I would love to see new uses for "Special Misisons".

- One Time Item Creation, for those without the feats/abilities to craft.
Ex: Ftr commisions someone to further enchant his weapon... which requires special materials that he will need to go get... The xp/gp from the mission should be used to reduce the cost of crafting the item...

- Reincarnation, choosing a specific race that you wish to be reincarnated as... collect materials/components to asisst the process... hire a friendly mystic.... then allow yourself to be slain... cast the spell... and whalla... new race. Potentially "limited" races such as whisper gnome.

- Gain access to an unusual familiar/animal companion... we can already gain access to unusual paladin mounts.

- Item access, traveling to a far off land in search of a rumored item or animal that would aid you in your travels... this access would be "adventure" since it is rare and unussual in your region.

All of these uses would require the expenditure of favors and would be approved by the triad/circle... so, here in the BK.. the gnomes might develop a wierd ritual that severs their connection to nature.. and bonds them to something strange and unatural... wild or whisper gnome... the process may still be rather raw and only have a chance of success, the process itself would likely be different for every individual... thus it fits well into the category of Specila Mission.

Well, my wizard's already had his special mission for the year, but I started thinking about one for the future (I was fairly new to the idea when I requested this last one). I'd like to use a special mission to:

a) Invent a new spell.
b) Apprentice with a renowned wizard.
or c) Apprentice with a renowned wizard to invent a new spell.

Even if it's possible, I'm not sure my triad would go for it. But since you listed new ideas for special missions, I thought I'd throw this out there.

Another local player wants to get an intelligent bow, imbued with the spirit of one of his ancestors. (He needs someone to like him.)

You do realize that it goes against the very reincarnate rules in LGCS and you are also suggesting getting completely new races into LG which would result in lots of whining by other players* and a whole new set of problems that non PHB races cause (just look at Asherati & Centaurs).

Any time the triad spends on a special mission is time which is not being spent on a module or other activity which benefits the broader player community. They are volunteers and there are better uses for their time than pampering the munchkins.

That said, the Circle had a contest in year one which gave players access to something unique. Something similar was done in conjunction with surveys on the LG campaign in years 3 and 4 (IIRC). This is the sort of thing I'd like to see on a regular basis. A contest with two or three players allowed access to something out of the ordinary. A herd of centaurs disrupts the campaign. A handful of centaurs becomes something unique as they interact with other PCs.

Did you see the herd of Centuars?

Sure I heard of Centuars.

No a Centuar herd.

What do I care what a Centuar heard, I have no secrets from a Centuar.

~taking advantage of impending board manteniance time paradox to be silly

In theory a special mission can do almost anything. By the current rules many of your wishes are currently prohibited as far as I know. I think there currently are special missions to get special familiars.

Triad shouldn't spend much time doing special missions. Nor do they have to. Keoland has two people (neither triad members) who run the writing and administration of special missions. The triad simply gives the final approval something that take very little time. (this setup IMO could and should be expanded to any useful project not currently being done due to time constraints.)

out of the ordinary.. yes... i would love out of the ordinary... but I would also like to see more regional flavor... like allowing BK players to have orc characters... the abundance of goblinoid races in the bk and the "civilized status" or those races lends them very well to PC options. We need some goblinoid heroes here in the BK.

I am sure there is at least 1 cool race that could be added to every region, which would set the mood of the region at 1st level. The dragon magazine article with feats was a great start... lets expand upon it!

Special missions will never be allowed to open up new races or to get an item or anything like that. Being able to play new races should be unique like with what we did for the latest WF special. you may be seeing a few new unusual adventurers sitting at your table in the coming months.

I don't think I will, because I'm in Australia.

However, it'd be nice if the Winter Fantasy special was made into a core special so that everyone around the world gets an even shot...? *bats eyes*

IIRC, there was an Australian con that participated in the Extended Premiere program of the WF modules.

There was; Conquest had the expaneded premiere stuff. I was there and played all the special LG stuff - Hanging Glacier didn't have something funky like that in it, did it? At least, not at the high level... and that was the only LG special stuff.

The high-level version of Hanging Glacier did have the potential to grant a second AR under certain circumstances, but nobody on my table got it. Maybe that's what Tim's talking about? I don't know what the extra AR did, but the price you had to pay to get it was pretty steep.

Since the extended premiering is finished, the adventure is retired. You don't have to worry about spoilers too much. In any event, the price was unrecoverable death of your high level character.

Okay, I wasn't sure if the extended premiere was completely finished. One PC on my APL 12 table agreed to die when the question came up, but he drew the line at unrecoverable death. If it's not spoileriffic any more, what does the extra AR do, out of interest?

I think one interesting use for a Special Mission would be to gain access to a particular feat or spell.

When could you agree to die? Such a situation never came up on my table...

Final encounter on the high APLs only - one character could sacrifice him or herself on a permanent basis to keep the gate permanently sealed. The new AR opens up certain non-standard races (mostly Frostbite) and feats for the new character you can create.

Cool. I have also heard of a mod where someone encountered their diety.. and were given the chance to answer a question. This particular person failed the required roll, and the character was snuffed out of existance, but they were given a special cert to start a new character. "Basicly his character was forced reborn... maybee he will get it right a second time around".

Good to know these options are currently available in mods.. so they are within the potential bounds of an AR.

Yes, but expect them to be very rare and hard to get, especially in case of races and new none-core classes.
