I am playing a sorcerer in LG, and am about to hit 6th lvl. I am trying to figure out what my next feat will be, but I am torn. I know that the Complete Archane in November, so I will have plenty of new options for my lvl 9 feat. In the meantime. What is the best to take?

I don't expect to multi-class and I have already taken 'combat casting', 'improved initiative', and 'still spell'.

I do more battlefield augmentation, and less attacking (lots of Magic Missles, though.) My first level 3 spell will be Haste.

I was thinking about Energy Affinity, but I don't have the pre-req's.

I was thinking about Heighten Spell, but I don't know if it's worth it since I am not a strictly offensive blaster.

I was also thinking about some of the other meta-magic feats, but I wonder if I might waste a slot since I might be able to buy rods of metamagic from the meta-orgs someday.

Craft Item feats seem worthless for a sorcerer.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't take heighten spell, since I don't think it would be useful to you. As far as metamagic feats go, my preference is Extend spell. That works well with your buff spells. A metamagic road lets you affect three spells per day, which means one spell per combat in the typical LG day.

Where do you do most of your play? If you frequently have 4-5 player tables, leadership is a good feat with your high Charisma.

Do you meet the qualifications for Mage of the Arcane Order? If so, you may want to waste a feat on cooperative spell in order to hugely broaden your spell access. (This also works well with magic item creation).

Finally, there is spell penetration. I started to run into monsters with SR at APL 6/8, but I'd talk to other local players to see if this is true of your region.

Are metamagic rods common in LG? I am in Dyvers region

I usually play with a full table, so leadership isn't really helpful with the 6 player max.

What book has Mage of the Arcane Order? Complete Arcane?

I've seen some spell resistance, but not much at APL 6. Of course, that will probably change very soon.

I'd agree with Spell penetration, as a Wiz player I know that although it isn't usefull all the time when that Vrock turns up you will be much happier.

I DMed last night an encounter with demons and both mage types were pretty much stumped and reduced to firing off magic missiles which made the fight very tough. A couple of decent spells would have really hurt my bad guys.

Beating the SR makes you massively more effective but is only useful if you see yourself actually casting attack spells in the future and Sorc types make great artillary.

Right now, my sorcerer is mostly support, but I know that, when we start playing APL 10, my little weakling is really going to have to step to the plate.

Spell penetration may be the thing, (get it out of the way early since I know I will need it later.) Maybe at 9th would be the time for Energy Affinity: Acid, or something like that.

Other options that have been suggested since I started this were 'consecrate spell' (my sorcerer is chaotic good), spell focus: evocation, and sudden metamagic, though the last one is limited (and I don't really understand what it does, so I will need to check the book for that.)

I wouldn't say that they are common, although I have three lesser rods (silent, extend and empower) and have access to others including standard ones. I suspect they are going to be more common at higher APL's.

Mage of the Arcane Order is in Tome and Blood. Whether it will be in Complete Arcane no one knows.

Another good option may be Empower Spell, since you'll have all those 3rd level spell slots, you could use some of 'em for Empowered Magic Missiles. (3d4+3)*1.5 is nothing to sneeze at.

How about "Arcane Discipline" from Complete Divine? (As long as you have at least an 11-12 Wisdom).

Depending on which deity you worship you could pick up some nice low level spells. Healing Domain is one of the best; add Cure Light Wounds to your known spells and never be reliant on having a cleric at the table (also, you can now use Wands of CLW as well!)

Remember you can swap one of your 0 or 1st level spells when you level.

OR

"Transdimensional Spell" from Complete Divine.
You effectively add the [Force] descriptor to any spell you cast (for 1 spell level). Works great on Scorching Ray, as it lets you inflict some significant damage compared to Magic Missile.

Because sorcerors have a limited selection of spells, they rarely have the spells required to take advantage of item creation.

A wizard can learn secret page from a scroll purely to craft a Bocob's Blessed Book. A sorceror can't afford to waste a valuable spell slot on secret page. I don't know if the Circle has ever stated whether scrolls can be used in item creation. This would make things easier for a sorceror, but he needs to buy a scroll for each day the item takes to create, so it's more expensive.

I'm pretty sure the core rules say that scrolls can be used.

For enhancement spell extend spell and then persistant spell would be your best bet IMO. For tactical spell I perfer a rod of Widen.

Persistent Spell isn't legal in Living Greyhawk, although it is likely to return in its Forgotten Realms version (+6 levels) when Complete Arcane is released.

if you are in an area of the campain world where you have Mage of the Arcane Order as a P class I'd suggest taking the prereqs for that... Co-op spell feat and as a sorc you need arcane preperation which will let you mem spells with meta magic feats like heighten and extend... this class takes the limitations away of being a sorc in a sense that you have accesses to spells out side of your normal slots... once you get the level needed for spell pool

It was my understanding that Sorcerer's can not take that prestige class because they do not "prepare" spells. They just have them, and pop them off whenever they decide to wiggle a finger.

The CY 592 Adventure "Escape From Tenh" had a Lesser Metamagic Rod of Silence, and there are a few other currently playable adventures that I have seen with rods in them. I don't, however, remember seeing any in the Dyvers regional mods that I have played.

I suggest that if you have 10,000gp lying around and 2 free time units to play "A Man With Nothing". You'll understand when you see the cert.

Oroborous- currently making his way around the Nyr Dyv counter-clockwise in the hopes that he can claim citizenship in Dyvers, Greyhawk, CoU, BK, and Furyondy before he reaches retirement.

I think that this is why they need the Arcane preparation feat to take MotAO

Both 'Arcane Preperation' and 'Mage of the Arcane Order' are listed as 'limited' in the LGCS 3.0. What does 'have campaign documentation' mean in this case. Would my sorcerer have to have met some MotAO during an adventure, and impressed them into letting him join the group?

Basically yes.

During scenarios you may meet someone that can teach you the feat or you can join a regional organisation that can teach you the feat.

The PrC might be part of one of your regional orgs.

In Onnwal, for example, members of The Aerie can learn the feat from a fellow member and the PrC is availible through The Academy of Delleb near Longbridge.

Ask your regional Triad how this is done in your region.

Cheers

I'm hoping you mean you don't plan on switching to another main class. I don't see any reason for any sorcerer to stay a sorcerer forever. I'd sacrifice familiar advancement for almost any full spellcasting PrC. I'd check into seeing if any are available in Dyvers and pick any feats required to get into them.
