How does teaching animals tricks work? [I'm new to the campaign, and want to start a Gnome Druid in Bessel this year so that when Winter Fantasy comes around, I'll be considered a soldier.] Besides the free trick that I get for my animal companion, it seems that I should be spending TUs to teach it tricks. Can i do these before my first adventure? Do I roll the check in front of the judge, or do I need to take 10?

If you are a ranger or druid with an animal companion it is assumed that the animal has a full compliment of tricks when it starts to adventure with you (see LGCS pages 36 & 37). When the animal companion advances due to you gaining a level, you can pick a new trick and it doesn't take any TUs (see PHB page 36), but most judges will want you to have a list of your animal's tricks (see PHB page 74) somewhere so you can't just pull them out of thin air at your convenience.

One of the things that bums me out is that the Trick selection is so slim. Masters of the Wild had some pretty cool tricks that make the animals really useful to the non-traditional Druid, like the "assist" trick.

Hopefully the lack of "cool" tricks will be fixed in the "complete adventurer."

Here's to hoping. <crosses fingers>
