I am sure this has been answered in many threads, but I don't want to search through all of them.

Suppose you want something made out of a special material, does this usually come in the form of a specific item, like the mithril chain shirt I am wearing now, or does it come in a more general form, like you have access to one metal item made of adamantine?

Does this apply to non-PHB items like, say, a set of mithril heavy plate, or a mithril shield gauntlet?

Both. Access usually comes in two forms: items found and favours.

Items found are always specific items, and often magical (like a +1 Mithril Chain Shirt - doesn't give access to the non-magical version).

Favours vary - I've seen a number that give access to x items made from metal y, and others that give access to items x,y,z where some of these are made from special materials.

How frequent is this? I'm saving up money for an animated shield and I am wondering if maybe I should be buying some other items first. If it is a favor, I guess I can start saving once I get access to a mithril heavy shield/mithril anything.

Depends a bit on what you're looking for. I don't think I've seen bottom-box access to anything other than a Mithril Chain Shirt, so I don't think you need to save in order to avoid loosing it. A +1 Animated Mithril Heavy Shield costs a *lot* of money (17k+?) - you're almost certainly better buying individual items first to boost your AC - A Ring of Prot +2 and a +3 on your armour is only 17k.

As a guide, a quick look shows 3 mithril shirts in the bottom box, 1 elven chain favour, 1 value capped metal favour, 1 general metal favour, 1 *extremely* nice mithril favour, plus a couple more I remember out of about 65 ARs

Frequently the mods blurb will suggest ones that could have favour access. A good number of the above are still active, so you'll probably see what you want if you play enough.

No, it should be closer to 10k. The shield itself is 1020 and the enchantment is a total of a +3 enchantment (+1 to make it magical and the +2 for the animated quality.)

Yes I can and will be purchasing other armor increasing items. The main reason for asking about access is to see if I want to be saving because I already have a favor that will make the shield animated, I just don't have a shield that will not hurt my character's mobility. As for buying other items, I would much rather pay 10k for a floating shield and +3 to AC than buy a ring of protection +3 for 18k or buy a ring +2 for 8k and up my armor from +1 to +2 for 3k. I could go +2 on the armor and get an amulet of natural armor and a ring of protection (each of +1) for 7k. We'll see where I am when I have 7k.

Bah, I thought it was a +3 enchantment. If you're looking to make it Mithril to remove some of the penalties, I'd wait for access unless you are really hurting for AC.
