Hey guys,

So, the Sinister Spire is out (yay!). Quick question...

I don't know *exactly* how much xp it grants or if full xp is likely (it wasn't for Barrow), but there's a pretty good chance I'll level between ARs. Due to the delays with this mod, if I level, I'll be taking half (level 9 playing APL 6). Now, according to my GM the adaption document says you "may" level between slots; you certainly don't have to. Is this correct? Can I stay level 8 for the purposes of the second AR (since I STARTED at level 8) and thus gain full? Or am I taking half? I'm still not 100% sure I'm leveling yet...

Cheers,

Dave.

I'd say you're taking half.

"may" because it only happens if you get enough xp.

What Tim said makes sense. You can't *not* level on an AR if you have the XP.

The real question would be if you can level during a slot. That would greatly simplify my life if you could.

I agree with Tim, too. A Living Greyhawk character must take a new level immediately if the amount of points in its Total XP box on an adventure record meets or exceeds the amount required to advance.

As he noted, the term "may advance/level" suggests that a character may get enough XP to move forward after a round or may not get enough. It all depends on how many XP's one begins the adventure with.

I hope judges are allowing characters to advance mid-adventure for Barrow of the Forgotten King and Sinister Spire as was allowed for Red Hand of Doom. I think it's acceptable for all Adapteds given their length. I think our judge for Expedition to the Demonweb Pits is gonna allow it - but that conversion document might have specific language like Red Hand of Doom's did.

Could just let yourself get killed early in the adventure and then re-level...end up with more gold that way, hehe.

Demonweb Pits doesn't have the mid-AR levelling language. I asked Tim about it as part of putting together the Demonweb Pits DM's FAQ and he confirmed that mid-AR levelling was not available in Demonweb Pits.

I understand from another conversation that Barrow has some language in the retail document that suggests a good point for leveling. The split ARs in Barrow and Sinister serves that purpose for LG.

RHoD has specific language about mid AR levelling; I would need to see that language in the ADP document before I would step outside the LGCS on this issue.

Damnit.

Well, apparently I've lost an AR anyway, so... it might not be an issue. And it'll only be an issue apparently if we get "absolute max" xp, and based on our Barrow performance we're probably not gunna do that...

Two things:
- You 100% level if you get the first AR.
- The reason I added that remark was indeed for mid-AR leveling. The reason I added it is because the adventure assumes you start at level 5 and end at level 7. If you start in the low 5s though, chances are you are not yet level 6 by the time you get the first AR, let alone level 7 in which case the final fights might be really difficult. This is especially true if you play with 4 or 5 PCs. Leveling mid-AR in the 2nd part hence is intended as a bit of a life saver (or at the very least make it more fun). If the players are already having an easy time though, the DM is better of sticking to standard LG rules.

Pieter, I haven't read either Barrow or Spire (either the retail product or ADP document), so forgive my not having the context. Are you refering to Spire? Are you saying that you added a passage in the Spire ADP to permit mid-AR leveling?

Pieter, does the same thing apply to Barrow? You could start in the low 3s and end up only 3rd level for the final fights.

It only applies to the Spire. I cannot speak for the Burrow. It is an exception that I as the person adapting the Spire thought might be required. I checked Barrow since it is the prequel to Spire, but I did not check xp/gp/ELs thoroughly and I assume the adapter checked whether it would be needed or not.

No barrow does not apply to this b/c barrow is designed for 2nd level PCs to start with. If your 2nd level you will automatically get to 3rd after the first AR. a whole party consisting of 3rd level PCs should be fine throughout as i haven't heard of any complaints. its tough but not anything worse then in a normal LG adventure.

Hey All--

I'm trying to muster for Sinister Spire...have any of y'all played it yet and how long did it take you?

I'm not sure if we'll need 1, 2, 3 or more play sessions.

Any help? How many hours total?

Thanks.

Took about 11 hours with a super-prepped DM(drew out great maps and had pre-taped paper on them to eliminate the need to draw anything) and strong party.

Takes a good day of gaming at least. (i.e: start early end late)

Possible to be done in one day with a committed DM and party.

Otherwise two days is a safe bet, depending on roleplay/getting sidetracked.

I have run it, and I can say the GM needs to be prepped.

Under 10 hours for my party. But we had to rush because the FLGS was closing. We were also demolishing encounters as we went through the mod. Heck, one encounter ended in one round of buffing by the enemies and three or four actions from the party. We didn't even get to the end of the first round in that encounter.
