I just read in one of the posts how a guy had a friend play one of his characters while he played another one IN THE SAME GAME. Is this legal? I didn't think I could give someone one of my characters to play in a game.

Thanks,

Not even remotely legal in the LG campaign, and I can't think of any other RPGA campaign in which it would be.

The closest I have seen to this is one player let his wife run his character's cohort. He did coach her a lot though. Other than that, reporting the table should balk at reporting the player's RPGA # more than once. I have also seen people with pre-generated first level characters but never played give them to a new player to run as their own.

Well, it would be two RPGA #s, but one character's characters (since characters are not "linked" to specific RPGA #s, and in LG you don't even report characters).

As for playing a cohort, as a judge I wouldn't have an issue with it, since the cohort would be played by the char anyhoo, and the wife wouldn't get an AR or anything...Actually a decent idea for a couple where one doesn't get to play often, so you can keep the characters near the same level...

So I could have me and three friends play all four of my characters as long as different RPGA #'s were on the AR's? Then all I would need to do is find a friend who could play certain characters of mine that need something off an AR that I like. Take for instance, I could have 3 buddies play Water The Meadows with my three characters who didn't play it jsut to get the wicked AR. That seems like something the RPGA should look into making harder.

Yeah but you have to realize that judges will get suspicous if the AR's for your characters have different numbers. And if each of your character's has the same ability/cool item, then someone will see that something's up.

No, since your name and RPGA # should be on the top of every one of your characters ARs...

My assumption is that this player's friend didn't have a character of the appropritate level, and to make the table legal (and survivable) he played another player's character, it was reported with the separate RPGA #s (to be legit in the system) and only one of the two characters took the AR...

but what a hgue loophole this is. There is a mod here in Ket that gives you a free +1 item, another that bumps one stat. I could have a friend run another one of my characters through those mods. This seems like a potentially big problem. How would a DM catch either of those?

Geez, you guys can get free +1 items? Man, all I can get around here in Iuz's Border States area is a no-gp adamantine weapon, and even then I gotta spend a calendar year trying to avoid aided, true striking followers of Iuz... I need to cross the border to Ket more often...

Wow, sounds like you guys have it easy.

I have a hard time getting anything decent.

Let's see how easy you think you have it the first time you hear a DM say, "Does a 42 hit you?"... at APL 4...

Ouch! I think that has beaten the I've had so far at APL 4.

Yeah... my bard learned at a very early level... when you see a shiny weapon that has the unholy symbol of Old Wicked on it, you should probably leave it where it is... (good thing it's a year three mod, so I can talk about it freely)

By comparing the previous AR to the one he's signing... and noticing that the player name and RPGA numbers are different.

Well, the adamantine weapon is more expensive and not normally available without campaign documentation, so it's actually a better item...

The characters must start with 0 xp. Once they play those characters, the character belongs to your friend and only they can play that character from now on. You merely created that character and gave it to them. You can create an identical character and play it yourself, but it will also start with 0 xp. If the character has more than 0 xp, they cannot run your character.

I understand that. I know how the rules work. I was just comenting on another post that a guy mentioned that he had done that. I know it's wrong but lets be honest, I have NEVER had a DM check my previous AR's unless it related to something about a curse or a bonus I get because of a previuos MOD, such as because I helped these people I don't pay upkeep when I am in a certain town.

The DM should check your Previous AR just to make sure you carried the numbers over correctly if nothing else.

The key word there is *should*. I don't play a whole lot of LG, but when my DM at GenCon SoCal a couple of weeks ago did this, it was the first time I'd ever seen it done.

I play a lot of LG, between 7 PCs I have over 225 AR's, and I've never seen it done either.

I've only played about a third as many games, and I'd estimate that 50-60% have had the prior ARs at least glanced at. Maybe it's dependent on the local judge pool.

It varies from place to place. Most of the time, judges allow the players to be on the honor system (it would in fact be very easy to cheat in many cases). And if all he does in cheat in the privacy of his own little gaming group and doesn't have any contact with the outside LG community, it will probably go unnoticed. But as soon as he starts playing with people outside his ring of accomplices, or starts going to cons, odd things will start to crop up when judges start comparing mental notes ("Say, didn't X say he had that favor with his bard character a few tables ago?" etc.).

It's really not worth it, IMHO. Eventually, somebody will probably notice something odd and start paying more attention, and then things get hairy for the character/player.

I always ask for the previous AR as well when I am DMing, and most of my group do too. In fact, a quick audit is as likely to benefit honest (if ditzy) players as to detect fraudulent ones, if not more so. I know that I for one have sometimes copied the "starting XP" from a previous AR over to the "starting XP" of the next one, thereby dropping all the XP from the previous module, without noticing until it was pointed out to me. But this may just be idiosyncratic incompetence :embarrass .

We have a rather close-knit, if extended, group at the venue I play at, so I generally don't bother checking ARs. I will ask to see access to unusual items, and most players are prepared to present ARs with non-standard without even being asked.
I've also encountered another aspect, that of questioning certain super-power combos. I've seen most of them, so I generally just shrug when someone tells me they have an excessive AC, or Str, or what not, and just ask for the general power play to be identified. I know other DMs will do extensive checks of such things.
I focus more on in session shenanigans, repeat die rolling and the like. After a few audit incidents most players are well aware of how bad it will be if they get sleazy on their ARs, and stick with playing by the rules.

I've heard of regions doing audits. If you're caught you could have the AR's ripped up or get sanctions from the RPGA.

I've done it before - going to the extent of making a player complete the five incompleted ARs he had before awarding him the new AR. Don't think I didn't get some pretty terse looks and comments - because I did.

I can see the temptation to ignore it. Mods more often than not run long - and skipping the review of the ARs is one of the easiest things to do; but I don't do it.
