| LGMoses01-16-07, 01:08 PM | Has anyone seen/heard/met Mordenkainen in a mod? Any Co8 members? Does it list combat stats? I imagine it just says, "if the pc's fite so & so they're dead". Lets find Mordenkainen. Ask him y he shaved his head and grew that silly goatee. |

| kenobi6501-16-07, 01:21 PM | Aren't they all dead? That said, I think one of my PC's met Ottiluke at some point on a trip to the underworld, or another plane, or whatever... I don't think so. Rary killed two of them (Otiluke and Tenser, IIRC, but I may be wrong, I don't have my LGG in front of me) shortly before running off to the Bright Lands, but I believe that both of them were brought back. At least, as of the writing of the LGG, the Co8 was alive (if somewhat changed in composition). |
| kenobi6501-16-07, 01:22 PM | Ask him y he shaved his head Male pattern baldness. and grew that silly goatee. Nothing says "Machiavellian schemer" like a goatee. Nothing. :D |

Lets find Mordenkainen. Ask him y he shaved his head and grew that silly goatee. I think writing stats of major NPC is pretty pointless in the end. Only a really distruptive players would actually want to fight them plus if you stat a Wiz20, not to mention any possible followers, etc. This pumps up the module page count. I mean, some guy wants to talk to you, is not evil and then you want to kill him just for that? Sampo Haarlaa Naerie Triad |
| LGMoses01-16-07, 01:49 PM | duh, i'm just messing around and wondering if it had been done. The most I've seen stated for LG was that Tenser's fortress article on the RPGA home page a while back where it stated him like... wiz 20-22 or something. Yeah, it would be pointless and is best left not done. I'm just wondering if they're ever featured in mods? Maybe they're in special events. OOO since Mordenkainen was Gygax's character think he might want to come to an intertactive and roleplay him. I know Gygax was in the first Dnd movie *shudder* dressed as a wizard. That mite be cool. Highly doubt it though. I'm a teensy bit hyper today, i'm running a mod and can't wait cuz I'm excited! :D Woo hoo, dnd day, dnd day. All hail Dnd Tuesday! |
| LGMoses01-16-07, 01:53 PM | Nothing says "Machiavellian schemer" like a goatee. Nothing. :D Agreed. He looked much cooler in my display pic though. Hmmm, we need a reality show, "A Day in the Life of an Epic Level Wizard" starring Mordenkainen. What do you think he eats for breakfast/dinner/supper? Does he still have to eat even? I wonder if he's made any more "Mordenkainen's _________" spells. Most of them are really cool. |
| CrystalBlue01-16-07, 02:01 PM | Well, there is this one year 6 Highfolk mod... *giggles* I'm pretty sure I didn't meet him, per-say... |
| NiTessine01-16-07, 02:07 PM | None have appeared in modules that I've seen. The closest I've encountered was someone pretending to be Warnes Starcoat. I asked him how Theodain Eriason was, he went "who?" and then we kicked his butt. |
| Japangirl01-16-07, 02:08 PM | I really probably shouldn't mention this, but . . . we scheme a lot on how to permanently kill high level casters. All the time. See, there's these really evil people who run the BK and we'd like to get rid of them. On a completely unrelated note, thinaun weapons work in antimagic fields. |
| Randall Montgomery01-16-07, 02:15 PM | I don't think so. You're correct, Otilluke and Tenser were killed by Rary, after he had destroyed all of their clones. A lost clone of Tenser was eventually found/rescued by adventurers, but AFAIK, Otilluke is permenantly pushing up daisies. Personally, my wizard would love to meet any of them, if only to get some sage advice and maybe do some networking to position himself for a spot on the circle (not bad for an almost-20 year old)! :D It'll probably be a few more years of game time before I get anywhere near that high, but at least I'll have the dream.... |
| LGMoses01-16-07, 02:19 PM | if Mordenkainen and Chuck Norris got into a fight who would win? |
| CrystalBlue01-16-07, 02:24 PM | if Mordenkainen and Chuck Norris got into a fight who would win? The cyber-ninja with Dread Pirate levels would sneak attack them at the same time and still have enough actions for a Quickened Improved Invisability. :D |
| LGMoses01-16-07, 02:26 PM | But Mordenkainen has clones and Chuck Norris can't be killed because he's trained with Bowflex. Ur dread pirate is toast by round 3. |
| SgtHulka01-16-07, 02:41 PM | Bowflex: This apparatus of high-tension wires and resilient bows was brought from the Barrier Peaks and displayed in Greyhawk as a curiosity. Only later was its miraculous puprose discovered through the use of powerful divination magics. For each TU spent training on the machine, a character gains a permanent unnamed bonus of +1 each to her Strength, Constitution and Charisma score, while receiving a concurrent -1 penalty to her Intelligence and Wisdom. Strong evocation; CL 20th; Craft Wonderous Item, miracle or wish, Price Your Acting Career, Weight irrelevant. |

Interesting that it is an "unnamed bonus", ie a bonus of type "unnamed", rather than a bonus that simply has no type associated with it. Luckily, Chuck Norris has infinite Int and Wis to spare. |
| Nutation01-16-07, 02:56 PM | Jallarzi Salavarian appeared in a Y4 NMR. |
| LGMoses01-16-07, 02:58 PM | Luckily, Chuck Norris has infinite Int and Wis to spare. ok, its cool. I was wondering cuz u know Chuck has a lot skills with all of the tumbling/jumping/etc he does. |
| kenobi6501-16-07, 03:31 PM | We ran into Robilar in a certain still-active module (as I'm sure many of you have). The DM had fun with him, making break-the-fourth-wall comments like, "well, you do realize that I'm Epic-level, and could kill you all if I really wanted to?" Have also run into Tenser's familiar. Pain in the tuchus, that guy was. :D |
| Arvagor01-16-07, 04:15 PM | IIRC (and I may not), Nystul makes an appearance in COR4-10 "Riddle of the Dust", though it may have just been a behind the scenes thing. He is believed to be a senior member of a shadowy conclave of Tenha sages and magi known as the Keepers of the Flan, whose professed goal appears to be the preservation of the Tenha people and their traditions. |
| Morgen01-16-07, 04:30 PM | Haven't seen Mordenkainen yet. I have however run accross Bigby, but that was just a wierd kind of us in the past thing... |
| _m_01-16-07, 07:08 PM | tenser is LN human mage 22, and hes alive, in the nyr div ottiluke is dead at the hands of rary, but raisable afaik, i believe hes a 22 as well rary is obviously alive. bigby makes no current appearence atm i've met mordenkainen. he's around. nystul is active, but hasn't been seen. i could be wrong (it happens occasionaly) but im pretty sure thats fair accurate. |

| UMiskatonic01-16-07, 09:45 PM | Look in the epic level handbook |
| TimRat01-16-07, 10:28 PM | to even have a Co8 (or 6) is basically a no-no and has to go through a lot of hoops. having said that a few have appeared or been named in core mods. however i have written bigby into one of my older mods where his name wasn't specifically mentioned but its assumed (rightly) that it was him. also there was a battle interactive in veluna where he appeared (again assumed) but that drew the ire of some other people and thus was one of the reasons we couldn't use them again. though a lot of people enjoyed it. |
| Sutro01-16-07, 10:48 PM | One of my characters has met Vecna. He took three swings at him, all misses, before he chickened out. |
| Drezden01-16-07, 10:57 PM | My main character has met Warnes Starcoat, Ottiluke (in the underworld) and met Drawmij at his undersea hideout. Drawmij gave him a couple of nice favors from two different mods. Daren |
| _m_01-16-07, 10:58 PM | One of my characters has met Vecna. He took three swings at him, all misses, before he chickened out. lol. WHY did you swing at vecna, and how is it you arent dead? |
| LGMoses01-16-07, 11:32 PM | lol. WHY did you swing at vecna, and how is it you arent dead? Vecna must have thought he had a fly on his shoulder or something. |
| Simpi01-17-07, 12:17 AM | Vecna must have thought he had a fly on his shoulder or something. I wonder what was the official outcome of that module. I ran it twice, on both times the PCs caused Vecna to reborn. Sampo Haarlaa Naerie Triad |

| Randall Montgomery01-17-07, 11:46 AM | I wonder what was the official outcome of that module. I ran it twice, on both times the PCs caused Vecna to reborn. Sampo Haarlaa Naerie Triad I'm very curious as well. Our group also caused Vecna to be reborn. In an incredible display of bad luck, our "I-can-make-any-save" Monk, with a Will save of +16 or something, managed to fail the save against the sword. We were so annoyed, as we'd taken out all the other opponents except the Voice (IIRC), and were almost home free (although we didn't realize it at the time). I'm willing to bet most groups playing the mod brought him back, unfortunantly. :( |

We had an unseen servant go for the sword, so I'm not entirely sure what happened, that being said, the sword did just disappear I do believe, and not having read the mod, I don't really know what happened. |

| bitznarf01-17-07, 01:32 PM | If you'd released an evil demigod upon the world... believe me, you'd know. Well, I was only a lowly lvl 3 rouge playing at APL 12, so I didn't have any spellcraft or magic knowledge to know what did happen, but there was no noticeable demi god floating around afterwards. |

Precisely. Vecna's return was not exactly subtle (and required, as I recall, that you kill the Voice of Vecna with the sword). |
| Japangirl01-17-07, 06:52 PM | Our table prevented Vecna from being reborn. We killed him without the evil sword, just deaded him instead. |
| _m_01-17-07, 09:09 PM | Our table prevented Vecna from being reborn. We killed him without the evil sword, just deaded him instead. awww. i wish i'd got to play that 1. god killing sounds like so much fun. |
| Japangirl01-17-07, 09:17 PM | We didn't exactly kill Vecna. We killed the Voice of Vecna and prevented Vecna from being reborn into this world. I don't think we could have actually killed Vecna himself at the level we played at. |
| _m_01-17-07, 09:20 PM | I don't think we could have actually killed Vecna himself at the level we played at. awww. ur just selling urself short. id bet on you against vecna ANY day, japangirl. |
| LGMoses01-17-07, 10:02 PM | ooo, how did the dm play Vecna. What is Vecna like? |
| Samwise01-18-07, 11:52 AM | Vecna is rather laid back in person. He studies the daily intelligence reports, peruses ancient tomes, and collects and dispenses secrets. When he has free time, his hobbies include plotting his ultimate apotheosis, and creating unresolved plot hooks for role-playing games. |
| kenobi6501-18-07, 11:54 AM | Vecna is rather laid back in person. He studies the daily intelligence reports, peruses ancient tomes, and collects and dispenses secrets. And, at least once a day, he reaches for something with his missing hand, and says, "Dammit!" |
| _m_01-18-07, 07:01 PM | you know, it's just occoured to me maybe we should be 'searching' for mord, not 'hunting'. its probably going to end badly if we find the near-demigod power npc and say 'finaly, we've been hunting you for ages'... mordenkainens painfull destruction anyone? |
| Japangirl01-18-07, 07:56 PM | mordenkainens painfull destruction anyone? He doesn't need a new spell. He can just Disjunction us and watch all the LG people cry as all their shiny, expensive toys go POOF! |
| _m_01-18-07, 08:00 PM | He doesn't need a new spell. He can just Disjunction us and watch all the LG people cry as all their shiny, expensive toys go POOF! thats the one i MEANT, honest :D just couldnt remember what it was called. my second guess was: mordenkainenes mysterious and ultimately powerfull way to get lgh characters to retire because all the stuff they have collected over 200 AR's has been suddenly destroyed, all because of a missunderstood greeting... but i liked the first 1 better. |
| Lomiat01-18-07, 08:27 PM | Our table prevented Vecna from being reborn. We killed him without the evil sword, just deaded him instead. The sword tried to possess my occult slayer (I think), but he couldn't have been certain. He just didn't want the druid lady to run off with it. She wanted to hide it. He said, "No." She could point out where to hide it, and he'd do the hiding. Meanwhile, nothing in that mod served to convince my occult slayer that he was wrong that magical powers are evil and corrupting and too powerful for people to use without clear, precise contractual terms. |
| Randall Montgomery01-26-07, 11:30 AM | Our table prevented Vecna from being reborn. We killed him without the evil sword, just deaded him instead. This was our table's problem. We had eliminated everyone except the Voice, but when our monk got within 10' of the sword, he failed his critical will save and was dominated by it. This forced him to pick up the sword and kill the Voice with it, returning Vecna to life. So while the result sucked, it was interesting to see our monk pick up a sword and attack a guy like a "real" fighter. :D |
| gbuchold01-26-07, 06:22 PM | Oh, I'm sure Mordenkainen wouldn't take "hunting" to mean hunting hunting. After all, if he was confused, he could always toss out a Mordenkainen's Disambiguation! *ducks* |
| Jay_Ibero_91101-26-07, 10:55 PM | I played Immortal Longings with an arcane heavy table, one shock trooper type, and myself as a druid 10. We one initiative in the final encounter, so the tightly clustered bad guys got to enjoy Glitterdust, Black Tentacles, and a Wall of Thorns before their turns even came up. Then we buffed the barbarian, who got polymorphed into a cave troll for pounce (caster had access to the non-MM form), as well as a FoM to actually move through the crap. He did a heedless charge with pounce against the Voice, failed his initial save vs. the dominate, but made in with a re-roll from the party fatespinner. Then the Voice became pudding. And the rest of the baddies shortly thereafter... |
| Maesto01-29-07, 11:12 PM | My Immortal Longings table was doomed from the start... most of the table had a grudge against Pacanan, and so as soon as initiative hit, our barbarian walked straight up to him, was dominated by the sword, picked it up, and toasted the Voice... On the Co6/8 note, Wikipedia has a good entry for the canon stuff, at least. Nystul was running around in the Dust series, and Bigby has featured behind the scenes in the Greater Good series. Tenser has played an offscreen role in the bright sands series, and Mordy? Well, his name is on the role for the Perrenland wizard's guild... Jolyon |

Hmmm....that reads like a text for Vecna's personal ad WTD Femle uber-lich for long long lasting relationship. :D Mike |
| _m_01-30-07, 04:52 PM | and Mordy? Well, his name is on the role for the Perrenland wizard's guild... Jolyon pfft. wizards guild. ha. have you ever got to meat him tho? being, im fairly sure, the highest lvl archmarge around, if u aint had the chance, i cant think who else wuda. |
| Maesto01-31-07, 07:02 AM | highest in perrenland, at least. Alas, I've never been invited to an audience... |
| copper_wyrmling01-31-07, 10:58 AM | My Immortal Longings table did just fine, mostly due to being bizarrely lucky - we were caster-heavy and did well on initiative, so we had an Evard's plus a Silence down before the bad guys got actions, and our archer was readying to disrupt spellcasting. One of the bad guys had Freedom of Movement, so walked out of the Silence and tried to cast, but the archer's readied attack fizzled her spell. When the druid started acting funny, one of the PCs thought she was under a mind-control effect and targeted a Dispel Magic on her - which accidentally killed her Freedom of Movement, meaning that she got grappled by the giant constrictor snake that was following one of the PCs around. We never even found out about the effect on the sword... the only person in the party proficient with martial weapons was an archer, so nobody was particularly interested in trying to grab it, and we all fought better from range anyway. My Perrenland sorcerer has been threatening bad guys with a meeting with Mordenkainen for a while now (since he is theoretically a member of her guild), but she's never actually met him, rumors about her relationship with him notwithstanding (some people apparently have trouble distinguishing the names "Mordenkainen" and "Morginstaler"). |
