First, if I have combat reflexes and an opponent makes a full attack, trying to grapple me without the improved grapple feat, do I have one attack of opportunity or one per grapple attempt ? Another question about spiked armor. Can you buy an armor with masterwork spikes by paying 300 extra gps, or are every masterwork spiked armor considered to have masterwork spikes ? Can I buy an armor with spikes crafted in a special material or do I need to have the full armor in this material to have the spikes in this material ? Tungar, the french fighter. |
| honeynuggets03-17-04, 09:39 AM | PHB p.137 "This feat does not let you make more than one attack for a given opportunity, but if the same opponent provokes two attacks of opportunity from you—such as by moving out of a threatened square and then casting a spell in a threatened square—you could make two separate attacks of opportunity (since each one represents a different opportunity). Moving out of more than one square threatened by the same opponent in the same round doesn’t count as more than one opportunity for that opponent. All these attacks are at your full normal attack bonus." Good question. The PHB flat out says that: Move Opportunity + Move Opportunity = Only one AOO. So the Type of Opportunity seems to be the limiting factor. Since the AOOs are being spawned from the same Type of Opportunity (Grapple Opportunity + Grapple Opportunity) then you don't get more than one AOO against him. Spikes are extras added to armor so they are a whole separate thing. PHB p.124 "An enhancement bonus to a suit of armor does not improve the spikes’ effectiveness, but the spikes can be made into magic weapons in their own right." If spikes can be made into magic weapons (including all the various enhancements flaming, frost, etc.) then the same magical process which allows them to be affixed to mundane armor can be used to affix spikes of other materials such as adamantine or darkwood, etc. if you get access to that special material that is... |

The ONLY exception is moving through multiple threatened squares. Since, at the begining of any Grapple attempt you provoke, you would get one attack for each opportunity (assuming you have not used up all of your AoOs). The rule honeynuggets quoted simply means that you do not get 2 attacks for each opportunity. only 1 attack per opportunity. And moving through multiple threatened squares only = 1 opportunity per opponent. No matter how many threatened squares they go through. |
| honeynuggets03-18-04, 08:06 AM | I read it in the PHB. The "Move out of threatened space" Opportunity and the "Casting a spell" in a threatened space Opportunity count as Different opportunities. The Move out of threatened space and Move out of other threatened spaces do not count as Different opportunites. It's right there on p. 137 PHB Some people think that a full attack of grapple attempts counts as different opportunities. Other people think that a full attack of grapple attempts counts as the same type of opportunity. Both views have enough credibility to make this question need clarification by WoTC. They included two examples in the description (Move+Cast and Move 5ft (not step)+ Move) which is good but it seems they need to include more examples. For instance (Grapple + Grapple as part of a full attack) |
