grappled.
Being non-chaotic and within the effect of a Word of Chaos. Only Word spells have the extra phrase 'who hears the word'. Dictum and Blasphemy simply have 'within the area'.

The moral of this story? Be Lawful Evil with a thunderstone. :)

When being attacked by a bard (fascinate, charm person) and his grappling buddy.

Or maybe the bastard child of a purple worm and a siren.

When walking along in the woods, wail of the banshee traps followed up by the greater cadaver collector.

Not that I know about this particular circumstance from experience... :shifty:

Well, there was this one time that the party Dwarven Fullplate wearing Tower Shield Carrying tank was SAVED from a green hag "Command"ing him to "Approach" (The "get over here" command word) because he stepped into my sorcerer's patch of grease.
