| echoota07-15-07, 12:03 PM | Is it possible to begin a greyhawk ruins character now? Since it just requires that the character be 1st level still. Could a player play a couple of modules set in Greyhawk and just put down that they are from Greyhawk and that's all that is required? |
| ShinAkuma207-15-07, 01:38 PM | You cannot choose Greyhawk as your home region, unless your first module is the Greyhawk intro. So, you can begin your Greyhawk Ruins character now, but he cannot have Greyhawk as his home region. |
| echoota07-15-07, 02:46 PM | Ah, so aside from TUs and feat selection is there any other benefits for being from Greyhawk? |
| Genghis Cohen07-15-07, 04:10 PM | Ah, so aside from TUs and feat selection is there any other benefits for being from Greyhawk?Rumor has it that there will be other benefits. My recommendation is to hope for the best and prepare for the worst. That's why my Greyhawk Ruins character's first mod will be CGR7-01. |
| echoota07-15-07, 05:50 PM | Yeah, we'd just like to start in the next couple of weeks. Gencon, as always, has been the bane of my gaming world. It happens far too late in the summer, far past the point when people are around and able to play. Just too many people take August off for vacations and that's when the rpg world is always releasing their biggest stuff for the year. |
| ShinAkuma207-16-07, 12:24 AM | We already know that certain feats are available to Greyhawk characters, like Zagyg's Favor. It's in the LGCS. Other than that, I'm not banking on much. |
| CdrcJsn07-16-07, 02:48 AM | You cannot choose Greyhawk as your home region, unless your first module is the Greyhawk intro. So, you can begin your Greyhawk Ruins character now, but he cannot have Greyhawk as his home region. Was the character creation rules released somewhere? Last I heard, whether or not you need a brand new character (or whether you can play an existing level 1 character) was still in the air and we were told to wait for the mini-campaign handbook. Cedric |
| Shaudius07-16-07, 09:21 AM | The up in the air part was whether you needed a brand new character to play CGR7-01 or whether or not you could play it as say your third mod as a first level PC. I don't think anything has been said about starting your home region as Greyhawk outside of a CGR mod. The answer is almost certainly, no you cannot. My bet is that it will work similarly to the Bright Sands arc. Start a new character in the first one, if you don't want to start a new character play 2-4. Shawn |
| MatteBlack07-16-07, 09:27 AM | If you intended to start a character and stay below Level 2 you aren't really investing that much time. What, 2 mods, maybe? If it turns out that starting from Greyhawk is the better option, starting over shouldn't be too big of a deal. |
| CdrcJsn07-16-07, 11:41 AM | The up in the air part was whether you needed a brand new character to play CGR7-01 or whether or not you could play it as say your third mod as a first level PC. Agreed. But ShinAkuma2 made a definitive statement that you needed the first AR to be the CGR mod, so I wondered if he had more info than has been released or not. |
| TetsujinOni07-16-07, 01:09 PM | Just an inference, I would think. Similar requirements as the asherati or centaurs from the Bright Sands arc. |
| ShinAkuma207-16-07, 01:33 PM | Agreed. But ShinAkuma2 made a definitive statement that you needed the first AR to be the CGR mod, so I wondered if he had more info than has been released or not. It's been available for months. Only new or 1st-level characters can play in Greyhawk Ruins. (That is the AR for the first adventure must appear in your stack before you reach 2nd-level). If you create a new character for the arc, you can choose the Domain of Greyhawk as your home region. Also, the LGCS states that you may choose any non-triad controlled region as your home region. Greyhawk is triad controlled, just like the Bright Lands, making it unavailable without a special exception (ie, the above passage). |
| TetsujinOni07-16-07, 01:48 PM | And it's been repeatedly stated that the 12/05/2006 announcement is NOT a binding campaign statement. The rules for the Greyhawk Ruins arc are in review at HQ, and will be posted once they have passed that review, per the RPGA chat last week. |
| bitznarf07-16-07, 01:48 PM | However it has been stated that any information released up till now may or may not be in the final Greyhawk Ruins sourcebook. |
| Shaudius07-16-07, 03:29 PM | I think you mean you may choose any Triad-controlled region as your home region, Greyhawk is not Triad-controlled(it is Circle-controlled(Core) and therefore not normally available without special exception. Exception was made for the Bright Sands per that campaign arc. Special exemption was made for the Crystalmists through the Snow Elf creation card, and presumably special exception will be made for the Kobold creation card and the Greyhawk Ruins arc. It's been available for months. Also, the LGCS states that you may choose any non-triad controlled region as your home region. Greyhawk is triad controlled, just like the Bright Lands, making it unavailable without a special exception (ie, the above passage). |
| rschaefer_107-20-07, 02:26 PM | Has anyone said CGR mods will be available for online play? I have a small group of friends that I play online with. I'm hoping to be able to play this with them. |
| bitznarf07-20-07, 02:30 PM | Yes, I do believe so. They would be considered Core mods. |
| GreatSiron07-20-07, 02:33 PM | Hey I thought the book was supposted to come out this week? Did it get delayed again? |
| Maldin07-27-07, 03:04 PM | Well, the LG Greyhawk Ruins Sourcebook (http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=lg/welcome) is out, and everyone is thinking about the characters they will be creating for this exciting plot arc. Looking for background information as well? Now that the Sourcebook document has revealed that the map for the Free City in EtGR is a redraw of my original map I designed for the unfortunately out-of-print Living Greyhawk Journal #2 (well, actually, I was flattered to see that it is an incredibly accurate tracing of my original design, right down to every last shack and tree), players may find it useful to visit my City of Greyhawk webpage (http://melkot.com/locations/cogh/cogh.html) where they can learn where all the happening taverns, temples, government buildings, and other important sites are. Know your city! ;) Denis, aka "Maldin, Sage of Greyhawk" Maldin's Greyhawk http://melkot.com Edition-independent Greyhawk goodness... maps, magic, mysteries, mechanics, and your City of Greyhawk home! |
| TxNetWolf07-31-07, 05:26 PM | ShinAkuma2 said... You cannot choose Greyhawk as your home region, unless your first module is the Greyhawk intro. Where are you getting this from? Looking at the Greyhawk Ruins Sourcebook... Players can either create a new character using the rules presented in this chapter or use an existing 1st-level character. Whichever route a player decides to take, their character must have a "Greyhawk Ruins" AR in its AR stack before it reaches 2nd level. Nothing is said about 1st AR having to be Greyhawk Ruins to take Greyhawk as Home Domain. In fact, the Sourcebook states... New characters designed to participate in "Greyhawk Ruins" can choose the Domain of Greyhawk as their home region. Again, "first AR" is not even mentioned... Joe Wolf Houston, TX |
| NeSoDak07-31-07, 05:38 PM | Ah, so aside from TUs and feat selection is there any other benefits for being from Greyhawk? There is also the many affiliations one can join. They provide benefits based upon your rank within the affiliation. But it is rather difficult to get a high enough rank to see benefits until a few levels are under your belt. |
| TxNetWolf07-31-07, 05:50 PM | As a follow-up to the previous post, the Sourcebook even states in the FAQ section... Q: What is I create a character with the Domain of Greyhawk as my home region but never play a "Greyhawk Ruins" adventure? If you reach 2nd-level without having played a "Greyhawk Ruins" adventure your character's home region reverts to the area in which you have residency. So, one does NOT have to have CGR7-01 as the first AR in a character's stack to select the Domain of Greyhawk as their home region. Joe Wolf Houston, TX |

Joe Wolf Houston, TX I got this from the LGCS and the info from the Greyhawk Ruins previews page. Apparantly, that information was subject to change; regardless, it was accurate at the time of my post. |
| Maldin07-31-07, 07:49 PM | Shin's original post predated the (at the time, impending) release of the Greyhawk Ruins Sourcebook. You have two options: 1) Create a new character designed for the arc in which case you can choose the Dmoain of Greyhawk as your home reagion 2) Use an existing character. (for which there is no permission or mechanic for moving them to DoG) |
| bitznarf08-01-07, 09:52 AM | Right, but with option 1 your first AR does not have to be a Greyhawk Ruins AR. You simply need to start a Greyhawk Ruins mod before second level. |

| Artexerxees08-03-07, 09:16 PM | Hey guys, do you know if all your Greyhawk Ruins modules have to be played by the same character? In the Bright sands story arc, you could play any mod but the first one with any character. Is Greyhawk Ruins going to be the same way? If is is, then like the Bright Sands, I will skip the first module and play the rest of the series with my old characters.:) |

Hope that answers it for you. Maybe download that sourcebook for it, it has a ton of nice info for you. |
| RedKnightofKet08-04-07, 10:31 AM | 1st off you have to have the very 1st AR in your stack. 2ndly any character you bring into the arc has to be 1st level. Hope that answers it for you. Maybe download that sourcebook for it, it has a ton of nice info for you. Read that again, Mithrein. And I quote: "Whichever route a player decides to take, their character must have a 'Greyhawk Ruins' AR in its stack before it reaches 2nd level." So it does not have to be your first AR, but it must be in your stack before you reach 2nd level. And that's for both options - using a 1st level character or making Greyhawk your home region. |
| Bogjob08-04-07, 10:39 AM | Soory but I disagree, the book clearly states that to have a home domain of Greyhawk you have to have a character specifically designed to play Ruins, a character that you play 1 or more mods with before you play Ruins was not specifically designed to play Ruins but is rather a character jumping in to the series after he has been designed. This is why on my character creation thread question about this I was hoping for a circle reply as I can see where you are coming from, unfortunately none has been forthcoming as of yet. |
| RedKnightofKet08-04-07, 12:16 PM | It specifically says "whichever route" when there are two options listed: either using an existing 1st level character, or create one for the Ruins. In order to make a character for the arc who has Greyhawk as a home region, you can create the character, but you must play him within the arc before he reaches 1st level, otherwise his home region reverts and you do not get to play him in the series. The reasoning appears to be this: if I go to GenCon and sign up to play a couple of the new modules, plus the Greyhawk Ruins game, I want to play that same character. How fair would it be if I didn't get into Ruins until Saturday? Does that mean I can't play my character in the first couple of modules? you can't convert a character you have already started and have given a home region to, but you can design a new character to be played in Ruins, just make sure to play him in it before he reaches 2nd level. |
| Bogjob08-04-07, 12:35 PM | What the sourcebook also says is this, ' New characters designed to participate in Greyhawk Ruins can choose the Domain of Greyhawk as their home region.' This is black and white as far as I am concerned, if you have played mods befor playing Greyhawk Ruins you are not a new character. 'whichever route' is merely stating that a character has to play a Ruins mod before they hit 2nd to continue playing in the series, no mention is made of Home Region at all in this statement. |

If the Circle could definitively clarify this before the CGR mods get launched, a lot of grief will be avoided. |
| Bogjob08-04-07, 12:48 PM | All it takes is for one of the Circle members to say 'Yea' or 'Nay' and we'll all be happy. |

My character is designed to participate in Greyhawk Ruins. Is it my fault that I'm not able to get in that module first? When I play that character for the first time (in a slot O), I will be listing his home region as "Greyhawk", because he was designed for the Ruins series. Look at the second question in the Ruins FAQ: how can a player who never played in a Ruins module even have Greyhawk as his home region, by your logic? Go ahead and quote for me the text that says "Greyhawk Ruins must be the first AR in the character's stack" for anything. The document simply does not say that. There is no need for a Circle ruling here, because the rules are in the document. Be careful when making assumptions about something that is not in fact in the rules. |
| Bogjob08-05-07, 08:32 AM | My character is designed to participate in Greyhawk Ruins. Is it my fault that I'm not able to get in that module first? Be careful when making assumptions about something that is not in fact in the rules. Quite frankly, yes it is your fault, no one else is making you play your character before you play Greyhawk Ruins. As I have stated only new characters can have Greyhawk as a home domain, I am not quoting something not in the rules. If you buy a car with 1 or 2 previous owners that is not a new car. The faq in my opinion is to stop people designing a character for Ruins and taking advantage of the new rules specifically for Ruins and then not playing the mods and using the character for something else. So I am afraid that no one is reading anything into a rule that isn't there, they are confused by the wording of the document, I might be right, you might be right, so I don't think its too much to ask for someone in the Circle to take 5 mins to reply. This is an arguement that won't go away otherwise. Here in Ireland no one will be allowed to bring an existing character to Ruins with mods under the belt with a home region of Greyhawk. I wouldnt mind being able to do as you say and go into Ruins with a few extra gps and equip under my belt but because of the confusion I can't. There is a big enough proportion of people confused by the wording to require a Dispel Confusion or something. Who knows maybe it will be sorted out at Gencon since I assume Circle members will be there and someone can ask them. |
| Franco Un-American08-05-07, 01:28 PM | I'd like to know where you're getting the idea that 'a new character designed for Greyhawk Ruins' must begin with a CGR module. I can design any number of characters for Greyhawk Ruins, and the new character is still designed for play in that series even if I play something else first. |

Because it isn't there! Please, by all means, prove me wrong. And I think it is pretty clear in there. Why else would there be a question about what would happen if you made a character with Greyhawk as a home region, and didn't play him in Ruins before 2nd level? Simply this: because there is nothing restricting a character for playing in one of those modules beforehand. I'm tired of quoting and trying to prove the point to you. If you want to make table variation where none exists, be my guest. I'll just remember to avoid playing in Ireland.... |

Designing a character for Ruins of Greyhawk is indeed a decision made at Creation. You can't just take a character that you played an intro with few years ago and make him a GHR character. You can create one with Greyhawk as home region and play some Intro's before any GHR mods as long as he has at least 1 GHR AR before level 2. If you could not, then why would they put the "You need to have 1 GHR AR before level 2" rule in the document ? |

If you could not, then why would they put the "You need to have 1 GHR AR before level 2" rule in the document ? This is where the problem lies, in character gen it specifically, with no ifs or buts, says a character has to be a 'new' character designed for Ruins to be able to use the rules in the sourcebook. New= unused (if you bought a new car only to be find it had a few thousand miles on the clock you would not consider the car to be new would you ?) , if you 'use' your character in any mods before Ruins that character is used and therefore not new. Then the sourcebook says later in the FAQ the piece about having one AR in the stack before 2nd. As far as I and many others are concerned these two statements are in conflict with one another and a Dispel Confusion or whatever needs to be done to say one way or the other. Either way is fine with me, I just dont think it would be nice to turn up at a con or whatever and be told that the character you brought at 999xp or less can't be used and to go gen another one. When hopefully the upcoming Dispel Confusion will put it in black and white. As I have said I can see both sides of the argument. Anyway this is my last statement on the subject as I seem to have offended a few people and that was not my intention. I would extend anyone an invite to come and get mauled in Onnwal (Irish branch) and enjoy a few gallons of the black stuff. |
| gomeztoo08-06-07, 01:11 PM | This is where the problem lies, in character gen it specifically, with no ifs or buts, says a character has to be a 'new' character designed for Ruins to be able to use the rules in the sourcebook. What this means is that if you have a 1st level PC with home region Bandit Kingdoms, you cannot change that PC to give it homeregion Greyhawk City, not can it use the new rules items. You CAN create an entirely new PC, give it home region Greyhawk City, use new rules items, and then play two new intro mods before actually going into the CGR scenario. You have then, at creation, a new PC designed for the Greyhawk ruins arc. It is expected that you play Greyhawk ruins, but it need not be the first scenario you play. I hope the DC (out this week) will make this more clearer, and add some rules to prevent abuse. Gomez |
| chesspiece08-07-07, 12:27 PM | What the sourcebook also says is this, ' New characters designed to participate in Greyhawk Ruins can choose the Domain of Greyhawk as their home region.' I’m just another opinionated poster, but I expect the clarification will be that the restrictions in the above sentence only apply to choosing the Domain of Greyhawk as a Home Region. It is important to note that the quote is found under the heading “Home Region”. In order to be a Domain of Greyhawk (DoG) PC, you must be a new PC, and be designed to play CGR. If you aren’t a new PC, you can’t select DoG. If you select DoG, but reach second level without playing CGR, then you’re no longer DoG. The paragraphs under Player Information (start of page 11) seem to clearly allow CGR for existing 1st-level PCs (0-999XP). It might be easier if the Circle breaks it down to the 4 options: - Not from Greyhawk and not playing CGR. This includes most of the existing LG PCs (all the ones that are level 2+.) No problem here. - From Greyhawk and not playing CGR (you SHOULD NOT do this). You can create a new level 1 PC with a Home Region of the DoG as per the Greyhawk Ruins Sourcebook. You may create a kobold if you possess the card. The Snow Elf card restricts Home Region, so they can’t be from DoG. When level 2 is reached, if the PC hasn’t played a CGR module, they must change Home Region. See the Greyhawk Ruins FAQ in the Greyhawk Ruins Sourcebook. Warning - the Circle did not seem impressed with the suggestion of using this method to gain access and may ban / penalize this in the upcoming Dispel Confusion. - Not from Greyhawk and playing CGR. Any new or existing PC (including Snow Elves) can play CGR, provided they have never reached 1000XP when they start their first CGR module. (Circle might permit PCs that reached level 2 but are back to level 1, but I haven’t seen this clarified.) You may join the Affiliations at -10. - From Greyhawk and playing CGR. Make your new PC using the Greyhawk Ruins Sourcebook (not a Snow Elf). You may join the Affiliations. You must play your first CGR adventure before you reach second level. |

From the GRS: "characters with the Domain of Greyhawk as their home region have Open access to [stuff]". Thus without a home region of 'the Domain of Greyhawk' PCs cannot use the options presented in the GRS. They might be able to find access elsewhere but the GRS doesn't cut it. |
| Pint_Glass_Crusader08-08-07, 07:48 AM | So the only sure-fire way to get any GP and XP in before GHR, at the moment, is... 1) Create a new level 1 character from your home region (so no alternate class abilities or Dungeonscape feats) 2) Play 2 APL2 modules (e.g. an introductory and another) 3) Get [and spend] 900xp & 900gp 4) Still be level 1 for GHR 5) Pay the extra TUs to play Am I right? If so, there is an APL2 playing in my area tonight, who need a 6th. I may use my [proposed] Marshal, as he doesn't get any alternate class features, and isn't using the Dungeonscape feats. As my secondary character, I don't mind paying the extra TUs to play. You can still join the affiliations, but with a penalty... am I right? A nice masterwork weapon and some [buff & heal] potions will certainly help, if the group I'm with, have only newly generated characters... it's a certainty that the players will arrive and have no cleric or BDF... it always happens in disorganised gaming groups! |
