| Maesto10-09-06, 05:40 AM | Hi all, I've just received a favour that allows my ranger archer to choose any two non-restricted spells from the spell compendium to gain access. Now, I'm only ever going to reach ranger 11 in the normal campaign, so no 4th level spells. Furthermore, I've only got wisdom 12, so unless I get a hefty wisdom boosting item, I'm going to be stuck on second level spells only (ranger 11 gives 0 third level spells), so I'm really only interested in first and second level spells. As an archer, Hunter's Mercy looks rather useful. Are there any other suggestions? Cheers, Jolyon Edit: Fixed error |
| Cynric10-09-06, 07:12 AM | Damn. Does this mean that I cannot ask you what to do with the same favour for my druid? |
| TWG_Prometheus10-09-06, 08:17 AM | I'm not sure I get the question...maybe I'm missing something. To my knowledge, the spells in the Spell Compendium were either listed as Core or Restricted, and any not listed in such a manner were Limited. If the spell was already Core, I wouldn't have thought you'd need a favor to gain access. If it was Restricted, I wouldn't think you could gain access in any event. That would lead me to believe that you're getting limited spell access, but the favor says they have to be non-limited? Am I missing something? |
| Maesto10-09-06, 10:17 AM | Ah, apologies. Non-restricted, not non-limited. So yes, I'm after two limited spells from the spell compendium =) |
| gomeztoo10-09-06, 11:02 AM | Favors that grant a pick-a-limited-spell-freely are no longer valid. A favor should give a choice of a specific selection of spells. Triads shoud give out errata for older favors that did give out such access. So check the triad on what the favor (after errata) gives out. |
| SirApropos10-09-06, 11:29 AM | Where does that ruling come from? A recent CORE mod just gave out access to pick any limited Cleric/Bard/Sorcerer/Wizard spell from a particular source. |
| UMiskatonic10-09-06, 12:00 PM | Are you a archer-ranger, or a TWF ranger? Do you have loads of skill points, or not so much? Are there people you normally play with, or not? I'll try to suggest something after that.... |
| copper_wyrmling10-09-06, 04:32 PM | Where does that ruling come from? A recent CORE mod just gave out access to pick any limited Cleric/Bard/Sorcerer/Wizard spell from a particular source. Really? Now, there are exactly two recent Core mods I haven't played... ;) Maesto, I agree Hunter's Mercy looks good. You could also consider Fell The Greatest Foe (works on all attacks, so scales well with high number of attacks). For your animal companion, maybe Enrage Animal or Align Fang? I'm glad you had a good time at SRDU (and so jealous...) I'm kind of shocked they gave out an any-Spell-Compendium-spell favour with no level cap - druids with Bite of the Werebear, anyone? |
| Maesto10-09-06, 07:48 PM | Yeah, archer type here. Loads of skillpoints, mostly in handle animal, heal, hide, listen, move silently, search, spot and survival. There's nobody this character normally plays with. Yes, SRDU was great =) And yes, this is the newest cab-off-the-rank module for a specific region. It says "Access to any two non-restricted spells from spell compendium". I think it was the "from this source" part that made it allowed, rather than "any limited". I know a druid/beastmaster who is considering bite of the werebear to share on the animal companion... Follow it up with animal growth? Yes, stupidity. That's strength over 50. Fell the greatest foe doesn't work for an archer; we don't do melee, and arrowmind doesn't attack in melee, just threatens. Align fang and Enrage animal are possibilities though. Cheers, Jolyon |
| Cynric10-09-06, 09:29 PM | Yep I would have that druid. Goota spend some more time looking at option. Girallons Blessing looks good. A tiger that pounces and rends with strength over 40. |
| Madfox1110-11-06, 03:01 AM | Where does that ruling come from? A recent CORE mod just gave out access to pick any limited Cleric/Bard/Sorcerer/Wizard spell from a particular source. Which ones? It was a ruling made by the Circle to the Triads at the start of this year. Gomeztoo is quite correct though - there should be NO favors that grant access to any one limited anything. | Cynric10-11-06, 06:58 AM | I'm kind of shocked they gave out an any-Spell-Compendium-spell favour with no level cap - druids with Bite of the Werebear, anyone? Why do you think Maesto is saying he will better anything I put on my animal companion now. Although I think I will only go as far as weretiger. Add Girralon's blessing or something else |
| Rerednaw10-20-06, 11:55 AM | Arrow Mind. Swift action. Threaten with a Bow. No AoO while firing while threatened. 1 min/level. I do not have SpC handy, but I know it is in the CAdv. [edit: I thought it was limited. Looks like it is core.] |

Cheers, Jolyon Edit: Fixed error SpC Limited Ranger Spells Ranger 1 Aspect of the wolf: nice flavour, might be usefull for scouting Blades of fire: goody for the two-weapon guy Claws of the bear: actually not too usefull, sorry Climb walls: actually not too usefull, sorry Crabwalk: would be great for a pouncing wildrunner Dawn: actually not too usefull Deep breath: might be usefull, most when your home region fancies seafarers a lot. Enrage animal: actually not too usefull Horrible taste: actually not too usefull Hunter’s mercy: yea sounds good for an archer, but you trade one round of casting for ONE critical Lay of the land: good utility spell Lightfoot: good for a melee character, maybe for an archer to get away from melee, and you know, you sometimes really want to get away :) Living prints: maybe usefull depends on regional frequency of "track them down" adventures Marked object: consecrated harrier anyone??? Ram’s might: actually not too usefull Rapid burrowing: just silly, sorry Remove scent: i am not sure about the actual application of the second effect of the spell, if you can ward yourself it would be nice, if you first have to touch the smelly thingy,it is just silly again. Resist planar alignment: you don't want to be there anyway ;) Rhino’s rush: nice for wildrunenrs again :) Smell of fear: just silly, again Snowshoes: just by boots of the winterlands Stalking brand: consecrated harrier anyone???? Surefoot: might be off some use, depends on your build Surefooted stride: good for the light infantry, not so usefull for an archer Towering oak: actually not too usefull Wings of the sea: just silly Ranger 2 Align fang: your party's monk will kiss you for this :) Burrow: not too usefull Curse of impending blades: a - 2 on AC with no save, not to bad :) Fell the greatest foe: melee guy's again Jagged tooth : only usefull for druids, i suppose Lion's charge: two-weapon guys again One with the land: not too usefull Tremorsense: got to get those annoying invisible thingies, not to bad either just my personal thoughtsk, there are some generally usefull spells and some that depend on your character's abilities or tactics and the regional flavour. ciao martin m. |
