The spring of CY594 has seen much activity in Onnwals struggle for liberation from the yoke of the Scarlet Sign. The reverses of the Storm on the Volanots, as the events have come to be known locally, pushed the forces of Free Onnwal back almost to the outskirts of Sornhill itself and began a period of bitter fighting along the Storm Coast. Seeking to capitalise on it’s victories, where their new found Pomarji Euroz allies surprised and outflanked the attacking forces of Free Onnwal, the Scarlet Sign made a bold move to decapitate the fledgling state by capturing her two most important towns, the Szeks seat in Kildeer and that of his paramour Duchess Relaster in Sornhill. Whilst many of Onnwals most experienced Freeswords were within the Headlands on a mission for the Szek, the Scarlet Sign attacked first unleashing undead horrors transformed by the foul machinations of Brotherhood sorcery upon the village of Bergardbridge where but a handful of survivors, including the Mayor, were rescued by brave adventurers dispatched from Kildeer. This bold stroke was followed up by simultaneous landings of troops upon the docks of both Kildeer and Sornhill. Upon sightings of the approaching Brotherhood and Pomarji fleets Freeswords returning from the Headlands and Bergardbridge were rushed to meet the threat although defeat seemed imminent. It was at this stage that a small band of inexperienced patriots finally broke through to Kildeer escorting an ambassador from Ahlissa into the Szeks court with an offer of alliance and assistance to meet the threat. With urging from his loyal subjects, the Szek agreed to enter an alliance with the United Kingdom of Ahlissas’ Overking Xavener I to form the Naerie compact. The fighting upon the docks of Sornhill and Kildeer was fierce especially in Sornhill where large swathes of the dockyard was destroyed by summoned fire elementals before the main body of troops were landed. It was at this moment that the Golden sun and nightingale banners of the Ahlissan fleet were sighted and after a short action the Brotherhood withdrew. Since that day there has been an uneasy stalemate as the Brotherhood regrouped and Free Onnwal repaired its shattered towns.
