| GreatSiron04-06-06, 06:03 PM | I was wondering what kinds of special materials any of you have run across, and how often. I'm asking this because I really want to gain access to a certain metal, but have never heard it mentioned on the boards. So I'm just wondering what kinds of special metals you guys have come across. |
| Iswald04-06-06, 10:54 PM | Thinaum once. Blue ice full plate once. Mithril quite a bit, almost all just chain shirts. Adamantine several times (including regional access to battleaxes - played that with the wrong character). Susalian chainweave once at a higher APL than I played. |

Adamantine several times (including regional access to battleaxes - played that with the wrong character). Susalian chainweave once at a higher APL than I played. Wait a minute. Thinaum?! The soul stealing metal? We can get access to that? I hope that wasn't a regional mod, caused I'd sure like to get ahold of that. And what is Blue Ice? |
| JohnduBois04-06-06, 11:41 PM | OK... here's what I remember: 1. Adamantine - I think four times. Once it was at no GP cost, but cursed me. 2. Mithral - a lot. Of all kinds. Full plate, breastplate, elven chain, heavy shield, buckler, and a couple blanket accesses. 3. Starmetal - once. 4. Thinaun - Twice, once attached to a specific weapon. I think that is all I've seen, but it's been a while since I've slept, so I may be forgetting something. |
| paigeoliver04-06-06, 11:44 PM | I have seen Thinuan a couple times, but why would you want it? It is insanely pricey and I can't think of any decent reason why a Living Greyhawk character would want to fork out that kind of cash for one. It isn't like this is a home game where you can kill the BBEG for good with your Thinuan weapon. You'd have to die 8 or more times to make up the "savings" on raise deads. Adamantine. A few times. Mithral. Plenty of times. My main character has a mithral chain shirt. |
| redgamer04-06-06, 11:46 PM | I can't think of any special metal that hasn't been available from a core mod. |
| boogahwoof04-07-06, 01:50 AM | ive senn adamantine a few times mithral a bunch starmetal once access to hellforged weapons just recently and astral driftmetal but it was a full plate suit |
| vvincent04-07-06, 07:57 AM | You want thinaun because if you die while holding it, it makes it a lot cheaper to be raised from the dead because the weapon has your soul conveniently near by. Vernon L. Vincent I have seen Thinuan a couple times, but why would you want it? | paigeoliver04-07-06, 08:33 AM | Yes, but it takes 5-8 raise deads to make up the cost of the weapon. And if the thing that killed you runs off with the weapon..... You want thinaun because if you die while holding it, it makes it a lot cheaper to be raised from the dead because the weapon has your soul conveniently near by. Vernon L. Vincent |
| Iswald04-07-06, 10:11 AM | And what is Blue Ice? Blue ice is a material from FB. It's not quite as good as mithral. Also, it has the problem with exposing you to cold when you wear it. I almost bought it just for the coolness factor. My cleric got access from an interactive and could have cast endure elements on himself every day. But, I think I was a bit short on gold and mithral really would work better for him. Edit - I've also got access to pearlsteel from Stormwrack, though I don't see much value in it. Out of curiousity, what material were you looking for? |
| solbergb04-07-06, 02:03 PM | Ok lets see. It varies a lot by character. Monk12: Mithril coming out of his ears, including one "unspecified" item that could be a crowbar if he wanted. Adamantine in armor and weapon form. One darkwood "any" favor which I used on a weapon that I later sold *sigh*. Thinanum (any weapon). There might be more. Archer8: mithril chain shirt (couple times), one "mithril or adamantine" that couldn't be a shield (used for arrows). Individual adamantine arrows (used to replace spent arrows). Thistledown armor (twice), most of the weird druid armor types (wood, leafweave, dragonhyde). Several darkwood items on inappropriate weapons (like staves or arrows). Has also found nearly every arrow type in A&EG and Races of Wild. This guy wants a mithril buckler and can't find access. Sorc 8: Mithril item (any), dragonhide, adamantine shortsword, adamantine +1 dagger with golem-strike 1/day, blunt arrows. There might be more, but like the monk, she doesn't really notice armor acess. She's looking for thistledown so she can have some armor to attach a death ward upgrade to. Dwarf tank5: Chiten armor, Thinanum on pansy elf weapons, maybe dragonhide, not certain. Nothing actually useful, like mithril, darkwood or adamantine. My horde of level 1-2 characters have not found much of anything. |
| GreatSiron04-09-06, 04:58 PM | First off, I wanted the Thiniaum for the coolness factor. I would just love to mention that I have a soul trapped in my sword. And I tend to die quite easily, so the cheaper raise dead would be a plus. As for the metal I was looking for, it was pandemonic silver. It would cost a lot but the fear effect sounded cool. |
| redgamer04-09-06, 09:12 PM | You won't exactly be mentioning you have your soul trapped in the sword now will you. If your soul is in the sword you are dead and not talking to anyone. I take back what I said before I can't imagine you finding pandemonium metal access. I may be wrong but thats what I beleive. Sorry. |
| GreatSiron04-11-06, 10:08 PM | I just wanted to make it clear why I want the metal access. My character is a blader, and collects blades in worship of Kelanen. And a blade made of a super rare metal would indeed be a tribute. Right now I only have access to a silver rapier and a cold metal shortsword, but I'd like to gain access to rarer materials. As for the pandemonic silver, not only would the effect be cool, but I could brag that my weapon was made of an otherworldly material. You know, something to brag about to the other bladers. By the way, how many different kinds of metals are there that could be made into weapons? I'm shooting for nine, but that's probably a pipe dream. I count 5: Adamantine, Cold Iron, Silver, Starmetal, and Thinaun. How many more are there? |
| Necrochaos04-11-06, 10:18 PM | My Marshal got access to Thinaum in a core mod from year 5. |
| GreatSiron04-11-06, 10:25 PM | My Marshal got access to Thinaum in a core mod from year 5. Well, looks like I'll be playing year 5's with my rogue for a while. I heard another mod might have Starmetal access. (It's in the blurb, so it's an okay chance, but you never can tell.) |
| haferka04-12-06, 09:12 AM | I for one encourage people to use the occasional "wierd" weapon materials even it is on a rather small & cheep item (like a dagger)... Then get a bard to join the group... (shift Weapon spell... turn those daggers into "whatever" weapon is most needed.... and it maintains its material composition... Its one way to get a "wooden" spiked chain.... for spikes/brambles combo... |

I count 5: Adamantine, Cold Iron, Silver, Starmetal, and Thinaun. How many more are there? Pearlsteel (Sto), ironwood and kheferu (Sa), none of which is extremely powerful. |
| delewobmesid04-12-06, 10:18 AM | I have access to Thinaun, but I haven't seen the source book for it; what book is that out of? |
| GreatSiron04-12-06, 04:22 PM | Thinaun is out of Complete Warrior |
| MadKaugh04-12-06, 08:54 PM | I was wondering what kinds of special materials any of you have run across, and how often. I'm asking this because I really want to gain access to a certain metal, but have never heard it mentioned on the boards. So I'm just wondering what kinds of special metals you guys have come across. Thinuan twice. Darkwood a couple of times. Until this year Mithril was a Metaorg item, and Adamantine once (upgrade one weapon in your character's life in the Metaorg) in Gran March. I expect Mithril will not be hard to find and Adamantine weapons will be frequent enough; the gotcha might be "is it something you can use?". MadKaugh |
