| Puggle Halfwine08-19-07, 09:58 PM | Hey guys, So LG is soon dead. I was planning on writing up a whole bunch of stories for our In Character mailing list, relating what happens to all of my characters at the end of the campaign. How they live the rest of their lives, what happens to them, etc. A sort of 'epilogue', if you will. Some will be happy endings, some will not. What is everyone else doing? |
| Hariman08-19-07, 11:58 PM | Buy a new "D&D file folder", keep the old one on a bookshelf with the old ARs intact, and pull it out every so often to reminisce. I'll have fond memories of my characters for a long time. Even the times when there were jokes about tossing my character's into a room and closing the door behind him because he was under an insanity effect. Or tossing him at a door to check for traps. (Still insane, and unconscious at the time.) |
| _metz_08-20-07, 12:04 AM | I know I will be playing out Sarian with Gusto. Then he shall sail off, probably into a dimensional rift, and hopefully a home game or something. If there is room for Pirates in FR, I may even have him reincarnated there, ALA the crazy dream intro thing... |

And why not remake the old characters in the new living campaign ? |

| Hariman08-20-07, 12:35 AM | There are the Pirate isles in FR if my memory serves me correctly. And why not remake the old characters in the new living campaign ? I forgot to mention, certain characters will transmigrate over to Living FR. My Rogue Wizard being the first of them. |
| cycloptic_squirrel08-20-07, 12:37 AM | I'll probably play everything I can with Andelle next year and then retire her. I may write a piece of fiction based on her at some point. Eric the Scholar will probably get shelved, though I'd probably bring him out for a home game if the chance arose. Quiet Chuck has had a good run. I'll probably just leave him alone and envision him hanging out in front of some convienince store with Kay, shaking his head at Kay's loud, foul mouthed antics. And Wedgie. Wedgie will be returning in Forgotten Realmz format. He might not fit in perfectly, but dangit, if they're taking away my LG, then my revenge will be subjecting Forgotten Realmz to an infestation of underpants gnomes! "UNDERPANTS!" |
| kegdrainer08-20-07, 12:59 AM | I have a feeling that there are going to be cases where players are going to use "Last great acts of defiance" (Bag of holding/portable holes) on Rary and others, just to say they can. |
| LGMoses08-20-07, 01:48 AM | yes, a lot of my players are disenchanted. Paladins talk of falling, players turning on each other. Remove my character? He was going to leave soon anyway... I call this next year the Greyhawk Apocalypse. |
| Eric Anondson08-20-07, 01:56 AM | Call it the Greyhawcalypse. :rimshot: |
| Fsi-Dib08-20-07, 02:23 AM | I can already imagine a scenario, where in the middle of a desert lies a sailing ship ... aboard it is a large group of heroes, who left their own world in search for another. This ship would contain numerous Greyhawk player characters. Fortunately, in our region there is a spellcaster with a sailing ship. If that does not happen, as a last thing my barbarian will go to Menowood and slaughter every fey there is. Believe me, my barbarian has enough power attack to kill anything in his path. Just to add, that I don't feel all that attached to the characters, but I do feel bad about losing some of the personalities. I dislike recreating older characters. Hopefully evil characters will be allowed .. I really really really really hope that. Also, am I the only 21-year-old? |

I have a Pirate with a Spellcaster Cohort, and my Mate IS a caster with a ship. (we both were planning on buying more too) Oh and I am 21 in a month or so, I'm just not silly enough to think playing an evil character is a viable commercial venture for a corporate gaming entity, especially one as oft scrutinised as Dungeons and Dragons. Please think sensibly about it. |
| clannagh08-20-07, 02:45 AM | I'm just not silly enough to think playing an evil character is a viable commercial venture for a corporate gaming entity, especially one as oft scrutinised as Dungeons and Dragons. Please think sensibly about it. Cabal of Shadows characters for Xendrik can be Evil. |
| _metz_08-20-07, 02:59 AM | Cabal of Shadows characters for Xendrik can be Evil. But thats not a living campaign. Thats Xendrik, which is one of the most silly settings I have ever seen. Oh well, if they do allow it, then I suppose I will sit back and watch the company self destruct itself. No sane marketing group would allow truly evil roleplaying in a global campaign. Considering the anti DnD lobby in the US, trashing the old worldwide campaign and replacing it with one that allows evil campaigns is going to go down very well lol. I am still of the opinion that people should keep their evil PCs to home brew where they know people are comfortable with it. And from a professional consultancy viewpoint, would strongly advise the same. |
| Fsi-Dib08-20-07, 04:04 PM | This goes waaaay off-topic, but whenever there's talk about evil characters, I'm in. Why? I would love to play evil characters in Living campaigns. It's just those half-witted loons who play slaughtering mad men just for the heck of it ... the DM might remove such people from their sight at his own discretion, and no one would complain. I guess the general image of evil characters is screwed by numerous CRPG games. For instance in NWN2 all the evil dialog options include being rude, spit on people, yell and all that crap. A smart evil person thinks on a larger scale, and thus has his/her own reasons to do good deeds. *ahem* Fortunately I have very few characters I'll miss. I have my main slaughter machine, a crappy monk/cleric, another crappy halfling whisperknife, a crappy super-IQ halfling enchanter, and a superb pimp gnome. All I care about are the slaughter machine and the gnome. Fortunately I can recreate the gnome in about any campaign I play. |

It's just those half-witted loons who play slaughtering mad men just for the heck of it ... the DM might remove such people from their sight at his own discretion, and no one would complain. Truth be told, I played a Lawful (disputed) Neutral character with his deity as "Stern Alia's Son". He died in his first scenario, but by doing so he most likely saved the whole group. An evil character died heroically. All I care about are the slaughter machine and the gnome. Fortunately I can recreate the gnome in about any campaign I play. Allowing evil characters as a creation option opens the floodgates to bad things, however. Could an evil character be reasonably played in a Living Campaign? Certainly, they could. It would be a horrifically bad idea for any Living Campaign to actually allow it though. You and maybe some other people could probably run a reasonable evil character in LFR, but nothing could make up for the ruin that a few bad evil characters would cause. ------------ Back to topic, I've been debating in another thread that it isn't necessarily correct to say that your characters are dying since you can transition much of the character to LFR, (if you choose to) but I see this thread as being totally different. Any character that's been through a couple levels of play has very specific experiences that make them unique from any other build you might make of the same character. Gonjort the Third will necessarily be different from Gonjort the Fourth, and giving Gonjort the Third a proper burial/happy ending is important. I'll probably wait to see what happens toward the end of the 2008 story arcs to commit to any specific ending for my character, though. |
| NiTessine08-20-07, 05:00 PM | My wizard, Xaylen Ambedor, has already established himself as one of the foremost wizards and finest sea captains in the Principality. If I'm lucky, I can level him up to 14th before the campaign goes belly up and call him the mightiest wizard in all of Naerie. He will continue privateering Brotherhood and Pomarji vessels on the Azure. My asherati's next adventure is Shrouded Shores of Abanfyl. I fully expect him to die there. Dar, my scout/ranger will end up hanging around Shar Hesiyev as a sort of Gerry Adams of the ex-Scarlet Brotherhood soldiers. That is, after killing a buttload of drow in Expedition to the Demonweb Pits. Rethel Shiningshield, my dwarven fighter/abjurer will return to the Iron Hills and start training apprentices. Narnra Black Leaf of Greyhawk will complete Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk. I have no idea what she will do then. |
| Demoyn08-20-07, 05:12 PM | There are the Pirate isles in FR if my memory serves me correctly. And why not remake the old characters in the new living campaign ? The entire western coast (known as the sword coast and sea of swords) is chalk full of piratey action. In fact, Waterdeep gives out pirate-hunting licenses so that you could theoretically be a pirate-hunting pirate (and thus be a playable pirate in the non-evil living campaign). The northmen (Northern island of the Moonshae Isles) are predominantly seaborne barbarians. Typically with a CN bent. They're the typical raid/pillage/burn barbarians of yore (though since marrying into the Ffolk culture have subsided a bit). Also, the Moonsea and Sea of Fallen Swords have quite a bit if pirating going on, though those pirates wouldn't be quite as playable, seeing as how they have more of an evil bent. |
| CrystalBlue08-20-07, 05:14 PM | I know EXACTALLY what I'm going to do with all of my characters. Dimensional rift that somehow pulls them into a different time and place. I'm recreating all of them for the new system. Same build, same stats, same character. I might have to start at level one, but I'll be damned if they're going to tear up characters I haven't even given an ending to yet. Those are MY characters, not theirs. Remi will just have to pray to another diety while he's in the Forgotten Realms, desprately seeking for a connection to the Arch Paladin to send him back home so he may continue the fight against the hordes of Iuz. Rion won't care either way. He'll have to relearn all of his skills in battle, but at least he's out of that dreaded Iuzian territory. Yin bought a new house and everything! About to set up shop and try to open the best dancers guild in Highfolk. And then they rip her out of her beloved forest and plop her down in some forgotten....REALM! Damn, she's not a mad person...but she's gonna be ******. Crystal is apathetic to most of this, but he might just get a change of heart when he sees the people of FR. Maybe he'll be impressed enough to help them in a cause. Hrug is still searching for the taint that the gods locked away, wanting desperately to be rid of his 'curse' and to finally extinguish the darkness that is Tharizdun. But...when he finds the portal ripping out his dark template and slapping him in a new world, he'll be cold and alone... Lia was just about to have his eyes opened to the secrets of the Vesve...and then this disaster struck. He's lucky to be alive, but his master is no longer around...no longer able to teach him what he needs to learn. And so...he'll be on a quest to search for a way home as well. My kobold...sounded great...but it's not like there's anything I can do about it now. *sigh* And I WILL be using those characters, names, regions, and motives. You can try and rip my characters up, but I will find a way back to Greyhawk. Your pitiful Realms won't hold me! |

How they live the rest of their lives, what happens to them, etc. A sort of 'epilogue', if you will. Some will be happy endings, some will not. What is everyone else doing? That's a pretty good idea. I've been heading that way with the ones retiring soon (nearing 15) and those going into semi-retirement (at a good stopping point with end of campaign announcement). The ones going to have active play in the next year and a half though, I'm not saying. They'll change enough through play that I can't say what retirement will do. Some of my baby characters or proto-character-concepts will likley become FR characters. There is one in particular that was a lot of fun to play but probably won't get much airtime in the LG that is left. But that depends on what seeds the 4e mechanics and FR setting develops. They might get pushed out of the way by other concepts. |
| clannagh08-20-07, 07:28 PM | It was unlikely I would play much next year even before the announcement. Most of my characters will be unable to meet their long term goals. Basically i choose an access or favor early in their career that they work towards. - My Bright Sands character for example got Vorpal access at level 3 and so was turning "fortunes friend" so as to improve the chances of it working once he could afford one. He now neer will be able to afford one. - My main perrenland character got access to a dire eagle at level 6 that meant she took an XP/gold hit for 3 levels to rebuild towards being able to get it as an animal companian. She will qualify after a level or two and might get to play a game or two. - My other perrenland character has taken several levels of XP/Gold hits to eventualy take advantage of ruathan access and go spellsword gish. and so on :) My current thoughts are to play them above APL in a very derring-do fashion , have them all die a glorious death and not bring them back. Go out with a bang :) |
| bhale18708-20-07, 08:05 PM | My current thoughts are to play them above APL in a very derring-do fashion , have them all die a glorious death and not bring them back. Go out with a bang :) That's pretty much the end I lean towards also. |
| haferka08-20-07, 08:17 PM | My druid will finish Red hand of doom.. then retire as a blighter.. (prehaps I will try for a SM to send my child away to another world.. FAR FAR from IUZ).. My ferral halfing will either die in battle of live out his life in the forest in shapeshift form. My bright sands Marshal/bard (and my gnome scout) will probably both die playing up in future mods... I think that's more than enophe to keep my playing for the next 9 months. |
| Arassuil08-20-07, 08:45 PM | Well, honestly speaking, I'm actually pondering that the next time my lvl 10 Barbarian gets killed (not on purpose mind you), to pay for a reincarnate. And hope that it comes up with a cool race, like Gnoll. That way, I can tell people that for about 2 seconds, I had a Gnoll in LG ;) |
| Suvarov45408-20-07, 09:09 PM | I've only been playing for eight months, and my primary character made it to 5th level before running out of TUs this year. I was planning on a long and glorious career for him, building towards Battlesmith in a few more levels, and eventually retiring him to a forge in New Silverdeep where he (Moradin willing) would become Keoland's foremost supplier of magical weapons and armor. I may be able to get him up to 10th level (12th if the TU restriction really is lifted), which will just be enough to meet his goals. Unless he dies. Sadly, this means that I won't be able to play very much with my Knight, and he won't be able to redeem his family's honor (lost in the maelstrom of Countess Hannah's madness). Ah, well. |
| Puggle Halfwine08-20-07, 10:14 PM | Also, am I the only 21-year-old? I'm 22. |
| Mattastrophic08-21-07, 09:56 AM | My own Virtuoso13th has become so much fun to play, especially now that his skills are stratospheric, his spells are mighty (gotta start using Chained Alter Fortune), and he has Jarring Song (and the combos with it) as a trump card. I'll probably level him to 15th for the ending next year, then write up a really badass conclusion to the campaign from the bard's perspective. -Matt aka Solaufyn, grey elf Virtuoso |
| Lomiat08-21-07, 10:18 AM | I hope to get my wizard to 16th level and drop him into the high-level campaign for an adventure or two before it goes away. He's already walked through the Bleak Academy and White Plume Mountain, so there's not much else for him except, maybe, to lead/join a crack assault squad in a direct attack at a couple of the greater Bonehearts. My fighter was already nearly set to retire into Dyvers as a tax collector -- of sorts. I intend to stick with the plan, and since there will be no Dyvers Triad at some point next year, I expect my plan will come to fruition without their assistance (in other words, what I think of my character will be entirely up to me). It's the other characters that have me befuddled. I'd like to see my sorcerer at high levels, but he's only 3rd, leaving the mighty BOOM somewhat less boomilicious. My cleric's a nice guy, and at 6th level, has the potential to get into the double-digits, but I have no idea what would make a suitable ending for his career. My Trickster in Red Hand hopes to finally complete Red Hand (if we can get our play group together a couple more times), and then ... I'm not sure... maybe he'll commit a morally suspect act and get himself removed from the campaign. And those 1st-level PCs? My poor snow elf.... I had such great ambitions for him... I'll play him some, but... meh. |
| LachlarlanIII08-21-07, 10:31 AM | I already had an idea for my insane alienist. Basically, he will continue adventuring until he reaches his alien apotheosis. He will 'disappear' hundreds of years later. New adventurers will eventually find his laboratory, loot it much like they are wont :), and discover his journal. The journal is written in a smattering of languages and rambles a bit, but the adventurers catch bits about immense alien entities and how they are constantly watch him. The rantings eventually become a plea to the entities to come take him from his humdrum existence on Oerth. The final entry is written in absolute chilling clarity, "They now come for me, and I welcome them with open arms!" |
| Infinitive08-21-07, 11:27 AM | Well, i may or may not play LFR; I'll need to see 4th ed before I make a decision. I'm kinda torn, because I really hate the Star Wars Saga rules (despite how quick and easy they are), but the Book of Nine Swords is very solid material... if the game as a whole is balanced around that power level. If I do move to LFR, I am certain that there is at least one (probably more) character that would come with me for a reincarnation. However, one will most certainly not; her identity is too anchored in the Shield Lands for that to be a possibility. Therefore, here is her epilogue: Lady Naomi Artesia, Knight of Holy Shielding, was lost in the siege of Axeport (I'm sure we'll get there) at the end of the Great Crusade. She was slain in battle by General At-Ur Remhat, lieutenant of Iuz and general of his southern armies. Her death purchased time enough for three other Knights to retreat to high ground, where they rallied a squadron of routing soldiers. By the time Remhat came to the hill, fifty yeomen and three Knights of Holy Shielding had dug in, and were able to hold back Remhat's press. A small memorial was erected by her parents in the Field of Heroes outside Critwall. |
| Mattastrophic08-21-07, 11:57 AM | I'm reminded of the ending writeups from Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal. They might've only been a couple of paragraphs for each character, but they were SO COOL. I have a feeling my Virtuoso will go out like Keldorn. He'll be 27th level or so, and do something really awesome, then his goddess Hanali will reach down and promote him. -Matt, complete with the Outsider Hit Dice benefits package... |
| Vamroc08-21-07, 01:15 PM | From what I read we've got about fifteen months before the world goes KABOOOM. That's plenty of time to play all the mods people will be writing that pay tribute to LG. There will be almost no convention exclusives either. You will be able to play nearly any mod that premieres at a con for your home group. So don't worry about having nothing to play and not going in to retirement. When my high level charactor plays his last mod I'm gonna TPK the whole freakin party. What are they gonna do remove my charator from play. ( just joking) |
