| ithardin02-20-07, 11:40 AM | Whilst perusing "Races of the Wild," pg. 21 under the 'Rites' section of Correllon Larethian it states that "Before a battle, believers often recite the Litany of Arrows." Does anyone know if there is actual text of what this litany is? I ask because I would like to include this into my Elven Fighter/Ranger/Soon to be Champion of Correllon Larethian's Role-playing. Thanks in advance, Ian |
| kenobi6502-20-07, 11:56 AM | "Our arrows Which art in quivers Hallowed be thy tips...." ;) |
| ithardin02-20-07, 12:59 PM | *rimshot* Thank you Mike...he'll be here all week folks, tips your waitresses and try the veal! |
| Bold02-20-07, 01:00 PM | "Before a battle, believers often recite the Litany of Arrows." Does anyone know if there is actual text of what this litany is? Sure, my wood elf archer says it all the time: I must not miss. Missing is the party-killer. Missing is the painful death that brings endless Raise Deads. I will face my missed shots. I will gain a +4 bonus from Woodland Archer’s adjust-for-range. And when it is a crit-threat I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where my arrow has gone there will be a Greyhawk’d body. Only I will remain. Or maybe you'd prefer this one: It is by DEX alone I set my bow in motion. It is by Rapid Shot that arrows acquire speed, the ARs acquire XP, the XP becomes a leveling. It is by DEX alone I set my bow in motion. |
| KarmaInferno02-20-07, 01:02 PM | I do not aim with my hand. He who aims with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I aim with my Eye. I do not shoot with my hand. He who shoots with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I shoot with my Mind. I do not kill with my hand. He who kills with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I kill with my Heart. =D -karma |
| bhale18702-20-07, 06:02 PM | THESE ARE MY ARROWS. There are many like them, but these are mine. My arrows are my best friend. They are my life. I must master them as I master my life. My arrows, without me are useless. Without my arrows, I am useless. I must fire my arrow true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will.... My arrows and myself know that what counts in this war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit... My arrows are elven, even as I, because it is my life. Thus I will learn them as my brothers. I will ever guard them against the ravages of weather and damage. I will keep my arrows clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will... Before Correllon Larethian I swear this creed. My arrows and myself are the defenders of my forrest. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but Peace! |
| solbergb02-22-07, 01:46 PM | Bah. This is one reason my archer follows Ehlenestra. None of this battle mumbo-jumbo. Drawing the bow is the somatic component that infuses the arrow with magic. If the enemy has cover or concealment I whistle it to the correct location. I do lots of damage because I have a strong pull bow and have favored enemy "everybody" (weapon spec) No whining to Corellon to make my arrows hit. Grandpa taught me that it is just practice, practice, practice. Preferably on moving targets that want to bash your head in. That concentrates the mind remarkably. Perhaps we're a bit more practical in the Phostwood, where baby archers practice on ogres while dodging the random oozes and strange creatures. |
| ithardin02-22-07, 02:24 PM | Although when you pray to her you have to first mention two positive things about the forest... I guess we all can't worship an INTERMEDIATE goddess that is shared with the humans :P *tongue in cheek* Ian |
| solbergb02-22-07, 04:07 PM | I pray by observing the circle of life. I hunt for what I will eat. I use the resources of the forest but don't destroy it. I help those who are lost to find their homes. We don't waste time with formal rituals. (whose character Orofin thinks Corellon is something pansy Celedon and whipped Bramblewood elves need to make up for their feelings of inadequacy. I mean, he's all right, he's a rightous Elf, killed lots of orcs and blinded Gruumsh and all, but elves should be more self-sufficient and not be so dependent on Him) |
| ZX67002-22-07, 04:23 PM | I pray by observing the circle of life. I hunt for what I will eat. I use the resources of the forest but don't destroy it. I help those who are lost to find their homes. Sounds quite similar to a worshiper of Solonor Thelandira, the deity you archers *should* be worshiping. :P |
| Timlagor02-22-07, 05:14 PM | Well I see where you've all been going wrong: it's all this babling about gods. They don't care about you and you shouldnt' care about them: your bow is all what you should be worshipping! |

They don't care about you and you shouldnt' care about them: your bow is all what you should be worshipping! Orofin: "Uh...son, I know you feel the need to "compensate" but sometimes a bow is just a bow." (Orofin also thinks people who sink 3/4 of their wealth into a single fragile weapon are silly....and who owns several bows, all of which have different purposes) |
| ithardin02-22-07, 05:35 PM | FYI, my Elven Ranger/Archer (who I just built this week) does worship Solonor. The original question was if anyone had ever seen actual libretto to "The Litany of Arrows," or whether one of the authors of "Races of the Wild" did some creative license to make it up. RP-wise, I think little flavor things (like the pre-battle prayers/rituals that some of my religious PCs do) add to the total game experience :D I also think that any PC who RPs his/her personality really adds to the game. I think it would be fun to get the archers together and listen to them opine as they drew and dropped the baddies with their respective weapons. |
| kenobi6502-22-07, 05:42 PM | your bow is all what you should be worshipping! When your "god" has Hardness 5 and 5 hit points (maybe 7 and 15, if it's a +1 bow), you're better off worshipping a hand puppet (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0080.html). |
| solbergb02-22-07, 05:52 PM | . I think it would be fun to get the archers together and listen to them opine as they drew and dropped the baddies with their respective weapons. I've had some opportunity to do that. "Son, stop wiggling around! You can't shoot properly if you keep moving." (to a hyperactive adolescent elf scout with skirmish.) "Why yes I'd like to borrow an undead bane bow, just in case. What? Why the sam-hill did you make it GLOW. How am I supposed to scout when I'm lit up like a Phost tree? Thanks but no thanks. (to a Pholtan fiend/undead hunting archer)" That same Pholtan archer was always better at hitting things than me, so when he full attacked and missed, I'd always switch to splash weapons rather than try myself. He was a good bellweather on how hard the enemy would be to hit. (me and a cleric/archer get hit by rays of enfeeblement) Orofin: "I quickdraw my lower strength "fatigue" bow and keep shooting" cleric/archer: "I cast bull strength" (these days we both carry potions of lesser restoration. Lucky for us those were WEAK rays of enfeeblement) "Can you do that primal scream from a little further away? Sheesh!" (to wildrunner/archer, who didn't hit any better than I did because I was whistling my arrows to ignore cover)....and later on....after spiders get both of us with webs while sleeping/trancing and start pulling us up trees. Orofin: "I don't resist" (then, as he's dangling upside down...and no longer prone) "I quickdraw my bow and full attack the spider holding somebody else" (I didn't want to kill my spider....I'd go plunging to the ground and lose good shooting time . I had several full attacks in me before it got me all the way up, plenty of time :)) The wildrunner did his scream, resisted the tugging and spent most of the fight in a tug of war match instead of shooting. Afterwards he was kind of sheepish, and remembered Orofin's calm. But then there are other days like this one. "We must kill them all so word never spreads of our shame" (after the entire party gets the suprise and initiative on a couple random guards and fails to drop either of them) |
| ithardin02-23-07, 12:29 PM | ...those are just great stories, thanks for bringing a little extra sunshine to my day. |
