What will your Snow Elf be like?

Mine will be a Barbarian/Fighter/Champion of Correllon build. He was drawn to Correllon (not often worshipped by Snow Elves,) and then the outside world. More details to follow as I make them up.

I'd also like to declare Kethvin Fera'erlesti as the first member of the Crystalmist Bobsled Team.

I will somehow rise above the stigma of the past three sets I've received and actually get something useful. It will be the option to create a snow elf. I will lovingly craft a detailed history and full level progression. Then halfway through level 2 I will die and not have enough gold to do anything but take a chance on a reincarnate. My beloved snow elf will come back as a gnome. I will cry.

And what do you bet I'll never see one? I have the worst luck with those stupid cards. (Still haven't got a feign surprise).

On a side note, will they be LG legal, or are we looking at Xendrix?

No, I'm not joking. Elves already have a number of good bonuses, and the -2 Con was what kept them balanced. It's incredibly easy to build around a Cha penalty so it is no penalty at all; every other LG race has some balancing factor to counteract its stat bonuses.

Movement speed penalty? I won't argue that dwarves aren't the 'best' race in LG, currently, with humans and wood/grey elves coming up close rivals. But Snow Elves are dwarves that can move faster. Power creep?
bitznarf

03-28-07, 07:03 PM
But this costs a card to do. Perhaps that is the percieved balancing factor. After all, when it comes right down to it, more CON saves your characters life. So can campaign cards.

If you have to 'spend' the card every game, using up one of your other slots, I think this'll be reasonable. If you're stuck in the Crystalmists this'll be super-reasonable, although it might create a slew of Snow Elves who only come out for Cores.

I have a cleric with the cold domain and I plan on rebuking all snow elves at my table. Since I'll always play down and am 5th, I should pretty much rebuke them full time.

You couldn't get me to play an elf if you gave them +2 to all stats.

I think snow elves favored class should be scout though, or ranger.

Regular elves are weak to begin with. The con penalty is annoying, but ultimately results in a difference of 15 hp by 15th level. What can a snow elf do that a regular elf can't? Take one more hit maybe (probably not even that at high levels)? And snow elves have a much harder time with all the charisma based goodies out there. Snow elves are no more "powerful" than any of the other currently allowed races, they just can go in slightly different directions than typical elves...

If they were consistent with the snow elf article in Dragon magazine that introduced them so many years ago, snow elves would be restricted to their own god as they didn't venerate the elven pantheon, or rather, the elven pantheon would proscribe snow elves from it like humans and dwarfs are prevented from worshiping the elven pantheon. You couldn't get your snow elf Champion of Corellon because, frankly, snow elves don't acknowledge him.

I would approve of such a restriction...

what do you need to have done to get this card? how many reward points etc?

(finding out If I have actually scored it or not, lol

I have to agree Snow elvels look better than all the other races. - 2 charisma is extremely easy to work around.

-2 con is a MASSIVE difference. how many con draining effects can kill characters? how many times has that poison done you in?

also paying 6 points for 12 con is a massive difference to paying 6 for 14 con.

in LG con is more important than almost any other stat. Just due to the nature of it.

Think of all the awesome dex based fighters that will come from the snow elves... I can see it now...

Just think of all the awesome Str-based fighters that will ALWAYS overshadow dex-based fighters for the very reason that they're, well, ya know... like better.

Seriously, they're good, but they're not worth freaking out over. The fact that they may be tied to the Crystalmists with no ability to change regions (making them vastly harder to play when everything is effectively a core, and forget about Meta-orgs) just serves to make them less appealing. Not that I wont be making one (and running him through at least a few mods) if I get the card, just that they're not the broken monstrosities that some people seem to be describing them as. They're just a cool race that adds a little flavor and diversity to the PC races.
_metz_

03-29-07, 12:28 AM
Hey I didn't say they were broken, just better than most other races. They bypass a big issue with elves - con.

Not saying str fighters aren't better, just saying that now you don't have to sacrifice con when making a dex elf fighter is all.

Assuming I get the card ( I have lots of reward points - are they based on that, or a specific event???) I will probably make a flavour character rather than an optimised one.

Better than wood elf barbarians or grey elf wizards? Hack, I think they are less powerful than those...

There's a good number of Str/Int Melee builds where Snow Elves are going to shine - anything that requires Combat Expertise, 13-16 Int, and/or is weak on hit points. Spiked Chain Trippers, Rogue Melee Mutts(don't generally work well with Elves due to low hp), Dervishes, Champions of Corellon, Monk builds, etc...

Once you need at least Str 16, Dex 16, Con 12, Int 13, Wis 8, Cha 6, it really turns into this equation:
Would you rather have a +1 modifier to Str 73% of the time and +1 mod to Cha all the time, or a +1 mod to Con and Int all the time. As most of those builds won't use Cha at all, an eventual 18 skill points never hurt anyone, and Con is a very useful stat, I'd take a Snow Elf over a Wood Elf in that case. Especially at levels 8-11 where Wood Elves don't even get the +1 mod to Strength.

12 Con for a frontliner *shudder*. But no rant again today.

Those are the minimum scores a Wood Elf build that involves melee is likely to have. They get killed by the Con score even worse if they try to go higher than 12 compared to the Snow Elf...Snow Elf is quite good.
Jay_Ibero_911

03-29-07, 09:29 PM
You know, I don't know why everyone is so concerned about the con score. An elf will only have 15 less hp than any other character at 15th level, or 30 less than a dwarf. That's not even enough to take one more hit at that level. With +6 Amulet of Health being open access, as 12 starting con is more than enough to be survivable. Plus there are the options of Improved Toughness, an boosted con through dragon disciple if you want to go that route.

Its not always about hitpoints.

What two saves result in death - fort and will.

Aint many reflex or die things, sure some do a lot of damage, but its not reflex or DIE.

Con drain, Saves, etc all make a massive difference.

If you don't beleive me make a con 10 character in LG and see how long it lasts. especially if its a front liner.

Con 10 is definately danger zone...but fortunately no LG races have a -4 con adjustment, so everyone can at least afford a 12. I DO have a 12 starting con wood elf front liner, and he's done just fine. The con difference again is just a difference of +1 against most races or +2 compared to dwarves, easily compensated for by multiclassing, barbarian rage, and with the availability of magic items. The only area that that -2/+2 con makes a noticeable difference is when it comes to con damage/drain, and even then, it's a difference of 2 points, or 4 points compared to dwarves. Could it mean the difference between life and death? Yes. Is it often likely to? Not really. Snow Elves are ideal for a Fighter/Swashbuckler/CHampion of Correllon mix, and while they will certainly be effective, they are no more powerful than anything else currently available.

While I agree that it's rough for a PC in LG to have a low Con, it CAN be done. A friend of mine in the BK has a retired 18th level Paladin with a 10 Con - and he didn't shy away from combat. While I wouldn't advise a player to have a low Con for his PC, I have to give a nod to those who can run with it well.

That being said (and from what I hear about the new card), I think the new race will be an interesting addition to LG. Just what it is set up to be - a sort of cool thing that regular LG players can create if they've been playing RPGA for a while.

oh don't get me worng, I appear to have accidently piggybacked on other comments, I don't think they are overpowered, I just think -2 cha is much less of a penalty than -2 con. At least in LG where talking isn't always an option.

I think they will be a fun race to play for sure. I want mine to be a frost mage, just for flavour, even though a grey elf is a better option. I have a regional metaorg that will allow access, but this causes concerns with the fact that the starting region for snow elves is crystalmists... not sure how this will work really, particularly when it comes to meta orgs etc and changing regions.

While I agree that it's rough for a PC in LG to have a low Con, it CAN be done.

There are a lot of builds that would naturally like to have the following:
Be Medium Sized without a movement penalty
Not have a Con Penalty so as to take lower hit dice.
Have a Dex benefit
Don't need Charisma
Need Int

Compare the following three Rogue 15 stats:
Human
Str 14, Dex 16, Con 14, Int 14, Wis 8, Cha 8
Snow Elf
Str 14, Dex 16, Con 14, Int 16, Wis 8, Cha 6
High Elf
Str 14, Dex 16, Con 14, Int 14, Wis 8, Cha 8

The High Elf is clearly worse than the other two builds. But what does the Snow Elf get compared to the human:
Same hp and same skill points
+1 to all Int-based skills
-1 to all Cha-based skills
Proficiency with Longbow/Longsword
Elvish for free
+2 to Spot/Listen/Search(+3)
+2 vs Enchantments, Immune to Sleep
Low-Light Vision

Pretend there was a feat available for the human rogue that let him get all that - would you take it? I'd certainly think strongly about it...

Great example Mommy. I do think you understate the value of the extra feat though. It can help qualify for PrCs three levels earlier or give whirlwind attack or a similar 'feat tree' feat three levels earlier. The Elven racial abilities are excellent but the flexibilty of the extra feat, particularly for a class that doesn't get bonus feats, shouldn't be underestimated.

I just used the word 'feat' lots...:)

I'm only thinking strongly ;)

Just as note - I'm being deliberately suboptimal for the Snow Elf - the only real reason I'm giving him a 16 Int is to exactly match up the benefits with the Human to show the effect of the 'feat'

Take a 16 Str, I don't need Weapon Finesse. Take a 12 Str/14 Wisdom, I've got very good Will Saves and Spot/Listen checks. 18 Dex, hit more often with the bigger bow.

Etc...

Snow elves are cool but I don't think they break the game.

Snow Elven Rogue:
Hit to cha means that the person with the most skill points to dump into social skills probably won't. This might take out the diplo/gather info person in a four-man table.

Snow Elven Finesse Fighters:
Elven front-liners usually take a double hit. Their con and a racial ability becoming useless (weapon prof). A snow elf only has a single hit, the wasted racial bonus. Rangers would be nice but handle animal would suffer. I can see some nice monks.

Snow Elven spellcasters:
More hps. Yay! This would be a nice combo. Sorcerers are right out though, as are bards. Clerics will be hard (fewer TUs each day, so less divine feats). But they'll make some nice wizards with a chance at livin' and a decent AC.

And they'll live slightly longer than their high elven counterparts. (Based on luck/"one extra hit some of the time" can mean a lot) I have a sorcerer who lost only TWO HP and he has felt that already. (He's level 4)

But yeah, a high dex elven rogue with no con penalties? Fun fun fun in the sun sun sun.

Plus, as a balance issue, they will always spend 2 TUs on mods, can't get metaorg access (As the crystalmist region is supposed to be fixed) and you must always have the campaign card to play the snow elf.

But it's a fair trade. Although you could just play a stupid (but strong) wood elf.

I posted this on the LG Yahoo Group but thought it would fit here as well:

Since the Crystalmist Mts are now a playable region, and Snow Elves a
playable race, it stands to reason they should have regional feats.
Have they already been decided apon and if so where can I find the
list? If not may i suggest the following:

Snow Elf: Elflore, Vatun's Touch
Crystalmist Mts: Mountian Fighter, Drift Walker, Lays of the Norther
Adept, World Weary

Those all seemed the most appropriate to me.

Snow Elf: Elflore, Vatun's Touch
Crystalmist Mts: Mountian Fighter, Drift Walker, Lays of the Norther Adept, World Weary

Those all seemed the most appropriate to me.I disagree that Vatun's Touch or Lays of the Northern Adepts is appropriate.

Vatun is a specific regional deity. He is the patron of the northern Suelii barbarians. Different race, opposite side of the Flanaess, Vatun's Touch doesn't work as a regional feat to me.

And with Lays of the Northern Adepts, PC knows the poems of the Ur-Flan sorcerers, again, wrong race, wrong culture, wrong part of the continent (Crystalmists aren't in the north).

Although, because the snow elf lives in the Crystalmists, Giantkiller probably is an excellent choice as the Crystalmists are infested with giants of all varieties. There really hasn't been an update on what happened with the Snow Elf civilization since the original article all those many years ago, but I have to imagine they tussled with the surging giants of the Crystalmists since then.

I'll have to read the article again, but if the valley elf is any guide, (insular, defensive, reclusive) maybe snow elfs should get Defensive Expert as well.

So my list would be

Snow Elf: Defensive Expert, Elflore, World Weary (I'll have to re-read the article before I'm sure about this regional feat)

Crystalmist Mts: Defensive Expert, Driftwalker, Giantkiller, Mountain Fighter

Excilent point. I would have known this if I had researched the feats beyond looking in HF for 'cold' regional feats...but yes, Giant Slayer was in the back of my mind aswell though not so much on Defensive Expert. they seem to have kept themselves safe via reclusion (World Weary), and magic (Elflore), not so much with defensive prowise. Also, as far as I can tell Races only get 2 racial feats each, where Rgions can have as many, or few, as they like.

Regions that are so familiar with the worst of the worst that it just doesn't faze them any more. (Ahlissa, BK, Bone March, Geoff, Iuz, North Kingdom, Pomarj, Rovers, Scarlet Brotherhood, Sea Princes, Shield Lands, Sterich, Tenh.) The snow elfs just don't have that history.

And the Valley Elves and Valley of the Mage aren't militarily defense experts either, as far as I remember, which threw me off... maybe I'll have to look at the LGG again. Here is what Dragon #319 gives as valley elfs regional feats; Elflore, Defensive Expert, Gnomelore, Mountain Fighter. If it must be cut down to only two, then Elflore and Mountain Fighter are the best options for snow elfs.

Also, as far as I can tell Races only get 2 racial feats each, where Rgions can have as many, or few, as they like. Not according to the articles, which is what I based my recommendations, but maybe according to what the Circle limit it to.

Upon further consideration

True, world weary is more of a jaded flavor then reclusive one.

The only reason I said 2 feats per race is from when I looked at the list on the new LGCS there were only 2 given for each race, leading me to believe thats all they were allocated. That new list seems pretty good, is short. Maybe Boarder Guard could fit the region, for scouts and military outposts.

I have a level 9 front-line wood elf monk/ranger with 12 CON. If I had taken improved toughness it would be the same as a 10 CON character.

He died once at level 3 beign taken down to -20. I don't think the 3 extra hits would have saved him, if my math is OK.

As far as saves are concerned, his regular fort and will saves are 12 and 11. Against spells they're 13 and 12. Next level, with tattoed monk, they will be 14 and 13.

Arguing you need 14 CON instead of 12 to survive high level fort saves seems less than optimal, but maybe that's just me.

I think having a higher than 12 Con is better because of monsters that damage Con on their attacks.

If a monster does 1d6 Con damage and crits you for 2d6 Con damage, it could very well outright kill a 12 Con character in one hit. (I have seen this happen.)

13 Con is absolute minimum for me.

As opposed to a Shadow's 1d6 Str damage (2d6 on a crit) - which results in a spawn and the need for a ressurection. I know which one my Str5 Wiz is terrified of.

Polymorph =used= to be a good defense of course. Str boost and non-humanoid so immune to becoming spawn. Oh well... :weep:

I think we all want to play a kobold, just for fun...

I know I've always wanted to play an Orc Bard with Bagpipes...

I do have a certain mate who wants to play a pixie... (always has)

Is there any actual published information on the Snow Elves in the world of Greyhawk? I'm looking to make one but I'd like to check into the source material that's available to write up a character background and have an idea of the flavor of the cold moutain region they hail from.

Thanks,

There is one old Dragon Magazine issue. I can't recall the issue # unfortunately. That's the first and only place snow elfs had seen print.

You can also find a little bit in Frostburn. Can't recall the page number off hand.

I don't have Frostburn, so I am curious, do the snow elves get access to Cold Endurance similar to the Bright Sands getting Heat Endurance? I noticed both feats are NONC.

Snow elves do not get any cold endurance abilites. The ONLY difference between snow elves and high elves is their ability score adjustments-- +2dex/-2char instead of +2dex/-2con. They build ice-city shelters in the farthest reaches of the region and rarely venture out. They have white eyes and white wispy hair.

I hope they are planning on writing some modules for the Crystalmist mountains area the home region of the Snow Elves. IT would be neat to open up some access to things from Frostburn that are NONC, alot of them would really fit the flavor of the Snow Elves in my opinioin.

At least they should create a document similiar to the Brightsands one that allows PCs from that region access to some of the flavor items/classes/feats that are typcially only found there.

I found out about the article through Google. I then went to the paizo web site to buy a back issue, but they had none. I then went to see if Paizo had a PDF to download. They didn't. I wound up buying the issue on eBay. Its a 2E article, but it still provides quality Greyhawk flavor.

In 2E, they were really tall with males reaching 7' in height and females reaching 6'4". The article states that "the appearance of the snow elves has perhaps given the other elven races reason to doubt their lineage as being truly pure." They were "very thin," but "

Here's how I decided that I'm going to focus where my snow elf plays. With no player home region to reduce TU costs, and with more and more ADP mods coming out, I'm going to use my Snow Elf for those extra playing opportunities. I'll start with Scourge of the Howling Horde. If and when Barrow of the Forgotten King, The Sinister Spire and Fortress of the Yuan-ti become available, I'll move my snow elf right along.

I suspect that many other players are using a similar line of reasoning to play snow elves in Greyhawk Ruins.

Indeed, I am creating two snow elves: one for Ruins (Scout) and one for Scourge (Ranger).

Was there an answer given to the Regional Feats for Snow Elves: a good question?

Cheers
