Okay, I avoided re-asking a common question on these boards by a simple search or two, and am using Hero Forge as a character sheet / tracking system for now, with a few alternate methods as back-ups in case they prove more to my taste in the long run.

However, in trying to find a pdf, database, spreadsheet, or standalone program which can be used for my characters' spell sheets, the only one I have found thus far is the heroforge byproduct, spellforge. And it seems to be, to me, sorely lacking in a few areas, most especially in being up to date with current LG Open/Closed/NONC spells (the latest version I can find references what I think is an old mechanic no longer used, 'limited access').

Are there any other offerings out there?

The problem I face is that I am making two different specialist wizards, a generalist wizard, a sorcerer, 2 druids, and a cleric (I won't be running all of these, but I am making them before I decide which will be my primary, which few others I will play, and which are not worth it).

Trying to sort through the PHB, SpC, and other books which have Open spells in them, sorth through which spells are in which schools, and manipulate it all by hand is possible but time consuming and providing headaches. I thought spell forge would be a solution, but due to its clumsiness in use and being out of date, it is not helping at all.

What do you use for your characters?

Thanks!

I personally use the dynamic ones at www.emass-web.com

Mix and match which books you want in and the site will generate a spell list for you.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have briefly looked it over, and will give it some more consideration tomorrow, but a few things jump out at me on first use (and I may just be missing something here);

If I try and 'choose' my spells, I get a poorly aligned pop-up [using firefox, didn't try to load the page in exploder or netscrape] with no spells available to select from, no matter how many or which sources (including 'all') I have selected.

If I just try to print up all spells for a given class from select sources (which in itself defeats the purpose of what I am looking for; I already have the source books), I get a chromeless tiny pop-up window (can't resize it) which shows a pdf at 13.33% and is still illegible on my 21" monitor at 1024x768 resolution... and why waste the paper to print it anyway, since I do already have all the source books and can't select spells for an individual spell-book?

All in all, I have to say on first impression I am unimpressed and underwhelmed with Ema's dynamic spell sheet. About the same reaction I had to Spell Forge.

So... while I will give Ema's another shot in the morning, I'd still love to hear some more alternatives!

Ken Jenks, who is a regular poster on these boards, does an amazing job of keeping track of what spells are LG core for the different casting classes.

Thanks for the link, and thanks to Ken Jenks!

My first reaction was to reply and state that I already have the list of open/closed/nonc spells from the LGCS; but luckily I checked his list and found it much more legible, nicely laid out, and including the quick descriptions of each spell!

I am still in need (or, in want) of an automatic spell-book program (or spreadsheet, database, web page, etc.); but his list is getting printed out and added to my character's binders for sure!

I have found it much easier just to draw up my own spreadsheet with the specific info for my character (using Ken's lists to make my decisions)

I'm using Spellgen (http://pigmentia.net/spellgen/). It does not have LG specific references, but is pretty complete in its sources.

I actually took Ken's list (which is conveniently color coded ;) ) and modified spellforge to open up the newly opened spells in spellforge.

I downloaded this and gave it a look, it seems like it could be very good for one who wants to configure it for several house-ruled campaigns, but setting up the campaign for LG seemed unwieldy and difficult; I gave up after 30 minutes of tweaking.

I have found it much easier just to draw up my own spreadsheet with the specific info for my character (using Ken's lists to make my decisions)I think this will be the route I take. I may use an access database instead of an excel spreadsheet, giving it a bit more finesse and power; and friendliness for the end-user.
I actually took Ken's list (which is conveniently color coded ;) ) and modified spellforge to open up the newly opened spells in spellforge.I really don't know if I got an outdated version, or if it just isn't to my tastes, or what; but I disliked spellforge a great deal. Aside from not being up to date with the LG rules, I just didn't like the complexity for the user.

In general, I don't mind a bit of coding on the back-end when I have been involved in designing a program or web-app, etc.; but when I get a product to use as a 'consumer' or 'end-user' I think it horrible form to have to put my skills in those areas to use; as it assumes all users will have those skills (or be unable to use it to the fullest).
